A token can have billions of units in its total supply while only a fraction is circulating or readily available to the public. Total supply counts tokens that have been issued under a provider’s methodology, including units that are locked, vested, reserved, held by insiders, or kept in a treasury. Even an unlocked token may remain in a stakeholder wallet rather than appear on an exchange or in a sell order.
The practical answer is to inspect three separate things: how the data provider defines each supply figure, which wallets it excludes, and the dated schedule for future releases. An unlock indicates that tokens may be claimed or transferred; it does not prove that recipients will sell them or that the market will experience a predictable price move.
Total supply is an accounting number, not a sales inventory
“Total supply” answers a narrow question: how many tokens currently exist according to a stated calculation. CoinMarketCap’s methodology, for example, defines total supply as minted tokens minus verifiable burns and includes both locked and unlocked tokens. A token held in a vesting contract, a foundation treasury, an investor wallet, or a team wallet can therefore be part of total supply even though it is not available to ordinary buyers.

It refers to tokens that a holder is actually offering, whether through an exchange order book, an over-the-counter transaction, a liquidity pool, or another trading venue. Supply statistics do not reveal executable sell orders, the willingness of holders to sell, or available market depth. A large total-supply figure cannot be read as a promise that the same number of units is entering the market.

There is also no universal classification rule. Data providers investigate contracts, wallets, lockups, burns, and project disclosures, then apply their own methodology. Two reputable providers can publish different circulating figures for the same token because they classify treasury, ecosystem, strategic, team, or investor holdings differently.
What each supply term actually means

The distinction between potentially transferable and actually circulating is the point most supply dashboards compress into a single headline number.
How circulating-supply estimates are built
Providers usually begin with on-chain issuance and burn data, then identify holdings that are not considered public circulation. CoinGecko’s methodology gives the clearest illustration: if a project has 1,000,000 total tokens and 400,000 sit in identified uncirculated wallets, the example circulating supply is 600,000. The 600,000 is an illustration of the method, not a market statistic.

Those exclusions can include allocations assigned to a team, investors, marketing reserves, a foundation, an ecosystem program, a treasury, escrow, or another strategic purpose. The exact treatment depends on evidence about wallet ownership, transfer restrictions, contractual terms, and the provider’s policy. CoinMarketCap similarly considers whether tokens are locked, held by insiders, or otherwise not sellable on the public market.
Because the result is an estimate, it can change without any new tokens being minted. A provider may reclassify a wallet after receiving project documentation, discover that a lock has expired, verify a burn, or revise its treatment of an allocation. Always read the methodology and the “as of” date alongside the number.

Why unlocked tokens can still be outside circulation
An unlock changes a restriction; it does not dictate a holder’s next action. Tokenomist explicitly distinguishes unlocked tokens from circulating supply because claimable units can remain in stakeholder wallets. A team member may leave tokens untouched, a foundation may retain them for grants, and a governance-controlled treasury may wait for a vote before distributing them.
In practice, at least four steps can separate an unlock from a public sale:
- Eligibility: The vesting contract reaches the date at which a recipient may claim.
- Claim: The recipient calls the contract and moves the tokens into a wallet, or leaves them claimable.
- Transfer or distribution: The holder sends tokens to another wallet, a treasury, a grant recipient, a liquidity pool, or an exchange.
- Trade: A buyer and seller execute a transaction at an available price.
Only the final step is an actual sale. The first three can occur without a sale, and none is automatic unless the contract specifies automatic transfers.
What a vesting schedule tells you—and what it cannot tell you
Cliff unlocks
A cliff releases a defined portion at one date. It can create a visible change in the amount recipients are allowed to claim, but the schedule does not reveal whether recipients will hold, stake, distribute, or sell those tokens. The size should be read together with the recipient category and the project’s distribution rules.
Linear and periodic vesting
Linear vesting releases tokens continuously or at regular intervals over a period. Periodic schedules release portions at recurring dates. These patterns spread potential availability over time, yet they still do not establish trading volume or direction. A gradual release can be economically important without producing a single, identifiable sell event.

Governance-controlled distribution
Some unlocked allocations remain under a foundation, DAO, or other governance process. A schedule may show that tokens are eligible for distribution while a separate decision determines when they leave the treasury and who receives them. That discretion is a reason to treat the schedule as a supply-availability input rather than a forecast.

A practical method for reading a token’s supply dashboard
- Record the definition and date. Write down whether the displayed number is total, circulating, unlocked, or maximum supply, which provider published it, and the date of the snapshot. Do not compare a current estimate with an older project statement as if they were simultaneous.
- Find the excluded wallets. Check whether team, investor, foundation, ecosystem, marketing-reserve, treasury, escrow, or buyback holdings are counted. Look for the provider’s explanation of why each category is included or excluded.
- Calculate the gap. Compare circulating supply with total supply, and separately with maximum supply when a finite cap exists. The gap indicates how much is not classified as circulating; it does not measure how much is waiting in exchange sell orders.
- Map the calendar. Note each release date, amount, recipient category, and schedule type—cliff, linear, or periodic. A large percentage released to a foundation is a different situation from the same percentage released to many individual users.
- Check transfer mechanics. Read the vesting contract or project documentation to see whether tokens are claimable, automatically transferred, subject to a governance vote, or still restricted by another condition.
- Verify movements on-chain. If you need a project-specific view, inspect the relevant contract events and wallet balances for claims, transfers, treasury distributions, and exchange deposits. A transfer to an exchange is evidence of movement, not proof that a completed sale occurred.
- Separate availability from behavior. Label your conclusion precisely: “eligible to unlock,” “unlocked,” “transferred,” “deposited,” or “sold.” Do not replace one verb with another.
A worked numerical example
Suppose a token reports 1,000,000 total units. Under a provider’s wallet analysis, 400,000 are identified as team, marketing-reserve, and investor holdings that are not treated as public circulation. The provider’s illustrative circulating figure would be 600,000.

Nothing in this arithmetic says that 600,000 units are listed for sale. Some may be held by long-term users, staked, deposited in a liquidity pool, or simply inactive. Conversely, a holder of part of the 400,000 may be able to transfer tokens after an unlock even though the provider has not yet classified the wallet as circulating.
A dated project example: Arbitrum’s ARB figures
The Arbitrum Foundation reported that its calculation produced 1.537 billion ARB in circulating supply as of March 7, 2024. Its table gave a rounded total of 2,653,939,384 and warned that the estimate could change with treasury distributions or vesting. The difference between those figures illustrates why a project can report a substantial total while a smaller amount is classified as circulating.
Those numbers are project-specific and dated; they are not current October 2026 balances. They also do not establish how many ARB holders offered for sale on that date. For a current assessment, use a current project statement, wallet balances, contract terms, and market data rather than carrying the 2024 figures forward.

Why an unlock does not automatically predict price movement
An unlock increases potential availability for a defined allocation. Price impact depends on what recipients do, how much demand exists, the liquidity of the market, and whether transfers are spread over time. The reviewed evidence does not provide a general empirical statistic showing that a particular percentage unlock causes a fixed amount of selling or a predictable price change.
Several outcomes are possible after an unlock:
- Recipients may hold the tokens, stake them, or use them in the project.
- A foundation may distribute them through grants or liquidity programs rather than sell them.
- Tokens may move between wallets without reaching an exchange.
- Some recipients may sell immediately, while others sell gradually or hedge elsewhere.
- Market participants may anticipate the event before the date, making the eventual transfer less informative than the schedule alone suggests.
These are scenarios, not a forecast. A responsible analysis states what the schedule makes possible and then verifies actual wallet and market behavior.

Common mistakes and the precise correction
“Total supply equals the amount investors can buy.”
Correction: Total supply includes restricted and strategic holdings. Check circulating supply and the provider’s exclusions.
“Unlocked means circulating.”
Correction: Unlocked means no longer locked. Tokens can remain claimable or sit in a stakeholder wallet.

“The unlock date proves a sell-off.”
Correction: The date proves only that an allocation may become available under its terms. Confirm claims, transfers, exchange deposits, and completed trades separately.
“A circulating figure is an exchange balance.”
Correction: Circulating supply is a methodology-based estimate of public circulation, not a count of orders or market depth.
“A project’s old supply statement is still current.”
Correction: Supply changes through vesting, burns, treasury distributions, reclassification, and revised disclosures. Attach every figure to its date.

For a serious project-level assessment, assemble four dated records:
- The provider methodology and current circulating, total, unlocked, and maximum figures.
- The project’s token-allocation and vesting documents, including cliff and linear periods.
- On-chain contract events and balances for claims, burns, treasury transfers, and exchange deposits.
- Market data showing where trading occurs and whether observed transfers became executed trades.
If any record is missing, narrow the claim. You can say that tokens are eligible to unlock, but not that they entered circulation; you can identify a transfer, but not that it was sold; and you can report a provider estimate, but not present it as a complete count of public orders.
The bottom line
A large token supply does not mean all tokens are for sale because “total,” “circulating,” “unlocked,” and “listed for sale” describe different states. Total supply may include locked, vested, reserved, insider, and treasury holdings. Circulating supply is an estimate shaped by provider methodology. Unlocked tokens may remain in stakeholder wallets, and a vesting schedule describes when availability can change—not what recipients will do next. Read the definitions, wallet classifications, dated release calendar, governance controls, and on-chain movements together before drawing a conclusion about market supply.
