A PlayStation trophy that stays locked usually has one of two causes: the game has not registered its exact requirement, or the game has registered the achievement but your console’s trophy list has not synchronized. Check the trophy’s own conditions first, then sync trophies on the correct console, verify network and service availability, and treat license restoration as an access fix rather than a trophy fix. If those steps fail, the game title, trophy name, console generation and game version are needed to investigate a possible game-specific issue.
Start with the right diagnosis
Do not assume that a locked trophy is automatically a PlayStation Network problem. Trophy rules are defined by each game. PlayStation’s official guidance says, “Depending on the game, you can earn trophies by accomplishing objectives such as clearing levels, finding collectibles, or completing certain tasks.” It also explains that “The number and grades of trophies, and the conditions for earning them, vary from game to game.”
The grades are Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, but the grade does not tell you how a particular game detects completion. A collectible trophy may require every item, a mission trophy may require a specific sequence, and a challenge trophy may depend on a mode or difficulty named in its description. Treat the individual trophy entry—not a general assumption about how trophies work—as the controlling instruction.

Verify the exact trophy requirement
A trophy can remain locked because the game’s condition is narrower than it first appears. A description may require a particular level, collectible set, difficulty, mission state, mode or task sequence. The general PlayStation trophy instructions cannot determine the hidden or game-specific details for an unspecified title.
View trophy details on PS5
- From the PS5 home screen, select your profile picture.
- Choose Trophies.
- Select the game.
- Select the trophy to open its details and read the stated condition.
View trophy details on PS4
- Open Trophies from the PS4 function screen.
- Select the game.
- Review the individual trophy’s description and status.
Compare the description with what actually happened in the game. Confirm that you used the account whose trophy list you are viewing, the intended save, and the required game mode. If the objective was completed on a different account, a different save or a mode excluded by the description, repeating the same action may not meet the requirement.
Check the wording, not just the apparent result
Read every qualifier in the trophy text. “Complete” may refer to a named mission rather than an entire chapter; “find” may refer to all collectibles in a set; and a task may need to be completed under a stated difficulty or mode. The wording may also identify a particular game version. If the requirement is not explicit enough to explain what happened, note the exact text and seek title-specific guidance rather than guessing at a console fix.

The trophy list is associated with the PlayStation Network account that earned the trophy. The same game can therefore show different locked and unlocked entries when different accounts are used. Before troubleshooting, look at the profile currently signed in and make sure it is the profile that performed the objective.
Also distinguish a game’s installed version from the console generation. A PS4 version and a PS5 version can have separate trophy lists or different conditions, depending on the title. When asking for help, state which version is installed instead of saying only that you played the game on a PlayStation console.
If you are using a transferred save, the save confirms where you played, but it does not by itself prove that the trophy event was recorded. The decisive evidence is whether the game reported an unlock and whether the corresponding account list contains it after synchronization.
Separate an unregistered achievement from a stale trophy list
The key question is whether the game itself reported an unlock. If there was no in-game unlock notification and the trophy remains locked, synchronization cannot create the missing achievement; return to the trophy condition and the game’s own requirements. If the game did report the trophy as earned but the console list does not show it, the local list may simply be out of date. Manual synchronization is the appropriate next step.
This distinction matters because syncing transfers trophy information; it does not change the rules programmed into a game or award an objective that the game never recorded. It is possible to complete the stated action and still have no trophy to synchronize if the game did not recognize the trigger.

Synchronize trophies manually
PS5 procedure
- Select your profile picture on the home screen.
- Choose Trophies.
- Press the Options button.
- Select Sync Trophies.
Allow the operation to finish, then reopen the game’s trophy list and check the individual entry. If the console cannot contact PlayStation Network, synchronization may not complete; move to the connection and service checks below before trying again.
PS4 procedure
- Open Trophies from the function screen.
- Press the OPTIONS button.
- Select Sync With PlayStation Network.
Return to the game’s list after the sync completes. A successful sync can make an already-recorded trophy appear, but it is not proof that the game’s condition was satisfied if the entry remains locked.
What to check after syncing
Stay on the same account and open the same game entry you checked before syncing. Compare the individual trophy status, not merely the total number or percentage shown for the game. If the entry is still locked and there was never an unlock notification, go back to the requirement. If it was reported as earned but remains absent, record the result and move on to network, account and title-specific checks rather than repeatedly starting the sync command.
Check the connection, PlayStation services and system software
Online synchronization depends on a working connection to PlayStation Network. An online trophy requirement can also fail when the game cannot reach its service, even if the offline portion of the objective was completed.
- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet and that your PlayStation Network sign-in is active.
- Check the current PlayStation service-status page for an alert affecting sign-in, gaming or account services. Do not treat an outage as the cause until the current status actually shows one.
- Install any available console system-software update. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance includes current system software among the checks for related game access and download problems.
- After the connection or service issue is resolved, run the manual trophy-sync procedure for your console generation.
An online requirement and a synchronization problem are related but not identical. A game may need its own online service to validate an objective, while the console separately needs PlayStation Network access to update the account list. Identify which of those two events failed before concluding that the trophy itself is broken.
If the service status is normal and the console is online but one particular trophy remains locked, the evidence points back to the game’s requirement or a title-specific defect rather than a general synchronization outage.
Fix a padlocked or inaccessible game separately
A padlock, missing game access or a request to purchase the title is a license or account problem, not evidence that the trophy condition is wrong. First verify that you are signed in to the account that owns the game or has the relevant entitlement. A trophy earned under another account will not appear in the list you are currently viewing.
Restore licenses on PS5
- Open Settings.
- Choose Users and Accounts.
- Select Other.
- Choose Restore Licenses.
Restore licenses on PS4
- Open Settings.
- Choose Account Management.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Choose Restore.
PlayStation states that restoring licenses does not affect saved data. Use it when the console cannot verify your right to launch the game or downloadable content. It is not a guaranteed remedy for a trophy that never registered, and it should not replace checking the trophy’s condition or synchronizing an already-earned entry.

If the game launches normally, there is no padlock and only one objective is missing, a license reset is addressing the wrong symptom. Return to the game condition and account first.
Prevent trophy problems during a console transfer
When moving data from a PS4 or another PS5, prepare the source console before starting the transfer. PlayStation’s transfer guidance calls for the same account on the source and destination consoles, current system software, synchronized trophy information on the source console, and both consoles connected to the same network.
- Sign in to the same PlayStation Network account on both consoles.
- Update the system software on the source and destination consoles.
- On the source console, open the trophy menu and perform a manual synchronization.
- Connect both consoles to the same network for the transfer.
- After the transfer, open the trophy list on the destination console and verify the account before troubleshooting an individual entry.
Synchronize before transferring, not only after. The source console is where the latest trophy information is available, and the transfer instructions specifically call for that information to be synchronized first. If the source list was never synchronized, the destination may not contain the latest trophy information.
A transfer also cannot repair a game-specific condition that was never recorded before the move. If the trophy was locked on the source console, verify the requirement and any title-specific issue rather than assuming the transfer caused it.
When the trophy still will not unlock
General PlayStation instructions do not establish whether a particular title has a bug, an undocumented trigger or a requirement that was performed in the wrong order. Once you have checked the description, account, save or mode, network status and synchronization, document the exact case instead of repeatedly changing unrelated console settings.
Record these details
- The full game title and, if applicable, whether you are playing the PS4 or PS5 version.
- The exact trophy name and its displayed description.
- Your console generation: PS4 or PS5.
- The game version installed when the attempt was made.
- The account used and the save or game mode in which the requirement was attempted.
- Whether the game displayed an unlock notification.
- Whether the trophy appears after a manual sync.
- Any error message, padlock icon or online-service warning.
- The troubleshooting steps already completed.
Use those details when contacting the game’s publisher or PlayStation Support. A publisher may know about a title-specific bug or exact workaround that cannot be inferred from the general trophy menu. PlayStation Support can help distinguish an account, network or platform issue from a problem inside the game.
Why the game title matters
There is no universal unlock action that applies to every PlayStation game. The same symptom—an objective completed with a locked entry—can mean a missed qualifier in one title and a game defect in another. Support needs the exact trophy text, version and steps so it can compare your case with that game’s documented behavior.

Syncing before confirming the condition
Synchronization is useful when an earned trophy is absent from the list. It does not turn an incomplete or incorrectly performed objective into a completed one.

Restoring licenses as a universal trophy fix
License restoration is for launch and entitlement problems. If the game starts normally and only one requirement is locked, restoring licenses is unlikely to address the game logic involved.
Assuming every delay is an outage
Check the live service status rather than inferring an outage from one missing trophy. A normal status combined with a single affected trophy points toward the game condition or a title-specific issue.
Changing accounts during troubleshooting
Trophies belong to the PlayStation Network account that earned them. Switching accounts can make a correct result appear to be missing because you are viewing a different trophy list.

Confusing access with achievement
A padlocked game and a locked trophy are separate symptoms. Restore a license when the console cannot verify access; inspect the trophy condition when the game opens but the objective remains locked.
Expecting console maintenance to guarantee an unlock
General guidance does not establish that database rebuilding, hardware changes or other maintenance procedures will award a trophy. Do not present those actions as guaranteed fixes for an unregistered achievement.

- If the game recorded it, synchronize trophies using the menu path for your console.

- For a missing trophy after transfer, synchronize the source console and confirm that the same account was used on both consoles.

The most reliable fix depends on which of these states you are in: an unmet game condition, a trophy list that needs synchronization, a network or service interruption, an account-license problem, or a game-specific defect. Identifying that state before taking action prevents a license reset or repeated sync from being mistaken for a solution to the wrong problem.

How do I sync trophies on PS4?
Open Trophies from the function screen, press OPTIONS, and select Sync With PlayStation Network.
Will syncing unlock a trophy the game never registered?
No. Synchronization updates the account list with trophy information already recorded. It can reveal an earned trophy that is missing from the local list, but it does not change a game’s requirement or create an unregistered achievement.
Should I restore licenses when a trophy will not unlock?
Only when the game is padlocked, will not launch, or the console cannot verify your entitlement. On PS5 use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
