If a new watch face is missing from your Pixel Watch, first apply it from the Google Pixel Watch app: open Watch faces, select the design, and tap Use on watch. If it still does not appear, check the watch’s face list for a hidden face, allow time for a transfer to finish syncing, install pending phone and watch updates, and verify that the face is still compatible and available for your particular watch. Google does not publish a fixed wait time for face synchronization, so a precise “wait 10 minutes” rule is not reliable.

Start with the symptom you actually have

The right fix depends on where the process stops. Use this table to choose the shortest troubleshooting path before changing settings.

The face appears in the phone app, but the watch still shows the old one Confirm Use on watch, then inspect the watch’s available-face list and hidden faces.

A single missing face does not, by itself, justify erasing the watch. The steps below isolate the common causes without destroying your settings or data.

Apply the face from the Pixel Watch app

Installing or selecting a design in the phone app and actually applying it to the watch are related but separate actions. Complete the application step explicitly:

Google Pixel Watch 5 (45mm) - Android Smartwatch - Obsidian - Wi-Fi | Gemini Intelligence, domed display, comprehensive health and fitness tracking
  • The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
  • Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
  • Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
  • Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
  1. Open the Google Pixel Watch app on the connected phone.
  2. Tap Watch faces.
  3. Browse or search for the design you want.
  4. Open its details and tap Use on watch.

Keep the phone and watch near each other while the app sends the selection. Then look at the watch itself. Touch and hold the current face, swipe left or right through the available faces, and tap the desired design. This second check confirms whether the face reached the watch even if the phone app’s preview has not refreshed.

If Use on watch is not shown, the app may be displaying a design that is only being browsed, a face that is unavailable for the connected device, or an app state that needs updating. Continue with the compatibility and update checks rather than repeatedly tapping the preview.

Check whether the face is hidden on the watch

Wear OS can hide a face from the watch’s face carousel while leaving it visible in the phone app. That makes the app look as though the face is installed even though swiping through the watch’s faces does not show it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the face-management screen

  1. On the watch, touch and hold the current watch face.
  2. Swipe through the face carousel and open the face-management or edit controls if they are shown.
  3. Look for a hidden, removed, or “show” option associated with the missing design.
  4. Unhide or add the face, then select it as the active face.

The exact control names and placement can vary with the watch model and Wear OS version. Google’s general Wear OS instructions explain the hidden-face behavior, but they do not guarantee identical menus on every release. If no hidden-face option appears, return to the Pixel Watch app and apply the face again.

Do not confuse a face being hidden with a face being unavailable. A hidden face is still installed locally; an incompatible or discontinued face will not be offered for installation on that device.

Allow synchronization after a watch transfer or restore

Face synchronization can lag after setting up a replacement watch, restoring a backup, or completing Watch Transfer. Google specifically notes that watch faces “may take some time to sync after Watch Transfer is completed.” No official duration is given, so neither an exact number of minutes nor a guaranteed deadline should be assumed.

Make the transfer as reliable as possible

  • Keep the watch powered and connected to the paired phone while synchronization is pending.
  • If Google’s transfer instructions tell you to keep the new watch on its charger, follow that instruction during the restore.
  • Use the watch normally only after the transfer process has finished; interrupting setup can leave apps, faces, tiles, or settings in an incomplete state.
  • After the transfer settles, reopen the Pixel Watch app and use Watch faces to apply the design again.

A backup restore can bring back apps, data, settings, faces, and tiles, but restoration is not proof that every older face remains installable. A face may restore only when it is still supported for the new watch.

Google also says a watch backup itself can take up to a few days in some circumstances. That is a backup-completion statement, not a promised watch-face synchronization time; do not use it as a countdown for this problem.

How to tell a delayed transfer from a failed transfer

A delayed transfer usually affects a watch that has just been replaced, reset, or restored while other setup work is still completing. The face may remain visible in the phone app, and the watch may show other restored content gradually. Keep the watch charging and online, then check the face list again after the transfer activity has stopped. If the watch has been fully set up for some time, the face is listed as compatible, and no other data is arriving, move to the hidden-face, update, and compatibility checks instead of waiting indefinitely.

Update the phone, watch, and watch-face dependencies

Out-of-date software can prevent the app from sending a face or stop the watch from updating its face list. Install updates on both sides of the connection.

Update the Pixel Watch app on the phone

  1. Open the phone’s Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Google Pixel Watch.
  3. Tap Update if an update is offered.
  4. Reopen the Pixel Watch app and retry Watch faces > the design > Use on watch.

Update watch apps

  1. Open Play Store on the watch.
  2. Tap Manage apps.
  3. Tap Update All.
  4. Wait for installations to finish before checking the face list again.

Check watch system software

  1. Open the watch’s Settings.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap System updates.
  4. Install any offered update and allow the watch to restart if requested.

Google’s general update guidance says an app or system update typically completes in under an hour, but that is an update expectation, not a face-sync guarantee. Keep the watch connected to the internet while updates and app data are downloading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update Google Photos for a Photos face

A face that displays personal pictures has an additional dependency. Update Google Photos on both the phone and the watch. If Photos is missing from the watch, update the watch apps first and then try adding the Photos face again. Google says a Photos watch face can use up to 30 personal photos; that limit concerns the face’s photo selection, not whether the face will appear in the carousel.

Verify internet and pairing conditions

The watch needs an active internet connection for app data to update. A phone may show the face in its catalogue while the watch is offline or only partially connected.

  • Confirm the watch is still paired in the Pixel Watch app.
  • Check that Wi-Fi or the watch’s supported mobile connection is active.
  • Keep Bluetooth enabled on the phone during the transfer.
  • Open the Play Store on the watch to see whether it can load its app pages; inability to load them points to connectivity rather than a face-selection error.

If other watch apps update normally but one face does not, move on to compatibility. If several apps, tiles, or sync functions fail together, resolve the connection and update issues before retrying the face.

  • Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]

Do not spend money on a new band, charger, screen protector, or another physical accessory to solve this symptom. The supported fixes concern software, connectivity, and availability. A different face can be a practical replacement only when it is offered in the Play Store for the watch.

Check compatibility and whether the face is still available

Older faces are not guaranteed to work on a newer Pixel Watch. Google’s Wear OS Help explains that some faces no longer transfer or install on a new watch. In the Play Store, only faces compatible with the current device are displayed as available to download:

“When browsing watch faces in the Google Play Store, only watch faces compatible with your device will be displayed and available to download.”

Use the device-specific Play Store listing

  1. Open the Play Store on the phone or watch.
  2. Search for the face by its exact name.
  3. Check whether the listing identifies your connected Pixel Watch as a supported device and offers an install or use action.
  4. If the face is absent, unavailable, or marked incompatible, select a face that is offered for that watch instead.

Availability can change when a developer retires a design or when a face fails current quality or compatibility requirements. In that situation, repeating the transfer will not restore it. A replacement should be another face available through the Play Store for the specific watch, not an unofficial download intended to bypass device checks.

Compatibility is also distinct from a temporary sync delay. A face that is listed for the device but not yet visible may still be transferring; a face that is not listed for the device has an availability problem to solve first.

Follow the right branch for your case

The app shows the face, but the watch does not

  1. Tap Use on watch again from the face’s page.
  2. Touch and hold the watch’s current face and inspect the carousel.
  3. Check the face-management controls for a hidden entry.
  4. If the watch was recently transferred or restored, leave it connected and allow synchronization to finish.
  5. Install pending phone, watch, and face-related app updates.

These checks address an unapplied selection, a hidden entry, and an incomplete transfer without removing the watch’s other data.

The face vanished after moving to a new watch

Complete the transfer on the charger as directed, update the watch, and search the Play Store for the face for that exact device. A previous installation does not establish that the face remains supported on the new model. If it is no longer offered, choose a currently compatible face.

The face cannot be found anywhere in the store

Check the spelling and search from the watch’s or connected account’s Play Store. If no compatible listing appears, the design may have been removed or may not meet the requirements for that watch. There is no supported Pixel Watch setting that can force an unavailable face onto the device.

A Photos face is the only one failing

Update Google Photos on the phone and watch, then update all watch apps. Reopen the Pixel Watch app and try the Photos face again. This branch is different from a general face-transfer problem because the face depends on the Photos app on both devices.

Several apps and synchronization features are failing

Check internet access first, then update the Pixel Watch app, watch apps, and watch system software. A broad connectivity or software problem can block face data along with other app data. Once those functions work, retry the face-specific steps.

A complete no-reset checklist

Work through these checks in order and stop when the face appears:

  1. In the Pixel Watch app, open Watch faces and tap Use on watch.
  2. On the watch, touch and hold the current face and swipe across the carousel.
  3. Open face-management controls and unhide the design if it is listed there.
  4. Confirm the phone still shows the watch as paired and keep Bluetooth enabled.
  5. Confirm the watch can reach the internet by opening its Play Store.
  6. If the watch was transferred or restored, keep it charging and allow the transfer to complete.
  7. Update the Pixel Watch app from the phone’s Play Store.
  8. On the watch, use Play Store > Manage apps > Update All.
  9. Check Settings > System > System updates.
  10. Search the Play Store for the exact face and verify that it is offered for this watch.

After an update or transfer, return to the app and apply the face once more. Reapplying is useful after the watch’s software has caught up, but it cannot make a discontinued or incompatible face available.

What not to do for one missing face

  • Do not factory-reset immediately. The face-specific guidance prioritizes application, visibility, transfer synchronization, updates, and compatibility. A reset erases local settings and creates additional setup work without proving that the face is supported.
  • Do not treat the phone preview as proof of installation. The watch still needs to receive the face and include it in its available-face list.
  • Do not use an unofficial package to bypass compatibility. If the Play Store does not offer the face for the device, use a supported alternative.
  • Do not confuse update time with sync time. Google gives general expectations for updates and backups, but no fixed duration for watch-face synchronization.
  • Do not repeatedly interrupt a restore. Turning off the watch or leaving the charger during a transfer can leave apps, faces, tiles, or settings incomplete.

When to seek broader Pixel Watch support

Escalate only after the face-specific checks are complete and the problem extends beyond one design. Pairing failures, repeated app crashes, a watch that is frozen, or a Play Store that cannot load any content indicate a wider watch or account issue. Use Google’s troubleshooting guidance for that broader symptom rather than applying reset instructions solely because one face is missing.

For the narrow case described here, keep the watch paired and online, apply the face through the Pixel Watch app, inspect hidden faces, allow transfer synchronization, update both devices, and verify Play Store compatibility. Those checks distinguish a selection problem from a delayed transfer or a face that is no longer available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the watch face visible in the Pixel Watch app but not on the watch?

The design may not have been applied, may be hidden from the watch’s face carousel, or may still be syncing after a transfer. Tap Use on watch, inspect the watch’s face-management controls, and keep the watch paired and online while synchronization completes.

How long should Pixel Watch face syncing take?

Google says faces may take some time to sync after Watch Transfer, but it does not publish a fixed duration. Do not rely on a precise minute-or-hour deadline. If the watch is fully set up and the face still does not appear, check updates and compatibility.

Can an old watch face be moved to a new Pixel Watch?

Not always. Google says some older faces no longer transfer or install on a new watch. Search the Play Store for the face with the new watch selected; only a compatible, still-available listing can be installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a Google Photos watch face is missing?

Update Google Photos on both the phone and watch, then use the watch’s Play Store to update all apps. Reopen the Pixel Watch app and try the Photos face again. A Photos face can use up to 30 personal photos.

Will a factory reset fix one missing watch face?

A reset is not the recommended first response. It erases local settings and adds setup work, while the likely causes are an unapplied or hidden face, delayed transfer, outdated software, or incompatibility. Consider broader support only when pairing, app, or watch functions are also failing.

Do I need to buy a new accessory to make a face appear?

No. A band, charger, screen protector, or replacement watch is not a software fix for face selection. Use the Pixel Watch app, watch connectivity, updates, and the device-specific Play Store listing.

The Bottom Line

Tap Use on watch in the Pixel Watch app, inspect the watch’s face carousel and hidden entries, and allow a recent transfer to finish. Then update the phone app, watch apps, system software, and Google Photos when relevant. If the face still is not offered for that specific Pixel Watch in the Play Store, it is unavailable or incompatible—not a problem a reset or accessory can solve.
