A sports livestream can be blocked because the event’s broadcast rights do not include your location, a league blackout protects another broadcaster’s exclusive rights, or the service has mistaken your location. First check the event’s official availability for your country. If it should be available, troubleshoot the location and network settings the service uses to identify you. A VPN or proxy may trigger an error or be unsupported; it is not a reliable fix for a rights restriction.
What “blocked in your country” can mean
The message does not always identify the underlying problem. A service may show wording such as “not available in your current location,” “geographical restriction,” “geoblock message,” or “content is subject to blackout.” Those phrases can describe different situations, so start by treating the message as a clue rather than a diagnosis.
Territorial rights restrict a stream by country
Leagues and event organizers sell or grant broadcast rights for particular territories. A streaming service may be authorized to show an event in one country but not another, even if the event is included with your subscription at home. ABC, for example, says much of its content is limited to Australia because of rights restrictions and contractual arrangements; it also notes that some live sports coverage is unavailable outside Australia for contractual reasons. The restriction is about where a service may show the content, not necessarily a fault with your account or device.

A blackout is narrower than a general country restriction. A game may be unavailable on a league’s streaming service in a local market because a regional or national rights holder has the exclusive right to show it there. The game may still be available through that authorized broadcaster, or later as a replay, depending on the league’s rules. A paid subscription to a league service does not necessarily remove those live blackouts.

A location check can be wrong
Some services estimate location from your internet connection’s IP address. ESPN says it uses IP address to determine a viewer’s location. The address can be associated with the wrong place, or the service may see a network route that does not reflect where you are. ABC lists VPN routing, proxies, firewalls, network configuration, security software, and occasional ISP geolocation errors among possible causes of location messages. A location error may therefore occur even when the event is legitimately available where you are.
Check availability before changing settings
Confirm the event, not just the subscription. Availability can differ by sport, competition, game, country, and broadcaster. A service’s general statement that it operates in your country does not establish that it has rights to every event there.
- Write down the details. Note the service, event or matchup, the country where you are watching, and the exact error wording. If you are traveling, distinguish your current country from the country where you normally use the service.
- Check the service’s official event or location lookup. HBO Max directs users to check event eligibility by location. Use the lookup or event page for the service you are actually trying to watch; availability on another service is not proof that this one has the rights.
- Check the league’s current availability and blackout guidance. Look for the exact event and market. A country-level availability page may not spell out every local blackout, while a blackout guide may distinguish local games from nationally televised games.
- Look for an authorized local broadcaster. If the event is restricted on the streaming service, use the league’s official listings or the rights holder’s schedule to find a permitted way to watch. Do not assume that a subscription works in every country or overrides a local blackout.
If the official information says the event is unavailable in your location, network troubleshooting will not change the rights. If it says the event should be available, proceed to the location and network checks below.

Fix a location error when the event should be available
Make one change at a time and retry the stream. That makes it easier to identify whether the issue is a device permission, a network route, or the service itself. Follow the service’s own instructions where they differ from these general checks.
1. Turn off tools that change or relay your location
Temporarily disable a VPN, proxy, private relay, or similar routing feature, then reopen the service and try again. These tools can make your connection appear to come from a different country or an address the service cannot verify. NBA support says VPNs and proxies are unsupported for League Pass and may prevent content from loading properly; its error 7027 guidance was updated September 13, 2026. Do not use location-masking tools to try to defeat an event’s rights restriction.
2. Check the app’s location permission
If the app requests access to your device’s location, allow it while troubleshooting. HBO Max notes that location access may be needed for event eligibility checks. The precise permission label and settings path vary by device and operating-system version, so use the device’s app-permission settings and the service’s current help instructions rather than relying on a universal menu path.

3. Try a normal personal network
If you are on a workplace, school, hotel, public, or otherwise managed Wi-Fi connection, try a trusted personal network instead. Firewalls, security software, and network routing can interfere with a location check. If the event works on one connection but not another, the difference points toward the network path rather than the event rights.

An ISP can also associate an IP address with an inaccurate location. If the service continues to identify your country incorrectly on a personal network, contact the service and your internet provider; do not try to correct the mismatch by masking your location.
4. Refresh the service and connection
Close and reopen the app or browser, then try the event again. If the provider recommends it, restart your network equipment and retest. Avoid changing firewall, router, or security settings without guidance from the service or network administrator: those settings may be there for a reason, and a rights restriction will remain in place regardless.

5. Contact support with useful details
If the service still places you in the wrong location, give its support team the event, your actual country, internet provider, device, network type, and exact error message. State whether you have disabled location-masking tools and whether the problem occurs on another ordinary personal network. Those details help distinguish an account or app problem from IP geolocation or a genuine market restriction.

NBA League Pass illustrates why availability needs to be checked at both the country and game level. The NBA support page updated October 12, 2026 says League Pass is available in most countries and regions, while listing certain unavailable locations. It also says local blackouts may apply in the United States and Canada, and that subscribers can use League Pass in any supported country while traveling. These are NBA-specific terms, not a rule for other leagues or services.

The NBA’s separate blackout guide, updated October 6, 2026, explains that local and national blackouts protect exclusive rights held by content providers. It says every NBA game is available live with League Pass in countries other than the United States and Canada. In the United States, its examples direct viewers of local team games to a regional cable provider’s in-market local access subscription, and identify ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock, or Amazon Prime Video as options for nationally broadcast games. The guide also describes replay timing for those categories. Those options and timing apply to the NBA guidance cited here; check its current, event-specific guide before relying on them because rights arrangements can change.

The practical lesson is to separate three questions: whether the service operates where you are, whether it carries this event in your market, and whether a live blackout applies to this particular game. A “yes” to the first question does not guarantee a “yes” to the other two.
Choose the next step based on the result
- The event is not offered in your country: Check official local listings or the league’s authorized broadcaster information. Device or network changes cannot grant the service rights it does not have.
- The event is blacked out live: Check the league’s guidance for an authorized live broadcaster, replay, or other permitted coverage. Do not assume the blackout applies identically to every game or market.
- The event is listed as available, but the service reports the wrong country: Disable routing tools, check any requested location permission, and retry on an ordinary personal network. Escalate with the service if the location mismatch persists.
- The rules or listings are unclear: Ask the service which country and event eligibility rule its error refers to. Give the exact event and location; broad questions about whether a subscription “works abroad” may not resolve a market-specific rights issue.
Because broadcast rights and app requirements vary by event and can change, the relevant authority is the current official event listing or support page for the sport, service, and country involved. There is no universal broadcaster or setting that resolves every country-block message.
