A picture message can fail because it uses a different service from an ordinary text. Depending on the phone and conversation, it may go through iMessage, RCS, or MMS—and each has different network, carrier, settings, and recipient requirements. First identify which method the conversation is using, then narrow the problem by checking whether it affects one person, every recipient, or only large photos.
First, identify what kind of message is failing
“Text” can mean several things. On iPhone, blue bubbles indicate iMessage; green bubbles can indicate SMS, MMS, or RCS. In Google Messages, the send-method indicator shows whether the message is expected to use Wi-Fi or mobile data, SMS, or MMS. These clues help, but they do not diagnose the cause by themselves. Apple explains the message types and troubleshooting checks, while Google describes the send-method indicators in Google Messages.
- If ordinary texts and pictures both fail, check cellular service, Wi-Fi or mobile data, and the messaging app.
- If ordinary texts work but pictures do not, focus on MMS or RCS support, data connectivity, attachment size, and messaging settings.
- If the problem affects only one person, verify that contact’s number or email address, country code, and blocked status before changing network settings.
- If it affects only a group chat, check group messaging support and settings.
Check your connection, carrier service, and plan
iMessage, RCS, and MMS need Wi-Fi or mobile data. SMS ordinarily needs cellular service; Wi-Fi calling may provide an SMS route if your carrier and device support it and the feature is enabled. For MMS in particular, a phone may need mobile data even when Wi-Fi is connected. Confirm that airplane mode is off, the phone has signal, and the SIM is detected.
MMS and RCS also depend on carrier support and account status. Check whether your plan or available credit allows the message type, and ask the carrier whether MMS or RCS is supported for your line and region. Google’s Google Messages troubleshooting guide recommends checking the connection, SIM, carrier support, plan or credit, and default messaging app.

Fix MMS problems on Android
In Google Messages, make sure the app is up to date and set as the phone’s default SMS app. Then check that the SIM is seated and recognized, signal is available, and mobile data works. If MMS still will not send, Google recommends restoring the access point name (APN) settings to their defaults. The exact menu path differs by Android version and phone maker, so look in the device’s mobile network or SIM settings rather than relying on a universal label.
RCS is a separate option, not a guarantee that a picture will send. It must be supported and activated for the people in the conversation and their carrier/device setup. It can use Wi-Fi or mobile data; when RCS is unavailable, Google Messages may offer SMS or MMS instead. See Google’s guides to turning on RCS chats and RCS availability and fallback behavior.

Fix photo-message problems on iPhone
Check network access, available storage, the recipient’s details, and whether your carrier supports the message type being used. Apple notes that a carrier may limit MMS attachment size and that larger files can take longer; iPhone may compress attachments. If a full-size image fails, try the lower-quality image options Apple recommends, such as Send Photo Previews or Low-Quality Image Mode when available.

If only large or high-quality photos fail
The carrier may impose an MMS attachment-size limit; Apple does not give a universal limit, so there is no single file-size threshold that applies to every carrier. Try sending a smaller or lower-quality version. If both ends and the network support it, iMessage or RCS may provide another route. Do not assume switching transport will work: compatibility depends on the devices, carriers, region, and conversation participants.
Image quality can also change in transit. Google says MMS carriers compress images, which can reduce quality; its Google Messages instructions describe quality choices for RCS media. See Google’s instructions for sending photos and videos.

When a contact, group, or phone change is involved
Only one recipient cannot receive the picture
Check the saved number, country code, or email address where relevant, and make sure you have not blocked the person. Google also recommends removing and re-adding a contact as a troubleshooting step. If the address is correct and the issue persists only with that person, the problem may depend on their device, service, or carrier compatibility.

The issue began after switching phones or messaging apps
If you moved from an iPhone to Android, deactivate iMessage for your phone number so messages are no longer routed as iMessages. If you changed messaging apps and messages stopped arriving, Google recommends checking whether RCS chats need to be turned off in the previous setup. These steps target switching-related delivery problems; they are not general fixes for every failed photo.
Check storage before trying again
A device with too little free space may have trouble receiving images or videos. Apple advises: “Make sure your device has enough space to receive images and videos.” Free storage if needed, then ask the sender to try again. This check is especially relevant when the recipient cannot receive media, rather than when a message fails only while sending.
When to contact your carrier
Contact the carrier if signal and data work but MMS still fails, if you cannot confirm that your plan supports picture messaging, or if the phone’s messaging settings appear correct and the failure continues across recipients. Give them the phone number, recipient scope, whether the message is individual or group, the approximate attachment size, and whether ordinary SMS works. Those details help distinguish a line or carrier restriction from a device setting.
