A portable music player usually ignores a song for one of four reasons: the file uses an unsupported codec or container, its technical settings exceed the exact model’s limits, it has copy protection, or it was transferred to the wrong place or in an unsupported USB mode. The filename ending in .mp3, .flac or .aac is not proof that the player can decode it.
Start with the player’s exact model number and official manual. Then compare one problem file’s codec, container, bitrate, sample rate, bit depth, file size and protection status with that model’s specifications before buying accessories, formatting storage or replacing the player.
What “not recognized” actually means
Portable players do not share one universal compatibility list. “MP3 player” describes a product category, not a common hardware and software standard. Two models from the same manufacturer can support different codecs, storage types, folder structures and firmware features.

A player may react to an incompatible file in several ways:

- The song is absent from the music library even though the computer can see it.
- The file appears but cannot be opened or produces a “format not supported” message.
- The transfer completes on the computer, but the player does not index the track.
- Only some files in an album or folder appear.
These symptoms point to different checks. A file-specific failure usually indicates encoding, limits or DRM. Every newly copied file being absent suggests a USB mode, destination-folder, storage or library-index problem.
Codec, container and extension are different
A container holds encoded audio data and metadata; a codec is the method used to encode the audio. The extension tells the operating system which type of file is expected, but it does not describe every internal parameter. A player can support a familiar extension while rejecting a codec variant, unusual profile or unsupported container inside it.
For example, a model may accept AAC only within a particular bitrate range, or accept WAV/linear PCM only at certain sample rates and bit depths. Renaming a file from one extension to another does not convert the audio and can make detection less reliable.
Technical limits can reject an otherwise supported format
Players can impose limits on bitrate, sampling frequency, bit depth, channel layout or individual file size. The limits belong to the specific model and sometimes to a particular firmware version. A lossless file can therefore be valid yet too large or encoded with parameters the player does not implement.

Copy protection is a separate barrier
Digital-rights management (DRM) can prevent playback even when the extension and bitrate look correct. Some manuals require a format to be DRM-free; protected WMA and AAC files are explicitly excluded on certain Sony models. A file downloaded from a service or copied from an older protected library may need an authorized, unprotected version rather than a different filename.
Transfer and indexing failures look like format failures
A cable connection can expose a device to the computer without placing files where the player scans. The host operating system may also use a transfer mode the player or computer does not support. Disconnecting during a copy can leave an incomplete file that appears in a folder but is not playable. Internal storage and a removable card may use different scan rules as well.
Check the exact model before changing the files
Find the model number printed on the player, in its Settings screen or on the original documentation. Search that model’s official manual for “supported formats,” “audio specifications,” “maximum file size,” “USB connection,” and “music folder.” Do not substitute a similarly named model: a specification for one generation is not a guarantee for another.

Example: Sony NW-A25 family
Sony’s 2015 documentation for the NW-A25 family lists MP3, WMA, FLAC, linear PCM/WAV, AAC/HE-AAC, Apple Lossless and AIFF, with format-specific extensions and limits. The figures below describe that family only.

Do not turn those numbers into universal limits. Another player can allow a different bitrate, reject a listed codec, or impose a smaller file-size ceiling.
Example: differences among SanDisk players
SanDisk’s format tables show why the model name matters. The tables list MP3 bitrates from 8 to 320 kbps and AAC from 16 to 320 kbps for applicable models. Ogg Vorbis is not supported on the Clip Sport Plus, Voice and Go models, while FLAC and Ogg support is tied to named models and, in some cases, current firmware. A file that works on one SanDisk player therefore cannot be assumed to work on another.
SanDisk’s documentation also identifies DRM-free requirements for named formats and models. Check the row for your exact player rather than relying on a general “SanDisk supports FLAC” statement.
Inspect a problem file’s real properties
Compare the file itself with the specification, not just its name. On a computer, open the file’s Properties or Get Info panel and, where the operating system does not show audio details, use a reputable media-information utility that reads the stream metadata.

Record these fields for one file that fails and one that works:
- Container and codec, such as MP3, AAC, FLAC or linear PCM.
- Filename extension and whether it matches the actual container.
- Bitrate, noting whether it is constant or variable when the player’s manual distinguishes them.
- Sampling frequency, expressed in kHz.
- Bit depth, especially for FLAC, WAV and other lossless or PCM files.
- Number of channels and any unusual multichannel setting.
- Total file size; compare it with the model’s maximum per-file size.
- DRM or other copy-protection status.
If metadata reports a codec the manual does not list, treat that as a compatibility failure even when the extension looks familiar. If all properties fit, move to the transfer and library checks rather than repeatedly converting the same file.
Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the exact player and firmware. Write down the full model number and check whether the manufacturer lists separate specifications for firmware revisions or regional editions.
- Choose one failing file. Inspect its codec, container, extension, bitrate, sample rate, bit depth, size and protection status. Compare each field with the model’s table.
- Try one known-compatible, unprotected file. Use a small file whose format and settings are explicitly listed for the player. This diagnostic separates a file-specific problem from a general connection or indexing problem; it is not a guarantee that every file with the same extension will work.
- Check the USB connection mode. Select the mode supported by both the player and the computer’s operating system. On the SanDisk examples, Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) works with Windows but not macOS, while Mass Storage Class (MSC) works with both.
- Copy to the expected destination. Use the model’s documented Music folder or another folder registered for import. Do not rename default folders unless the manual says that is safe.
- Wait for the copy to finish. Eject the device through the operating system, then disconnect it. A partially copied file can be listed but unreadable.
- Refresh the library using the model’s documented method. Some players rescan after disconnecting; others have a refresh command or scan only registered folders. There is no universal rescan procedure.
- Test internal and removable storage separately. If a known-good file works in internal memory but not on a card, check the player’s card capacity, filesystem and firmware requirements before changing the card.
- Consider firmware only after the basic checks. Read the exact model’s update instructions and compatibility notes. Do not interrupt an update or erase storage unless the manufacturer specifically requires it.
USB modes, operating systems and destination folders
MTP versus MSC
MTP presents the player as a managed media device. MSC presents storage more like a removable drive. The supported mode depends on both the player and the host operating system. SanDisk states that MTP is available on Windows but not macOS for its documented players, whereas MSC works on Windows and macOS. If a macOS computer can browse a player but cannot copy music in MTP mode, switch to the model’s supported MSC option if the manual provides one.

- Connect the player with the supplied USB Type-C cable.
- On the player, select File Transfer when the USB-use prompt appears.
- Copy music into the internal Music folder, or into a folder that the player has registered for import.
- Allow the transfer to finish before disconnecting the cable.
- Safely eject the player from the computer.
The same guide warns not to disconnect the USB Type-C cable during data transfer and not to format the player’s memory on the computer. Those warnings apply to the NW-A306; follow the equivalent instructions for your own model instead of assuming its folder names or USB prompts are identical.
When the computer sees the file but the player does not
The file is in an unscanned folder
Move a test copy to the exact music folder named by the manual. Some players scan only the internal Music directory or folders explicitly registered for import. A deep, unusual folder hierarchy can also be outside the model’s indexing rules.
The library index is stale
Disconnect cleanly and use the player’s documented library-refresh command, if it has one. If the manual does not describe a refresh action, power-cycle the player and allow its normal startup scan to complete. Do not delete database files or format storage merely because a menu lacks a refresh option.

Removable storage is incompatible
A card can be readable by the computer but rejected by the player because of capacity, filesystem, speed, physical format or firmware support. Check the exact model’s card requirements and test a known-good file in internal memory first. The evidence does not support one universal card type or capacity for all portable players.
Firmware or end-of-support status matters
Firmware can add or remove format support and change indexing behavior. Install only updates listed for the exact model and region. SanDisk states that its MP3 players have reached end of support, so older model-specific procedures and downloads may be harder to maintain; preserve the model number and existing firmware details when seeking help.
What not to do first
- Do not buy a new cable, memory card or player before confirming whether the current file meets the model’s specifications.
- Do not format the player’s memory from the computer as a generic repair step.
- Do not rename extensions and assume that has converted the audio.
- Do not interrupt a transfer because the progress indicator appears idle.
- Do not apply instructions for a similar-looking model or a different firmware generation.
A practical decision tree

When to seek model-specific help
Have these details ready: manufacturer and full model number, firmware version, computer operating system, exact filename extension, codec and encoding settings, whether the computer can see the file, where it was copied, whether another known-good file appears, and the player’s exact error message. With that information, support can distinguish an encoding problem from a connection, storage or indexing problem without destructive trial and error.
