Portable power stations lose some charge in storage because their batteries naturally self-discharge. The percentage is not universal: Jackery says its Plus and v2 series lose about 5% per month, while its Pro series loses about 5–10% per month. A station can lose charge faster if it is left in standby, has an output enabled, or still powers a connected device, but the sources available do not establish one standby-drain rate for every model. Treat the published figure for your exact model as the useful baseline, then follow that model’s storage instructions.

What causes the battery level to fall?

Natural self-discharge continues when the unit is switched off

Battery cells slowly lose stored energy through internal chemical reactions even when no appliance is connected. Jackery Support describes this directly: “Even when not in use, a portable power station will gradually lose charge due to natural self discharge.” The process is gradual and does not mean the station is automatically faulty.

Self-discharge is affected by the battery chemistry, battery-management system (BMS), cell age, temperature and the way the manufacturer defines “off.” A display that is dark is not proof that every internal circuit is unpowered; the BMS and protection electronics may remain available to monitor the pack.

Standby electronics and connected loads can add drain

Leaving an AC inverter, USB output, wireless function or other output enabled can consume energy while the station appears idle. A small connected device can also draw power continuously, even if it is not actively being used. Some models enter a low-power sleep state after a period without a load; others keep selected ports or monitoring features active. Because these behaviors differ by model, do not treat a self-discharge percentage as a measurement of standby consumption.

How much charge loss is normal?

Published Jackery examples

Jackery Support’s July 2, 2026 guidance gives these model-family estimates:

Jackery family Reported loss while stored How to interpret it
Plus and v2 series About 5% per month Jackery’s guidance for those families, not a guarantee for every individual model
Pro series About 5–10% per month Jackery’s guidance for that family; the range is not an industry-wide benchmark

These figures describe gradual self-discharge and should not be applied to other brands or to Jackery models outside the named families. No cross-brand independent benchmark or generally applicable monthly percentage is established by the sources used here.

Why a percentage can look larger than expected

The percentage shown on a front panel is an estimate, not a laboratory fuel gauge. Battery-management software may recalculate the state of charge after a restart, temperature change or recharge. A one-time drop immediately after storage can therefore reflect gauge correction as well as energy loss. Compare readings under similar conditions and over a period long enough to reveal a trend.

Temperature also matters. High heat can accelerate chemical aging and self-discharge, while cold conditions can temporarily reduce the available capacity. Store the station within the temperature limits in its own manual and keep it out of direct sunlight.

What “off,” “standby” and “storage” mean

Off

“Off” normally means the user-facing outputs and display are shut down. It does not necessarily mean the battery-management electronics are disconnected. Verify the model’s manual for any requirement to hold a power button, disable a master switch or turn off individual DC, USB or AC sections.

Standby or sleep

Standby is a low-power operating state. The station may keep a display controller, wireless connection, inverter monitor or charging logic awake so it can respond quickly. If an output is enabled, the inverter may consume energy even without an obvious appliance load.

Storage mode

Some products document a specific maintenance or storage cycle; others simply specify a target charge and inspection interval. Do not copy a cycle from another manufacturer. The EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus manual, for example, recommends a three-month maintenance cycle and warns against leaving the device uncharged or unused for more than six months. The EcoFlow E980 manual also specifies a periodic storage cycle, but its directions are model-specific. These examples show why the exact manual controls the procedure.

How to store a portable power station safely

1. Remove every external load

  1. Unplug appliances, chargers, extension leads and solar input cables.
  2. Turn off AC, USB, DC and wireless outputs using the controls specified for your model.
  3. Check that no charging icon or output-wattage indicator remains active.

Removing loads prevents a hidden device or inverter from being mistaken for natural self-discharge.

2. Choose the charge level stated for your model

Storage targets differ. Jackery’s general long-storage FAQ says to avoid storing at 0% and keep remaining capacity above 80%. The Jackery Explorer 300 Plus user manual instead recommends checking the unit regularly and charging it to about 60–80% for long storage. The manual warns that storing it depleted for three to six months can reduce performance or leave it unable to recharge.

Those instructions are not interchangeable. Use the current manual for your exact model and region. If the manual gives a specific storage mode or charge window, that instruction takes precedence over a generic article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Unplug after a full charge when the manufacturer says to do so

Jackery says its stations use a BMS to prevent overcharging, but its support guidance still recommends unplugging after the unit reaches 100%. That is Jackery’s advice for its products; it does not establish that every brand should remain connected indefinitely or that every model has the same charging behavior.

4. Keep the environment cool, dry and shaded

Jackery’s general long-storage FAQ lists a 10–40°C storage range, recommends a cool, dry location and says to avoid high temperatures and direct sunlight. The Explorer 300 Plus manual provides a different temperature instruction for a six-month storage period. Because the duration-qualified limits differ, do not merge them into one universal range; check the manual for the exact station and intended storage duration.

Keep the unit away from water, condensation, heaters and enclosed spaces that can become hot. Do not cover ventilation openings while the station is operating or charging.

5. Inspect it on the specified schedule

Jackery Support recommends powering on and checking a stored station approximately every three months. At that inspection, look for swelling, damage, unusual odor, corrosion, a warning icon or a large unexplained percentage drop. Recharge to the model’s documented storage level, then shut it down and unplug it again if the instructions call for that.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other manuals may use a different interval. The RIVER 3 Plus example calls for a three-month maintenance cycle, while its manual warns against leaving the device uncharged or unused beyond six months. Follow the interval and cycle written for your own model.

A practical way to measure your station’s idle loss

  1. Prepare the test: disconnect every input and output, disable wireless features if the manual permits, and record the displayed percentage, date and ambient temperature.
  2. Use the documented storage state: shut down the station exactly as the manual describes, rather than merely turning off the display.
  3. Wait for a meaningful interval: a few hours can be dominated by gauge adjustment; a month or a manufacturer-recommended inspection period is more informative.
  4. Record the result: note the new percentage, temperature and whether any warning appeared.
  5. Repeat once: a second interval helps distinguish a one-time calibration change from a continuing drain.

Do not compare readings taken at very different temperatures or after different charge routines. The result is an observation about that unit, not proof of a universal rate.

When a rapid drop needs troubleshooting

First rule out an active load

  • Check AC, USB and DC output indicators.
  • Remove hubs, chargers, refrigerators, routers and other devices that may draw a small continuous current.
  • Disable wireless monitoring or remote-control features if the manual identifies them as optional power users.
  • Confirm that a solar controller, vehicle cable or other input is not repeatedly waking the system.

Check the storage conditions

Review the temperature, humidity and sunlight exposure. A station stored in a hot vehicle or damp shed may show abnormal behavior and can suffer accelerated aging. Move it to a dry, shaded location within the documented limits before repeating the observation.

Verify the gauge after a normal recharge

Recharge using an approved input and the model’s specified limits. A state-of-charge display can be inaccurate after long storage, so a normal charge cycle may change the displayed percentage without representing an equivalent sudden battery loss. Do not open the enclosure or attempt a cell-level repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Escalate when the model’s own guidance is exceeded

The available sources do not define a cross-brand percentage at which a battery is officially defective. If the loss is substantially faster than the exact model’s published rate, the station repeatedly shuts down, refuses to recharge or shows a fault, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting and service channel for that model. A percentage drop alone is not enough to diagnose a failed battery.

Can a solar panel prevent storage loss?

A compatible solar panel can recharge a compatible station, but it does not stop natural self-discharge. The Explorer 300 Plus manual documents model-specific solar-panel, connector and input requirements. Confirm the panel type, connector, voltage, current and maximum input for your exact station before connecting it. Solar input is an optional way to restore charge, not a requirement for routine storage.

Storage guidance at a glance

Question What is established What you must verify
How much does it lose? Jackery reports about 5% per month for Plus and v2, and about 5–10% per month for Pro. The exact model’s published rate and the conditions behind it
What charge level should I leave? Jackery’s general FAQ says above 80%; the Explorer 300 Plus manual says about 60–80%. The current manual for your model and region
How often should I check it? Jackery Support says approximately every three months; some other manuals specify their own cycle. The inspection or maintenance interval in your manual
Should it stay plugged in? Jackery recommends unplugging after 100% despite BMS overcharge protection. Your manufacturer’s charging and storage instructions
What temperature is safe? Jackery’s general FAQ lists 10–40°C; another manual may attach different limits to a specific duration. The temperature range and storage duration stated for your unit

Bottom line for an unused power station

Some loss is expected: self-discharge continues even when the station is not powering anything. Jackery’s published examples put the rate at roughly 5% per month for Plus and v2 families and 5–10% per month for Pro, but no universal cross-brand rate is established. Disconnect all loads, use the storage charge level and temperature limits in the exact manual, inspect the unit on schedule, and seek model-specific service if the loss is much faster than documented or the station will not recharge.
