A high refresh-rate setting does not guarantee smooth motion: Windows may be using a lower rate, a game may deliver frames unevenly, synchronization may be mismatched, or the monitor may be producing motion artifacts. Start by checking the active refresh rate for the resolution you want, then troubleshoot the symptom where it occurs—desktop, game, or video playback.

First identify what looks choppy

Notice when the problem occurs. Choppy pointer or window movement points you toward the active display mode. Stutter limited to one game suggests frame delivery or synchronization. Video that stalls only while another display is connected calls for a multi-monitor test. Blurring or bright and dark trails around moving objects may be a panel response setting rather than a refresh-rate problem.

Change one setting or component at a time. If the symptom changes, you have a stronger clue about which part of the display chain is involved.

Check the refresh rate Windows is actually using

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Select the display you are troubleshooting and read its current refresh rate and VRR status.
  3. Choose the highest refresh rate offered at the resolution you intend to use.

A monitor’s advertised maximum and its active mode are not necessarily the same. Windows marks refresh-rate options that do not support the current resolution with an asterisk, so do not assume a high rate and a particular resolution are available together. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing a monitor’s refresh rate.

If a game seems capped lower on Windows 11

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) requires a VRR-capable display and at least 120 Hz. Microsoft notes that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games. If a particular game appears capped lower than expected, switch DRR off as a test, then check the game again. DRR details and the setting are covered in Microsoft’s refresh-rate guidance.

Check whether a game is delivering frames steadily

A 144 Hz or 240 Hz display can refresh rapidly, but it cannot make the graphics card finish each frame on time. A game may run below the display rate or deliver frames at uneven intervals, which can feel choppy even when Windows reports the expected refresh rate.

  • Temporarily lower graphics settings and see whether motion becomes steadier. This is a diagnostic test, not proof that the monitor is faulty.
  • Check the game’s own frame-rate limit and synchronization options before changing global driver settings.
  • Compare the symptom in the same scene or activity after each change.

Understand the V-Sync tradeoff

Fixed-rate V-Sync can reduce tearing, but missed refresh deadlines may cause stutter. NVIDIA explains that when frame rate falls below the V-Sync cap, it can drop to a lower fraction of the monitor’s refresh rate. Turning V-Sync off may avoid that behavior, but frames delivered above the display rate can tear. The result depends on the game and its frame delivery; neither setting is a universal fix. See NVIDIA’s Adaptive VSync explanation.

Enable variable refresh rate if your setup supports it

Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display synchronize its refresh with the graphics card’s changing frame output. It can help reduce tearing and stutter, but both the display and GPU must support a compatible implementation, and setup varies by monitor, connection, operating system, and application.

NVIDIA G-SYNC

In NVIDIA Control Panel, enable G-SYNC and select the appropriate display and full-screen or windowed option for how you play. Confirm the correct display and Monitor Technology options. Compatibility depends on the GPU generation, display, application, and operating system. Consult NVIDIA’s G-SYNC compatibility information for supported combinations.

AMD FreeSync

In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, check the FreeSync control and confirm that FreeSync is enabled for the display. AMD’s support guidance distinguishes FreeSync tiers: its FreeSync Premium tier specifies a minimum of 120 Hz at FHD and low-framerate compensation. Those features should not be assumed for every monitor; check the exact model’s certification and supported port. See AMD’s FreeSync setup FAQ (last updated March 3, 2025).

  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

VRR is intended to let a gaming source deliver frames as they are ready rather than forcing output to a fixed refresh schedule. Its actual behavior depends on supported devices and their VRR range; the feature name alone does not establish that every resolution, port, or application is covered. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes the purpose of HDMI VRR in its HDMI VRR overview.

Test multi-monitor video playback separately

If streaming or other video playback stalls only when another monitor is attached, temporarily set the displays to matching refresh rates and test again. Microsoft documents that different refresh rates across multiple monitors can cause video playback to malfunction, including displays connected physically or through Miracast. This is a targeted test for Windows video playback, not a general explanation for game stutter. See Microsoft’s Windows video playback troubleshooting guidance.

Isolate the cable, port, adapter, or dock

Use this branch if the expected display mode is missing, the screen blanks, or the behavior changes when you move or replace equipment. A signal path includes the source port, display port, resolution and refresh mode, any adapter or dock, and the cable; every part must support the chosen mode.

  1. Connect the PC directly to the monitor, bypassing docks, dongles, and adapters.
  2. Reseat both ends of the cable.
  3. Try another known-good cable and a different output port, if available.
  4. If possible, test the monitor with another computer. Note whether the fault follows the display, source, port, or cable.

Microsoft recommends trying another cable or system when troubleshooting an external monitor. If the issue began after a display-driver update, its guidance also includes rolling back or reinstalling the driver. Follow Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting steps.

Choose an HDMI cable for the whole signal path

HDMI cable categories describe bandwidth capability, not a guaranteed refresh rate independent of resolution, color format, and the capabilities of the source and display ports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
HDMI cable category Maximum bandwidth listed by HDMI Licensing Administrator
High Speed HDMI Up to 10.2 Gbps
Premium High Speed HDMI Up to 18 Gbps
Ultra High Speed HDMI Up to 48 Gbps

These figures come from HDMI Licensing Administrator’s cable overview; its Ultra High Speed cable specification also lists up to 48 Gbps. Look for the certified cable label, and check that both devices and the selected mode need the category. Replacing a cable can help isolate a faulty or insufficient link; it will not correct uneven game frame delivery, a lower Windows setting, unsupported device ports, or monitor response artifacts.

Adjust monitor response or overdrive if motion has trails

If the refresh setting, frame delivery, and signal path appear correct but moving objects look smeared or show bright or dark trails, inspect the monitor’s response-time or overdrive setting in its on-screen menu. Try a moderate level—often called “Normal”—and change one level at a time. Excessive overdrive can create distracting artifacts. The suitable setting is model-specific; NVIDIA’s frame-pacing guidance recommends starting moderately rather than assuming the most aggressive setting is best.

Match the symptom to the next test

  • Desktop motion looks slow: verify the selected display and active refresh rate in Advanced display.
  • One game stutters: check frame delivery, the game’s frame limit, and synchronization; then test compatible VRR.
  • Video playback stalls with another display attached: match the display refresh rates temporarily.
  • A mode is missing or the image blanks: simplify the connection and test cable, port, adapter, dock, and display separately.
  • Motion looks smeared or has trails: test a moderate monitor overdrive setting.
