A portable power station’s watt-hour rating describes the energy stored in its battery pack, not the energy an appliance will receive. Depth-of-discharge limits, inverter or converter losses, the station’s own idle consumption, and the appliance’s behavior all reduce delivered energy, so runtime must be estimated for the exact model, output and load.

Rated capacity and usable capacity are different numbers

Manufacturers express a power station’s battery size in watt-hours (Wh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh). EcoFlow’s US guide, dated July 28, 2025, defines rated capacity as the maximum electricity a fully charged station can store. It is a battery-pack figure measured before the station’s electronics and operating limits are taken into account.

When you plug in an appliance, energy travels through a particular output path. A battery-management system may stop discharge before the cells are completely empty, an inverter may convert battery DC into AC with losses, and the station may consume power while it is switched on. The appliance can also draw more or less than its nameplate rating. The result is that outlet energy is lower than the printed Wh figure, and the difference is not a single industry-wide percentage.

A station can therefore be correctly advertised as having, for example, 1,000 Wh of rated capacity while delivering substantially less than 1,000 Wh to an AC appliance. The useful figure depends on the product’s published discharge limit, conversion efficiency, standby draw and output mode.

Four mechanisms reduce energy available to your appliance

1. The battery may not be discharged completely

Portable stations normally reserve some energy to protect the cells and maintain safe operating limits. The permitted depth of discharge (DoD) is the fraction of the pack that the system allows you to use. A 90% DoD means the calculation starts with 90% of rated capacity, not the full pack value.

Depth-of-discharge guidance is product- and series-specific. EcoFlow’s published discussion applies its stated guidance to DELTA-series products; it should not be treated as a rule for every station or every brand. If a specification does not state a usable-energy figure or DoD value, the honest status is “not stated,” rather than an assumed percentage.

2. AC conversion loses energy

Battery cells supply direct current (DC). The AC outlets require an inverter to create alternating current, and that conversion is not perfectly efficient. Inverter efficiency changes with load, temperature and operating point. A station can also have separate conversion losses for its USB, 12-volt or other DC outputs.

For an AC estimate, the basic model is:

Estimated runtime (hours) = battery capacity (Wh) × depth-of-discharge fraction × inverter efficiency ÷ (appliance load (W) + station self-consumption (W))

Use the factors only when they are published for the exact station and configuration. A manufacturer may disclose a combined usable-energy factor instead of separate DoD and inverter-efficiency values. Those approaches are not interchangeable unless the maker defines them that way.

3. The station consumes power while running

Control electronics, displays, cooling fans and the inverter itself use energy. This fixed overhead matters most with small or long-running loads. If a station draws 15 W while its AC system is enabled, a 20 W appliance effectively places about 35 W on the battery-side runtime calculation before other losses are considered. Turning on an AC inverter for a tiny USB device can therefore waste a large share of the available energy.

4. The load is not always steady

An appliance’s label usually describes running power, not every moment of operation. Motors and compressors can demand a startup surge several times higher than their steady draw. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, pumps and some power tools may start successfully only if the station’s inverter has adequate surge capability. Even when the station can start the appliance, cycling and changing loads make a simple watts-divided-by-hours calculation less precise.

Calculation step Value
Rated battery capacity 1,152 Wh
Depth-of-discharge factor 90%
Inverter-efficiency factor 85%
Capacity after those factors Approximately 881 Wh
Self-consumption used in the example About 15 W

The same reported maker example estimates a 100 W blender runtime of approximately 7.66 hours after including about 15 W of self-consumption in the denominator. The calculation is intended for the stated AC configuration. It is specifically cautioned against compressor loads such as refrigerators and air conditioners, whose startup and cycling behavior are different from a steady blender load.

This is reported manufacturer guidance, not an independent laboratory test. It demonstrates why rated Wh alone cannot predict outlet runtime, but its factors should not be transferred to another model.

A second example: Jackery Explorer 1000 v2

GearSpec Outpost reported a simplified Jackery calculation for the Explorer 1000 v2: 1,070 Wh multiplied by a single 0.8 factor equals 856 Wh. The cited guide does not split that factor into separate depth-of-discharge and inverter-efficiency terms. It is therefore a product-specific method, not evidence that all stations deliver 80% of their ratings.

Why a runtime formula can disagree with real appliances

Compressor appliances have startup demand

Jackery Support’s article, updated August 10, 2026, warns that appliance startup demand can exceed running demand and gives the example of a refrigerator or air conditioner requiring a surge several times its rated power. A formula based on a constant wattage may predict enough hours while the inverter still trips when the compressor starts. Check both continuous output and surge output before using a station with a motor-driven load.

Ratings are nominal, while consumption changes

A “200 W” television may draw less in an energy-saving mode and more at a bright setting. A refrigerator cycles between periods of high and low consumption. A blender may run only intermittently rather than continuously. Jackery Support illustrates the scale of the difference with a 1,070 Wh station: approximately 1.1 hours for an 800 W hair dryer and 4.1 hours for a 200 W LCD TV. Those are illustrative values, not guarantees for every device, temperature or station configuration. The support article states: “Actual runtime may vary depending on the device’s power consumption and the power station’s efficiency.”

AC, DC and USB outputs follow different paths

An appliance connected to an AC outlet uses the inverter and its idle draw. A USB or 12-volt DC device may bypass the AC inverter, but it still passes through output regulation electronics with their own losses and limits. A runtime figure supplied for AC should not be assumed for a DC or USB load, and vice versa. When a maker publishes separate runtimes by output type, use the one matching your connection.

How to estimate runtime for your own setup

  1. Identify the exact model and output. Record the station’s rated Wh, whether you will use AC, DC or USB, and any published usable-capacity, DoD, efficiency or self-consumption figures for that mode.
  2. Measure or verify the appliance load. Use the appliance’s measured operating watts when available rather than relying only on a label. A plug-in watt meter can help characterize an AC appliance, but it measures the appliance’s draw; it does not measure the station’s internal capacity or establish inverter efficiency.
  3. Check startup requirements. For compressors, pumps, motors and tools, compare the appliance’s startup demand with the station’s continuous and surge output ratings. A station that cannot start the load will not deliver the runtime predicted by an arithmetic formula.
  4. Apply the maker’s method. Insert the exact DoD and efficiency factors, or the exact combined factor, published for that model. Add the station’s self-consumption to the appliance watts when the maker’s formula calls for it.
  5. Account for duty cycle. If the appliance cycles or runs intermittently, use its measured average consumption over a representative period. Do not substitute a brief peak or a nameplate maximum for that average.
  6. Compare the result with the station’s runtime table. If your estimate and the manufacturer’s example differ, check whether they use different output modes, idle-draw assumptions, temperatures or load levels. Treat the result as an estimate, not a promised duration.

How to compare two portable power stations

Rated Wh is useful for a first size check, but it is not enough to predict delivered energy. Compare the following items side by side:

Comparison point Why it matters What to record
Rated battery capacity Indicates the stored pack energy Wh or kWh, including the product version
Usable-energy method Shows how the maker accounts for discharge limits and conversion losses Published usable Wh, separate factors or combined factor
Self-consumption Fixed overhead can dominate small loads and long sessions Idle or operating watts, output mode and test conditions
Output path AC, DC and USB paths have different conversion stages Mode used for your appliance and any mode-specific runtime
Continuous and surge output Determines whether motors and compressors can run or start Running watts, surge watts and surge duration if stated
Load compatibility Actual appliances vary in startup demand and duty cycle Measured watts, startup behavior and expected operating pattern
Charging and expansion options A larger input or supported expansion can restore energy sooner, but does not increase energy stored at that moment Supported charging sources, expansion limits and conditions

If a manufacturer omits a usable-capacity factor, mark that field as not stated. Do not fill it with a rival product’s percentage. A product page that lists only rated Wh provides less information for runtime planning than one that explains its usable-energy method.

Solar charging does not change the rated capacity

A compatible solar panel can recharge a supported station over time. It does not increase the station’s stored energy at a given moment or turn rated Wh into guaranteed outlet energy. Solar input varies with panel orientation, weather, temperature, shading and the station’s charging limits. Treat solar specifications as recharge information, separate from the battery’s usable-capacity calculation.

Common mistakes and their fixes

  • Using rated Wh as outlet Wh: Apply the model’s published usable-energy method instead.
  • Borrowing an efficiency percentage from another brand: Keep factors tied to the exact station because inverter efficiency, discharge limits and idle consumption differ.
  • Ignoring idle draw: Include the station’s stated self-consumption, especially for low-wattage devices.
  • Dividing capacity by nameplate watts for a compressor: Check startup surge and use an average duty-cycle load where possible.
  • Assuming an AC runtime applies to USB or 12-volt output: Use the output-specific figure or method.
  • Interpreting an example as a guarantee: Manufacturer examples are conditional on their stated load, mode and assumptions.

What the evidence does—and does not—support

The reviewed manufacturer examples establish that usable energy is lower than rated capacity and that the reduction is model-specific. They do not establish a universal average loss for the portable-power-station market. No comprehensive, current, cross-brand efficiency benchmark is supported, and no hands-on test establishes a single percentage that applies to all products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a purchase or backup-power plan, the most defensible approach is to match the station’s documented output and runtime method to the appliances you actually intend to run. If the maker does not disclose usable energy, plan conservatively, verify appliance consumption with measurements where practical, and avoid presenting a calculated runtime as a guarantee.
