A Samsung Galaxy widget is usually not gone permanently: it may have moved to another Home screen panel, been placed in a widget stack, been removed, or become unavailable because its app no longer supports it. A widget that is visible but stale usually points to an app, software, battery, or device-state problem.
Start with the low-risk checks—look through every panel and stack, confirm the app is not hidden, test the app itself, then close apps, run the available Device care optimization, restart, update the phone and app, and remove and re-add the widget. If the app works and is current but its widget still fails, Samsung’s guidance is to contact the app developer.
Use the symptom to choose the right fix
| What you see | Most likely explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The widget is nowhere on the Home screen | It was moved, removed, or placed in a stack | Swipe through all Home screen panels and swipe across each widget stack |
| The widget does not appear in the Widgets picker | The app is hidden, the app has no widget, support was removed, or a managed profile restricts it | Check hidden apps and the app/profile, then confirm whether the app still offers a widget |
| The widget is present but blank or frozen | The underlying app, phone software, or background operation needs attention | Open the app, then follow Samsung’s close, optimize, restart, update, and re-add sequence |
| The widget shows old information | The app has not refreshed, or the widget’s refresh behavior is controlled by the app | Open the app, check its own data, and do not assume every widget refreshes on a fixed interval |
| A Cover screen widget disappeared | It was removed, moved in the Cover screen carousel, or the model handles widget settings differently | Double-tap the Cover screen, swipe through widgets, and use the model-appropriate Cover screen settings |
Galaxy phones and tablets do not all use identical menus. Labels and available controls vary by model, One UI/software version, region, and whether you are troubleshooting the main Home screen or a foldable phone’s Cover screen.

1. Check every Home screen panel
Swipe left and right across the Home screen, including panels you rarely use. A widget can be moved without its app being removed. If you find it, touch and hold the widget, then drag it to the panel and position where you want it. Leave enough empty space for its full size; a crowded panel can prevent it from being placed where you expect.

2. Look inside widget stacks
Samsung Home screens can place several widgets in one stack. A stack looks like one widget, but it contains additional pages. Swipe left or right directly over the widget to reveal the other widgets. If the missing item is there, it has not disappeared; it is simply sharing the stack. Touch and hold the stack if you need to move it or change its arrangement.
3. Search the Widgets picker
To check whether Galaxy still knows about the widget:
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Scroll to the relevant app and select the widget type or configuration.
- Tap Add, then place it on the desired panel.
If the app is listed but offers several widget sizes or designs, choose the one that fits your available Home screen space. If the app is absent from the picker, continue with the checks below rather than assuming the phone is malfunctioning. Samsung identifies lack of widget support as one possible reason an item does not appear; an app can work normally while offering no widget at all, or a later app release can remove a previously available widget.

4. Make sure the app is not hidden
A hidden app may also prevent its widget from being available in the normal picker. Check Settings > Home screen > Hide apps on Home and Apps screens. If the app appears in the hidden list, remove it from that list and check the Widgets picker again. Menu wording can differ slightly by software version, so use Settings search for “Hide apps” if the path is not shown exactly.

5. Check app and profile restrictions
Not every Android app supplies a widget. A company-managed work profile can also restrict which apps, data, or widgets are available. If the app belongs to a work profile, ask the organization’s administrator whether Home screen widgets are allowed. If a personal copy and a work-profile copy of the same app exist, make sure you are checking the profile that contains the data you want to display.
When the widget is visible but does not update
Test the underlying app first
Tap the widget and open its full app. Confirm that the app launches, signs in if required, loads current data, and can perform the same action the widget is supposed to provide. This separates a widget problem from an app or account problem:
- If the app also fails to load or shows old data, troubleshoot the app, its account, network connection, or service first.
- If the app works normally and is up to date, but the widget remains blank or stale, the widget component itself may need to be rebuilt or supported by the developer.
There is no single refresh interval that applies to every Galaxy widget. The app developer controls how often a widget requests data, and some widgets update only after an event, a manual action, or an app launch. Do not treat a particular number of minutes as a universal Samsung promise.
Use the lowest-risk troubleshooting order
Samsung’s published sequence is designed to clear common temporary faults without erasing personal data. Perform the steps in order and check the widget after each major change:

- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
- Close running apps. Open the recent-apps view and close the apps you are not using, including the widget’s app. Reopen the app and check the widget.
- Optimize the device. Open Settings > Device care (called Battery and device care on some versions) and use the available optimization controls. Samsung also points to battery features; review the battery controls for the widget’s app if your model exposes them. Exact options differ by device and software.
- Restart the phone or tablet. A restart reloads the Home screen, widget host, and background services. After the device starts, open the app once and check the widget again.
- Install device software updates. In Settings, search for Software update and install an available update according to the on-screen instructions. Keep the device charged or connected to power during a major update.
- Update the app. Open the device’s app store, find the app that supplies the widget, and install any pending update. An app update can restore compatibility or correct a widget-specific defect.
- Remove and add the widget again. Touch and hold the widget, choose the remove option, then use the Widgets picker to add it again. Re-adding recreates the widget instance and requires you to select its configuration again.
Do not remove the app itself as a first response. Removing a widget from the Home screen does not normally delete the app or its account data, but deleting an app can have separate data and sign-in consequences.
How to remove and re-add a broken widget
Remove the existing instance
Touch and hold the widget until its context menu appears. Tap Remove or the equivalent remove-from-Home-screen command. If you see only an option to remove the entire stack, open the stack first and confirm which item you intend to remove. The goal is to remove the widget instance, not uninstall its app.
Add a fresh instance
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Choose the app and widget design.
- Tap Add.
- Place it on a panel with sufficient space.
- Complete any setup screen, such as selecting an account, location, folder, or display style.
Test the newly added widget before rebuilding a stack or changing its size. If the new instance works, the original instance was likely corrupted or carrying an invalid configuration. If the new instance fails in the same way, continue with the app and system checks rather than repeatedly adding identical copies.

What to do when the app works but the widget still fails
After you have closed apps, optimized the device, restarted, installed updates, and re-added the widget, open the app one more time. Verify that it is current and that the relevant data is visible in the app itself. If those conditions are met but the widget still does not function, Samsung’s support wording is direct: “If the app works and is up to date, but the widget does not function, contact the app developer for further support.”

When contacting the developer, include the Galaxy model, One UI/Android version, app version, widget name and size, whether the problem is missing data or a missing widget entry, and the steps that reproduce it. Screenshots of the widget and the app showing current data can help the developer distinguish a display problem from an account or service issue.
Use Safe mode only to test interference from another app
If a widget cannot be added after the normal sequence, Samsung lists Safe mode as a way to identify interference from a problematic or recently installed third-party app. Safe mode loads the phone with a limited set of software, so the exact entry method depends on the Galaxy model and software version. Use Samsung’s model-specific Safe mode instructions, then check whether the widget can be added or works correctly.
If the problem disappears in Safe mode, think about apps installed or updated shortly before the widget failed, especially launchers, customization tools, security tools, battery managers, or overlay apps. Exit Safe mode, remove or update the suspected app one at a time, and test after each change. If the widget fails in Safe mode as well, third-party interference is less likely; continue with system and app support rather than deleting unrelated apps at random.
Factory reset is a last escalation
Samsung includes a factory data reset as a final option when a widget cannot be added and the problem persists. A reset erases personal content, accounts, installed apps, and settings from the device. It is not a normal widget refresh step.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
Before considering it, back up photos, messages, contacts, authenticator information, and files; confirm that you know the credentials needed to restore your accounts; and make sure the issue is not limited to one unsupported app. After the reset, install system updates and test the widget before restoring every third-party customization. If the issue returns only after a particular app is restored, that app is a stronger suspect than the Galaxy Home screen itself.
Fixing a missing widget on a Galaxy Z Flip Cover screen
Cover screen widgets use a separate interface from the main Home screen. On supported Galaxy Z Flip models:
- Double-tap the Cover screen to wake it.
- Swipe left or right through the existing Cover screen widgets. The widget may have been moved rather than removed.
- To check available widget controls, open the phone and go to Settings > Cover screen > Widgets, where that setting is provided.
- To restore a removed widget, double-tap the Cover screen, touch and hold a widget, swipe to Add widget, and choose the widget you want.
Samsung specifically notes that the Cover screen widget switch is unavailable on the Z Flip6. Do not look for that control on a Z Flip6 or assume its absence indicates a fault. Use the Cover screen’s own add-widget flow and the controls available on that model. Other Z Flip generations can expose different options, so model and software version matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy battery and optimization settings can matter
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance tells users to optimize with Device care and battery features, but it does not define one widget-specific background limit or guarantee a refresh cadence. Battery-saving behavior can differ by model, software version, app category, and the device’s current state. Use the controls your phone provides, then judge success by whether the app and widget display current information after a restart and normal use.
If the app is intentionally restricted by a work profile, administrator policy, or a device-wide power mode, you may not be able to change the relevant setting yourself. In that case, the administrator or app developer must confirm whether background updates and widgets are supported.
Common mistakes that make the problem look worse
- Checking only the first Home screen. Widgets can be on any panel or inside a stack.
- Assuming every app has a widget. Widget support is optional and can change between app versions.
- Expecting all widgets to refresh on the same schedule. Refresh behavior belongs to the app and its service.
- Changing many settings at once. Follow the sequence so you know which step helped.
- Uninstalling the app immediately. Start with closing, optimizing, restarting, updating, and re-adding the widget.
- Using a factory reset as routine maintenance. Reserve it for persistent failures after backups and less destructive tests.
- Applying Home screen instructions to a Cover screen. Foldable Cover screens have separate controls and model-specific exceptions.
A practical decision path
- Swipe across every Home screen panel and every widget stack.
- Open the Widgets picker and search for the app.
- If it is absent, check Settings > Home screen > Hide apps on Home and Apps screens, app support, and any work-profile restrictions.
- If it is present but stale, open the underlying app and verify that the app itself works.
- Close running apps, run the available Device care and battery optimization, restart, and install phone and app updates.
- Remove and re-add the widget.
- If the app works and is up to date but the widget still fails, contact the app developer.
- If the widget cannot be added at all, test in Safe mode; consider a factory reset only as a final escalation after a complete backup.
For a Cover screen, begin with the Cover screen’s own widget carousel and settings, remembering that Samsung says the widget switch is not available on Z Flip6.
