A PS5 cannot play PlayStation 2 games from disc. Sony’s PS5 safety guide explicitly excludes PlayStation 2 format software, so a PS2 game that fails to start is not evidence of a dirty disc or broken drive. Cleaning it, changing settings, or updating the console will not make that game playable as PS2 software on PS5.

Why a PS5 won’t play a PS2 game disc

Sony’s PS5 safety guide states that PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from a disc. This is a software-format compatibility limit, not a problem you can fix by cleaning the disc or repairing the console. If the disc is a PS2 game, stop troubleshooting it as though it were a supported PS5 game.

Sony’s wording is explicit: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” In other words, this is not a case where only certain PS2 games are known to have trouble, or where a setting needs to be enabled. The stated restriction applies to PS2-format software on disc.

The word “DVD” can cause confusion. Some PS2 games were distributed on DVD media, and PS5 disc-drive models can read specified DVD formats. But the kind of physical disc and the game software stored on it are separate compatibility questions. A PS5’s ability to read a supported DVD does not mean it can run a PS2 game stored on one.

Think of it as two separate checks: first, whether the console can physically read that type of disc; second, whether the software format on it is supported. A DVD movie and a PS2 game disc may use the same broad disc medium, but that does not make their contents interchangeable. DVD support is not a backdoor for PS2-game playback.

That distinction helps narrow down the cause. If a PS2 game fails but other supported discs work, the console may be reading discs normally; the PS2 game format is the reason it will not play. Repeatedly reinserting the PS2 disc or trying software fixes cannot remove that limitation.

Check whether your PS5 has a disc drive

Before testing any physical media, identify the console configuration. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no disc drive and cannot read physical games or media. Sony lists later Digital Edition model groups that can use a separately sold compatible disc drive. Compatibility depends on the exact model group, so use Sony’s model-specific instructions rather than assuming every Digital Edition can accept a drive.

Adding a compatible drive to an eligible model gives that console a way to read supported disc formats. It does not add support for PS2 game software. If you already have a disc-drive model, or an eligible Digital Edition with its compatible drive attached, continue with the checks below only for discs that PS5 supports.

This model check matters most when the symptom is described as “the PS5 won’t read a disc.” A Digital Edition without a drive cannot read any physical disc, whether it is a PS5 game, DVD, or PS2 title. That is different from a drive-equipped console that reads supported discs but does not play PS2-format software. Check the console’s exact model group before buying a drive accessory; an accessory intended for one model group should not be assumed to work with every Digital Edition.

What to check when a supported disc will not read

These checks apply to supported PS5 or PS4 games, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs—not to PS2 games. Make one change at a time and reinsert the disc after each step so you can tell what affected the result. If you have already established that the disc is a PS2 game, there is no benefit to running through every step as a way to make that game launch.

  1. Confirm the console configuration. Check that your PS5 has a disc drive or that an eligible Digital Edition has its compatible drive attached. If you are unsure of the model, use the model-specific compatibility instructions from Sony.
  2. Check the disc orientation. Eject the disc and insert it again with the correct side facing the drive. Sony’s troubleshooting illustration shows the labeled side facing left when a PS5 is vertical. If your console is positioned differently, follow the orientation for that position in Sony’s instructions. Do not force a disc that does not insert smoothly.
  3. Inspect and clean the disc gently. Look for fingerprints, smudges, dust, or scratches. Sony recommends wiping a disc with a soft, clean cloth. A suitable cloth you already own is adequate; avoid touching the reading surface when you put the disc back in. Cleaning may help with dirt or fingerprints, but it cannot make an unsupported PS2 game compatible.
  4. Test another supported disc. Try a supported PS5 or PS4 game, Blu-ray, or DVD. If other supported discs work, the issue is more likely specific to the original disc, its format, condition, or recording. If several supported discs fail, the console’s disc-reading function may need attention.
  5. Contact PlayStation support or use PlayStation Repairs if supported discs still fail. Sony’s error-code guidance directs users to support or repairs when its checks do not resolve the problem.

Use a light touch when cleaning: the suggested step is a gentle wipe with a soft, clean cloth, not an attempt to polish away damage. A cloth is a basic care item, not a repair tool. It may remove surface dirt or fingerprints, but it cannot reverse scratches, correct a disc’s recording quality, or change what software formats the PS5 supports. A specialty product is not required for the cleaning step Sony describes.

The comparison test is useful because it separates a disc-specific problem from a console-wide one. If a PS5 game, Blu-ray, or DVD works in the same drive, that is evidence the console can read at least those supported formats; it does not mean the PS2 game should work. If one supported disc fails while several others work, inspect that particular disc and confirm its format. If multiple supported discs fail, recheck orientation and model configuration, then follow Sony’s support or repairs route rather than repeatedly testing the same discs.

Do not start with a factory reset when the only failure is a PS2 game disc. A reset cannot change the format restriction. Sony documents additional software-recovery steps for persistent problems, but those steps are relevant to supported-media failures—not a way to enable PS2 disc playback. If you are considering recovery steps for a separate, persistent issue, follow Sony’s current instructions and pay attention to any data consequences before proceeding.

How to interpret the results

What you observe Likely explanation What to do
A PS2 game fails, but other supported discs work PS2 software is not supported from disc on PS5. Stop troubleshooting that PS2 game as a drive fault.
One supported disc fails, while other supported discs work The disc’s format, condition, or recording characteristics may be the issue. Check the format and condition; for DVDs, check whether the disc was finalized.
Several supported discs fail The drive or disc-reading function may need service. Verify the model and orientation, then use PlayStation support or repairs.
A Digital Edition has no compatible drive attached That configuration has no physical disc-reading capability. Check whether your exact model group supports Sony’s separately sold compatible drive.

These are clues, not a guarantee about the condition of a particular disc or console. One failed PS2 disc does not by itself show that a drive is defective, because that software format is excluded. Likewise, one failed supported disc does not prove the console needs service; its format, condition, or recording characteristics may explain the result. The more useful signal is whether multiple known-supported discs fail in the same configuration.

Which physical formats and discs have limits?

Sony’s PS5 safety guide lists supported media including PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray; compatible PS4-format Blu-ray; Ultra HD Blu-ray; BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE (with a version exception); DVD-ROM; DVD+R/RW; DVD-R/RW; and AVCHD. Sony’s media-playback information gives further format details. The exact supported media and compatible-drive availability can depend on console model and market, so check the local PlayStation support information for your PS5 rather than treating a regional list as universal.

This list describes supported physical media, not a promise that every disc with one of those labels will work in every situation. A PS2 game remains unsupported as PS2-format software even if it is on DVD media. And a DVD that falls within a listed category can still be unreadable because it is unfinalized, damaged, dirty, or affected by recording quality. Check both the medium and the content or condition instead of relying on the word “DVD” alone.

Sony says PS5 cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. Its safety guide also says unfinalized DVDs cannot be played and notes that scratches, dust, recording quality, and the recording device’s characteristics can prevent some discs from working. A disc that is physically a DVD may therefore still be unreadable for reasons unrelated to PS2 compatibility.

Sony warns against using 8 cm discs, non-circular discs, cracked or deformed discs, repaired discs, or discs with paper or stickers. Do not try to force a damaged or altered disc into the drive. If one disc is in poor condition or uses a format the console does not support, testing a different supported disc is a safer and more useful diagnostic step.

In particular, do not treat a burned copy as a substitute for an original game disc or assume that changing how a disc was recorded will make PS2 software compatible. Sony excludes burned discs, and its guide notes that recording quality and the recording device can affect playback. Those are separate limitations from the PS2 software-format restriction.

Can you play that PS2 game another way?

Possibly, but it depends on the specific title and your region. Check whether the game has an officially available current release or is supported on another platform you own. Do not assume every PS2 title has a digital version or remaster; availability varies by game and market. The fact that a title exists on a PS2 disc does not establish that Sony or another platform currently offers it in a playable form for your setup.

If your goal is specifically to use the physical PS2 disc, a PS5 is not the right console for that format. A repair, a replacement disc, or a PS5 drive accessory will not change the software-format exclusion. Before purchasing another version, confirm that the specific title is actually offered for a platform you can use, since availability is not universal.

What the error message does—and does not—tell you

A message that a disc cannot be read can sound like a diagnosis of a dirty disc or failing drive, but the message alone does not override the compatibility rules. First identify the disc: PS2 game, supported PS5 or PS4 game, Blu-ray, DVD, or another format. If it is a PS2 game, the known format restriction explains why it will not play. If it is a supported disc, then orientation, condition, format details, and whether other supported media work can help narrow the issue.

This approach also prevents unnecessary troubleshooting. There is no need to repeatedly clean an intact PS2 disc, buy a drive accessory for an incompatible model, or reset the console solely because a PS2 game will not launch. Reserve the physical checks and Sony’s support route for supported discs that continue to fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my PS5 read my PS2 disc?

PS5 does not play PlayStation 2 format software from disc. That is a compatibility limit, not something cleaning, changing settings, or updating the console can fix.

Can PS5 play PS2 games on disc?

No. Sony’s PS5 safety guide says PlayStation 2 format software cannot be played from a disc on PS5.

Can a PS5 play PS2 DVDs?

No. Some PS2 games use DVD media, but DVD media support and PS2 game-software support are separate. A PS5 that can read supported DVDs still cannot run PS2-format software from disc.

What if my PS5 says the disc can’t be read?

Identify the disc format first. For a PS2 game, the format restriction explains the failure. For supported media, confirm the console has a compatible disc drive, check orientation, gently clean and inspect the disc, then test other supported discs. Contact PlayStation support or use PlayStation Repairs if several supported discs still fail.

Will cleaning or replacing a PS2 disc make it work on PS5?

No. A soft, clean cloth may remove dirt or fingerprints, but it cannot make PS2 software compatible with PS5. Replacing a PS2 disc does not change that format limitation either.

The Bottom Line

A PS5 cannot play PS2 games from disc, even when the game is on DVD. Check the console’s drive configuration and troubleshoot only if supported PS5/PS4 games, Blu-rays, or DVDs also fail. If multiple supported discs do not read after checking orientation and condition, use PlayStation support or repairs.
