The company at the center of the story is probably Shanghai Aishengna Electronic Technology Group, a Chinese state-owned organization leading an effort to build immersion deep-ultraviolet (DUV) lithography tools. That makes it a chipmaking-equipment company—not a chipmaker in the usual sense. Reuters reported on July 28, 2026, that the news was followed by an approximately 10% two-day drop in ASML shares, wiping more than €60 billion from the Dutch equipment maker’s market value. The evidence does not show that Aishengna caused a broad global stock-market crash.
What happened
Reuters, in a report syndicated by Investing.com on July 28, 2026, described Shanghai Aishengna Electronic Technology Group as leading China’s push to mass-produce immersion DUV lithography systems. The report said the disclosure was initially reported by The Information. Investors reacted sharply: ASML shares fell about 10% over two trading days, and Reuters said more than €60 billion in market value was erased.
Those figures describe a specific repricing of ASML, not proof of a generalized global equity rout. The report also did not establish that Aishengna had already delivered commercially qualified machines. It described production plans and investor concern about future competition.

Why a lithography-equipment project matters
Lithography systems project patterns onto silicon wafers and are among the most strategically important tools in a semiconductor factory. A domestic Chinese source of such equipment could reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and lessen the practical impact of export controls over time.
#1 Best Overall
Immersion DUV uses a liquid layer between the final lens and wafer to improve resolution. It is widely used for many chip layers, but it is not the same technology as extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, which is required for the most advanced production. Reuters said China could not then make or obtain the most advanced EUV systems. A DUV effort therefore does not demonstrate EUV capability or parity with the leading edge.
Planned output versus established shipments
The reported Chinese numbers are forward-looking plans attributed by Reuters to The Information. ASML’s figure is a completed shipment total reported by Reuters, so the comparison should not be read as a like-for-like production result.
| Measure | Shanghai Aishengna effort | ASML |
|---|---|---|
| Technology discussed | Immersion DUV | Immersion systems in the cited shipment figure; ASML also supplies EUV, but EUV is not part of the Chinese plan described here |
| 2026 volume | Five tools planned, according to Reuters’ account of The Information | Not stated in the cited report |
| 2027 volume | 20 tools planned, according to Reuters’ account of The Information | Not stated in the cited report |
| 2025 volume | No completed shipment total established | 131 immersion systems shipped, according to the ASML figure reported by Reuters |
| Evidence status | Reported production targets; deliveries, uptime, yield, customer qualification and commercial competitiveness were not verified in the account | Established shipment history for the cited 2025 total |
Even if the plans were met, five systems in 2026 and 20 in 2027 would be modest beside 131 immersion systems shipped by ASML in 2025. The market reaction was therefore about the possibility of a future strategic competitor and the durability of export controls, not evidence that the Chinese project had already matched ASML’s scale.

- It does show: investors considered the reported effort material enough to reduce ASML’s expected long-term advantage, at least temporarily.
- It does not show: that Aishengna had a qualified commercial product, that China had solved EUV, or that one company triggered a worldwide market crash.
- It also does not establish: actual customer deliveries, manufacturing yield, system reliability, or pricing competitiveness.
Semiconductor-equipment valuations reflect expectations years ahead. A small pilot program can matter to investors if it suggests that a technology barrier may eventually weaken, even when current output is far below the incumbent’s shipment base.

Do not confuse this story with CXMT
ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) is a separate Chinese DRAM company. A July 29, 2026 explainer about CXMT’s stock debut concerns memory-chip manufacturing and is not the lithography-equipment account involving Shanghai Aishengna. Treating the two stories as one would combine unrelated companies, technologies and market events.

The available account does not verify whether Aishengna’s systems have entered volume production, passed customer acceptance tests or achieved competitive wafer throughput and defect performance. It also does not establish how many tools, if any, were delivered by the date of publication. Those gaps matter because laboratory capability, a prototype and a dependable factory tool are different milestones.
The most defensible reading is narrower than the headline: a reported Chinese DUV-equipment program exposed a strategic vulnerability investors associate with ASML and coincided with a sharp fall in ASML’s shares. It was an important signal about technology competition, not proof of a completed Chinese breakthrough or a literal global stock rout.
