If another Pixel is missing from an app’s camera picker, the issue is usually Connected Cameras setup or compatibility—not a faulty second lens. Google’s Connected Cameras feature lets supported apps use another Pixel as an external camera. Check the app and both phone models first, then enable Connected Cameras, cross-device services, and the same Google Account on both devices.
First, identify which camera you mean
A Pixel has two different ways to provide a camera source, and they are easy to confuse.
- Built-in lenses: The phone’s own wide, ultrawide, or telephoto cameras are selected inside the app’s normal camera controls. A second phone will not appear in that lens selector.
- Connected Cameras: Another physical device, including an eligible Pixel, appears as an external camera source in a supported app.
This article addresses the second case: using one Pixel to supply video to an app running on another Pixel or compatible device. If you are trying to make an ultrawide or telephoto lens appear on the same phone, Connected Cameras is not the relevant feature.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Google describes the feature in its Connected Cameras help guide. The guide lists Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok as supported apps. An app can therefore be fully up to date and still not show a second Pixel if it is outside that list or if its camera interface does not expose the feature.

How Connected Cameras works
The primary phone runs the supported app. The other Pixel acts as an external camera over the phone-to-phone connection. The second phone does not become an additional lens in the primary phone’s Camera app; it is a selectable source inside the supported app’s Connected Cameras picker.
“This feature only works for Pixel to Pixel devices and requires cross-device services to be enabled on both devices.”
That requirement explains many apparent failures. Being signed in on two Pixel phones is not enough by itself: both phones must meet Google’s model rules, cross-device services must be enabled on each one, and the phones must use the same Google Account for the pairing flow.
What the picker should look like
When Connected Cameras is enabled, the picker may not remain fully expanded. Google says the control can be minimized; in that state, open the supported app and tap the Connected Camera icon to expand it. If you only look for a large camera-source panel, you may miss a minimized control and conclude that the second Pixel is unavailable.
Only one external camera at a time
Google permits one external camera connection at a time. If another external camera is already connected, disconnect it before choosing Add Pixel. A previous session can therefore block a new phone from appearing even when both Pixels are otherwise eligible.

Check compatibility before changing settings
Google’s published compatibility is expressed by device families rather than a complete model-by-model list. Use the following rules as a first filter, then verify the exact model names in each phone’s Settings page.
| Camera source or app | What Google documents | What to do if it does not appear |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel connected to another Pixel | Pixel 6 and later can connect to other Pixels, except Pixel 10 and Pixel A-series devices. | Confirm that neither phone is a Pixel 10 or a Pixel A-series model, and that the phones fall within the documented Pixel family range. |
| Supported app | Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok are listed. | Test in one listed app before diagnosing the phone. An unlisted app is not established as compatible by Google’s guide. |
| Pixel 10 or Pixel A-series as a source | Google separately documents GoPro and USB camera support for Pixel 10 and Pixel A-series devices from Pixel 6a onward. | Those options are different from connecting a second Pixel. Do not assume that USB or GoPro support means Pixel-to-Pixel support. |
The exception is important: “Pixel 6 and later” does not mean every newer-numbered Pixel can connect to another Pixel. Google specifically excludes Pixel 10 and Pixel A-series devices from the Pixel-to-Pixel rule. The help page does not provide a complete exact-model matrix, so do not infer eligibility for a particular submodel solely from its marketing name.

Likewise, an app being capable of recording video does not establish that it supports Connected Cameras. Start with one of Google’s five listed apps to separate a compatibility issue from a setup issue.
Set up the second Pixel correctly
Perform these steps on the phone running the app first. Keep both phones nearby and unlocked while pairing.
- Enable Connected Cameras. On the primary Pixel, open Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Connected Cameras. Turn on Use Connected Cameras.
- Open a listed app. Launch Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok. Look for the Connected Camera control in the app’s camera interface.
- Expand a minimized picker. If the picker is reduced to an icon, tap the Connected Camera icon. The expanded view is where you can add or select an external source.
- Choose Add Pixel. Select Add Pixel in the picker. The primary phone should search for an eligible nearby Pixel.
- Accept the permission prompt on the external Pixel. The second phone must approve the on-screen request before it can provide its camera feed.
- Confirm the account and services. Make sure cross-device services are enabled on both phones and that both phones are signed in with the same Google Account. These are pairing prerequisites, not optional enhancements.
- Disconnect any existing external source. If another external camera is connected, end that connection and retry Add Pixel. Only one external camera can be active at once.
After the permission step completes, select the newly listed Pixel as the source in the app. If the phone never appears, continue with the compatibility and pairing checks below rather than repeatedly tapping the picker.

When the Connected Cameras control is missing
The feature is switched off
Return to Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Connected Cameras on the primary phone and verify that Use Connected Cameras is on. Enabling it on only the external phone does not complete the setup; the phone running the app also needs the feature enabled.

Test with one of Google’s listed apps. If the picker appears there but not in another app, the difference is app support rather than a missing Pixel connection. Google’s help material does not establish Connected Cameras support for every social, streaming, or video app.
The picker is minimized
A minimized Connected Camera icon can look like an ordinary control or be overlooked in a crowded camera screen. Tap that icon to expand the picker before concluding that no external camera is available.
When the second Pixel is not listed
Verify both models
Open each phone’s system information and write down the exact model family. Pixel-to-Pixel eligibility is limited to the families described above. A phone being branded Pixel does not by itself prove that it can be used as the external source; Pixel 10 and Pixel A-series devices are the explicit exclusions in Google’s Pixel-to-Pixel documentation.
Enable cross-device services on both phones
Google requires cross-device services to be enabled on both devices. Check the relevant cross-device setting on each phone, not just the primary phone. The official instruction does not provide a single universal menu path for every Pixel software build, so use Settings search for “cross-device services” if the option is not immediately visible.

Use the same Google Account
Sign in to the same Google Account on both Pixels. Different accounts can prevent the Add Pixel pairing flow from presenting the external phone, even when the phones are physically close and otherwise compatible.
Complete the approval on the external phone
After choosing Add Pixel, watch the second Pixel for a permission prompt. Unlock it and accept the request. If the prompt is dismissed or expires, start Add Pixel again and keep both screens awake until the approval is complete.
Remove a competing camera
Look for an existing Connected Cameras session and disconnect it. The one-camera limit applies even if the earlier source is no longer the device you want to use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check app permissions without overestimating what they fix
Permissions are a sensible secondary check, especially if the app cannot open any camera. On the Pixel running the app, open Settings → Apps → [the supported app] → Permissions and review Camera access. Google defines Camera permission as permission to take pictures and record video; its app-permissions guide does not say that granting Camera permission alone creates the Connected Cameras picker.

Granting the permission can remove a basic app-camera failure, but it will not override an unsupported model, an unlisted app, disabled cross-device services, a different Google Account, or an already occupied external-camera slot. Treat it as one branch of the diagnosis, not the complete fix.

Separate a Connected Cameras problem from a broken camera
Try the phone’s own Pixel Camera app on the phone that is failing. If its built-in camera works and only one supported third-party app cannot find the other Pixel, focus on that app’s support, permissions, and current state. If the Pixel Camera app also crashes, shows a black preview, or cannot record, use Google’s general troubleshooting sequence.
Google’s Pixel Camera recovery sequence
- Restart the Pixel.
- Clear the Camera app’s cache.
- Update the Camera app and Android.
- Check whether the problem remains in safe mode.
These steps come from Google’s Pixel Camera troubleshooting guide and address failures of the phone’s own camera software. They do not make an unsupported external-camera pairing compatible. If the built-in camera works but a single installed app continues to fail, troubleshoot or reinstall that app. Persistent symptoms affecting the phone’s camera hardware or multiple camera apps may require Google support or repair.
A practical diagnosis by symptom
| Symptom | Most useful check | Likely boundary |
|---|---|---|
| No Connected Camera control anywhere | Enable Use Connected Cameras, then test a listed app and expand the minimized icon. | Feature disabled, unsupported app, or picker minimized. |
| Picker opens but Add Pixel finds nothing | Verify both models, cross-device services on both phones, and the same Google Account. | Compatibility or pairing prerequisite. |
| The external Pixel appears but will not connect | Accept the prompt on the external phone and disconnect any other external camera. | Pending approval or one-camera limit. |
| One app fails while another listed app works | Review that app’s Camera permission and app-specific state. | App-level issue rather than a Pixel-to-Pixel eligibility problem. |
| The phone’s own camera also fails | Restart, clear Camera cache, update, and test safe mode. | General Pixel Camera software or hardware fault. |
This sequence avoids replacing a phone or buying another camera before checking the feature’s actual requirements. Google documents compatibility and setup rules, but it does not publish a failure rate, adoption percentage, or dated release history that would justify a more precise probability.
What to do if your model is excluded
If either phone is a Pixel 10 or a Pixel A-series device, the documented Pixel-to-Pixel path may not apply. Google separately lists GoPro and USB camera connections for Pixel 10 and Pixel A-series devices from Pixel 6a onward, but those are alternative Connected Cameras sources, not a way to make a second Pixel appear. Choose an alternative only if it meets your app and recording needs; it does not change the Pixel-to-Pixel compatibility rule.
For an eligible pair, finish the checks in this order: supported app, exact model families, Use Connected Cameras, minimized picker, cross-device services on both phones, same Google Account, permission approval, and the one-camera limit. If all of those pass and the built-in camera is healthy, the remaining fault is most likely specific to the installed app or the current phone software rather than the basic concept of using a second Pixel as an external camera.
