A smart plug can restore electricity without restoring the appliance’s operation. The usual reason is the plug’s power-loss recovery setting: it may remember that the outlet was off and deliberately leave it off when power returns. Other plugs force the outlet on, force it off, or let you choose among those modes. Even when the plug is on, the appliance may require its own standby or memory function before it resumes. Treat the plug state and the appliance state as two separate troubleshooting questions.

What a power cycle actually changes

A power cycle is an interruption followed by restored mains power. During the interruption, both the smart plug and the connected appliance lose power. When electricity returns, the plug must decide what state its outlet should have, while the appliance must decide what to do with the power it receives.

Those decisions are model-specific. A plug may restore its last known on/off state, start in a default mode, or expose a setting that forces the outlet on or off. An appliance may resume its previous cycle, remain in standby, or stay off until its physical or electronic power control is pressed. There is no universal rule that a powered smart outlet makes every appliance restart.

The most common cause: the plug restored an off state

Look in the plug’s app, hub, or manual for labels such as power loss recovery, restore on power loss, default state, status after power failure, or power-off memory. The setting may be under advanced settings rather than the main on/off screen.

In a previous state or last state mode, the plug attempts to return to the state it had before the outage. If it was off before power disappeared, remaining off after restoration is expected behavior. Roku’s support guidance states that a device configured to maintain its last power state remains off when it was off before the outage. Zooz describes the same concept as a recovery-state parameter and offers three choices: previous state, forced off, and forced on; its documented default is previous state.

Some products do not offer a choice. Roku notes that devices without support for power-loss recovery do not show the setting. D-Link documents return to the last known state for its smart plug, while Xiaomi’s Mi Smart Plug (WiFi) FAQ says that model does not remember its prior state by default after a power failure. These examples show why instructions for one model cannot be assumed to apply to another model from the same manufacturer.

Documented examples of recovery behavior

Product or catalog entry Documented behavior
Zooz ZEN04 Smart Plug Selectable previous state, forced off, or forced on; previous state is the default.
Roku smart-home devices Some devices provide a Power loss recovery setting. In last-state mode, a device that was off remains off. Unsupported devices do not expose the setting.
D-Link smart plug Returns to its last known state, according to the manufacturer’s support FAQ.
Xiaomi Mi Smart Plug (WiFi) Does not remember its previous state by default after a power failure, according to the model FAQ.
Z-Wave Alliance 700 Series Smart Plug catalog entry Lists prior state, forced off, and forced on as recovery choices, with prior state as the default.
Aqara Smart Plug Its FAQ describes an app option for power-off memory.

The exact model, firmware, region, and hub can affect which options appear. A setting documented for one product is evidence about that product only, not a standard shared by all smart plugs.

Why an appliance can stay off even when the plug is on

A smart plug controls the supply of electricity; it does not press the appliance’s power button or recreate every internal operating state. Many devices have a physical latching switch or an electronic standby circuit. After complete power loss, such a device may require a manual press, a remote command, or a manufacturer-specific “resume after power failure” option.

Tuya’s support explanation says automatic return to a prior state depends on a device’s memory function and is determined by the manufacturer. Devices without that function cannot automatically restore their state after a complete power failure. The available documentation does not establish one behavior for every appliance category or model, so check the appliance maker’s instructions for terms such as auto restart, resume after power failure, AC recovery, or last state.

This distinction explains a common observation: the plug’s indicator is lit and the app reports “on,” yet a lamp, fan, coffee machine, computer, or other load is not operating. The outlet may be energized correctly while the appliance is waiting in standby or has intentionally remained off.

Troubleshoot in this order

Follow the sequence below so that a configuration issue is not confused with a dead outlet, lost Wi-Fi, or an appliance limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the plug’s actual outlet state. Use the app, hub, or physical indicator. If it reports off, turn it on once manually. If it immediately turns off again, continue with the automation and power-path checks below.
  2. Find the recovery setting for this exact model. Search the app and manual for Power loss recovery, Restore on power loss, Default state, Status after power failure, or a similar label. If the choices include forced on, select that only when the appliance is designed to start safely whenever power is applied. If the setting is absent, the model may not support configurable recovery; Roku specifically warns that unsupported devices do not show the option.
  3. Test the outlet without the smart plug. Plug a known-working device directly into the wall outlet. If it does not run, inspect the power path rather than changing app settings.
  4. Check GFCI protection and the breaker. Reset a tripped GFCI receptacle where appropriate and inspect the circuit breaker. A smart plug cannot restore an outlet that is still de-energized upstream.
  5. Try a different wall outlet. Roku recommends this as a basic isolation step. Avoid using an extension cord or power strip during diagnosis unless the product documentation explicitly permits it.
  6. Confirm connectivity if local power is present but app control is missing. Verify that the phone and plug have access to the configured Wi-Fi network, review the device status in the app, and install available firmware updates. A plug can continue supplying power while being temporarily unreachable, so app visibility alone does not prove that the outlet is off.
  7. Review schedules, scenes, and automations. A rule triggered when the plug reconnects can turn it off moments after power returns. Temporarily disable relevant schedules and test a manual command.
  8. Test the appliance on direct wall power. If it still does not resume when connected directly, the appliance’s own recovery behavior, switch, fuse, or fault is the likely cause. Consult its manual rather than assuming the smart plug is defective.
  9. Apply the appliance’s restart requirement. Some equipment needs its front-panel switch left in an on position, a standby setting enabled, or a manual restart after a complete outage. Follow the appliance manufacturer’s procedure.
  10. Repeat the test with a controlled outage only if safe. Do not repeatedly unplug high-power or motor-driven equipment while it is operating. If a controlled test is appropriate, record the plug’s state before interruption, its state after restoration, and whether the appliance resumes independently.

How to choose the right recovery mode

Forced on

Forced on energizes the outlet after power returns. It is useful for equipment that is intended to run whenever mains power is available and that the manufacturer says can restart safely. It can also create an unexpected start after an outage, so do not use it blindly with heaters, cooking appliances, tools, or anything that could move, heat, or spill unattended.

Forced off

Forced off keeps the outlet de-energized after restoration. This is appropriate when an unexpected restart is undesirable or when you want to inspect the appliance before reapplying power.

Previous or last state

Previous-state recovery is a compromise: the plug attempts to reproduce its pre-outage state. It is not the same as “always turn on.” If the plug was off before the outage, an off result is the intended result. If the plug was on, the outlet may return on, but the appliance can still remain in its own standby or stopped state.

Electrical compatibility is a separate requirement

Before changing the recovery mode or buying another plug, compare the plug’s voltage, current, and maximum load with the appliance’s ratings. Do not transfer ratings from one model or country to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, the Xiaomi Mi Smart Plug (WiFi) FAQ cited for its discussed model and market lists a maximum load of 3,680 W, 220–240 V AC, and 16 A. Those figures apply to that model and market only; they are not a safe assumption for another smart plug. Motors, compressors, heating elements, and power supplies can have startup or inrush characteristics that make a simple wattage comparison insufficient. Use the exact plug specification and the appliance manufacturer’s guidance.

What to check when comparing replacement plugs

  • Exact-model support: Confirm that the precise model, not merely the product family, documents recovery after a power loss.
  • Available modes: Look for previous state, forced on, and forced off, and identify the factory default.
  • Where it is configured: Determine whether the setting is in the plug’s app, a hub, a local web interface, or an advanced-parameter menu.
  • Behavior when offline: Check whether the plug stores the recovery choice locally or needs cloud connectivity to apply it.
  • Electrical ratings: Match voltage, current, maximum load, and any motor or heating-load restrictions to the appliance.
  • Safety after unexpected restart: Prefer forced off or manual confirmation for equipment that could create heat, motion, pressure, or a hazard when it starts unattended.
  • Documentation quality: Favor a model whose manufacturer clearly explains power-loss behavior rather than relying on an assumption based on another brand.

Quick diagnosis by symptom

Symptom after power returns Most useful next check
Plug indicator and app both show off Inspect the recovery setting and select an appropriate forced-on option if the model provides one.
Plug shows on, appliance is off Test the appliance directly and consult its auto-restart or power-failure instructions.
App cannot reach the plug, but a connected lamp works Check Wi-Fi access, device status, and firmware; the outlet may still be energized.
Plug turns on, then off again Review schedules, scenes, and automations that run on reconnection.
Nothing works from the outlet Try another outlet, reset a tripped GFCI, and check the breaker.
Recovery option is missing Verify the exact model and documentation; the device may not support configurable power-loss recovery.

Limits of what a smart plug can guarantee

A documented recovery mode can tell you how the outlet is expected to behave, but it cannot guarantee that an appliance will resume a program, preserve unsaved data, or restart safely. Firmware updates and regional versions can change menu labels or defaults. Manufacturer documentation is therefore the authority for both the plug’s recovery feature and the appliance’s restart behavior.

If the plug repeatedly loses its setting, overheats, clicks unexpectedly, or shows damage, stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s safety and replacement guidance. Do not open a mains-powered plug or bypass protective devices to force an appliance to restart.
