A logo can make a QR code stop scanning because it covers encoded squares, weakens the contrast between light and dark areas, or obscures patterns scanners use to locate the code. Error correction can recover some damage, but it cannot guarantee that a logo-covered code will work. Keep the logo modest, preserve the code’s clear margin and corner markers, and test the finished design at its actual size.
Why won’t my QR code scan after I added a logo?
A QR code carries data in its pattern of light and dark modules. When an image sits on top of that pattern, it hides or distorts some of the information a scanner needs. DENSO WAVE explains that placing letters or pictures over a code can make the contrast between its bright and dark areas indistinct. A covered section may also trigger error correction, which attempts to reconstruct missing data—but recovery has limits.
The logo can cause problems beyond the data it covers. A QR code needs clearly distinguishable modules, locating patterns, and an adequate blank border, called the quiet zone. Distorted modules, poor contrast, or an insufficient margin can make a code difficult or impossible to read. GS1 also cautions that a logo may interfere with locating features or error-correction modules, increasing the chance of decoding failure.
How big can a logo be in the middle of a QR code?
There is no universal safe logo size or percentage of the code that can be covered. The result depends on the code and its output, and the logo’s position matters as well as its area. A larger image covering more of the code makes successful scanning less likely; even a small smeared or missing section can slow reading or prevent it.

Rather than relying on a fixed percentage, reduce the logo, regenerate the QR code, and test the new version. Keep it away from the three large corner finder patterns, which help scanners locate the symbol. Preserve the quiet zone around the outside; do not let the logo or other design elements intrude into it.
What to check when you redesign the QR code
- Contrast: Keep the light and dark modules easy to tell apart. Avoid colors or effects that make them blend together.
- Module clarity: Do not stretch or resize the finished image in a way that blurs its individual squares. DENSO WAVE recommends modules made of four or more dots for stable operation; the practical size depends on the output and printer resolution, so this is a recommendation, not a guarantee.
- Printed or displayed size: Use a larger code where possible. Larger modules make a QR code more stable and easier for a scanner to read, according to DENSO WAVE.
- Clear space: Keep the quiet zone around the symbol unobstructed, in addition to leaving the corner finder patterns clear.
How to test the final QR code
- Test the actual output. Scan the code at the size it will appear, whether on a screen or in print. A preview at a larger size does not establish that the final version will work.
- Try the devices that matter. Test with the kinds of phones or scanning equipment your intended audience will use. GS1 notes that consumer-device and retail-supply-chain scanners can differ, so success on one phone does not prove reliable scanning elsewhere.
- Repeat after every design change. If you reduce or reposition the logo, regenerate the QR code and test that final version again. Changing the artwork can change whether the code decodes.
For repeated operational checks, a dedicated QR-capable 2D scanner is an option. DENSO WAVE says its QK30 can read QR codes displayed on LCD screens and printed on paper. A scanner can help validate an output; it cannot repair a code whose logo or design has made it unreadable.
