Free localhost.run tunnels are useful for exposing a development app, but their regularly changing hostnames and speed limit make them a poor default for a production webhook endpoint that needs a stable address. A tunnel only provides a path to your receiver; your application still needs to handle signature checks, retries, duplicate events, and processing timeouts.
Why localhost.run works well for development
localhost.run exposes a local application through an SSH tunnel, without requiring a separate client download for its basic workflow. That makes it convenient when you need to let a webhook provider reach an app running on your development machine—for example, while testing how your code handles an event.

That convenience is a development fit, not proof that a tunnel is a complete production webhook service. A development machine can be temporary or offline, and the tunnel is only one part of the route between the sender and your application.
What the free localhost.run service documents
localhost.run says free tunnels have domain names that change regularly and a speed limit. Its documentation says those limits do not apply to its custom-domain plans. The changing free hostname is a practical obstacle when a provider’s webhook configuration expects a stable endpoint. A speed limit may also make a free tunnel a poor production default; the documentation does not establish a particular production performance result or outage.

The security and availability questions are separate. localhost.run documents encrypted SSH tunnels and HTTPS endpoints for HTTP tunnels. Encryption helps protect traffic in transit, but it does not make a changing hostname stable or establish that the receiver will be continuously available.
Production webhooks need more than a reachable URL
Webhook delivery is not necessarily a single, ordered request. Stripe’s documentation, for example, says live-mode deliveries are retried for up to three days with exponential backoff. It also says event order is not guaranteed and duplicate deliveries can occur. Stripe documents three retries over a few hours for sandbox deliveries. These are Stripe-specific behaviors, not universal webhook rules.
Those delivery behaviors make receiver design essential regardless of which ingress option you use:

- Verify authenticity: Stripe recommends validating the signature against the raw request body.
- Acknowledge promptly: Return a 2xx response before complex work, then process the event asynchronously.
- Handle repeats: Deduplicate using event IDs so a retry does not repeat a business action.
- Do not assume order: Make processing robust when related events arrive in a different sequence.
As Stripe puts it, “Configure your handler to process incoming events with an asynchronous queue.” A tunnel does not provide that application-side queue or guarantee your event-processing behavior.

Choose ingress for where the receiver runs
The right replacement depends on whether the endpoint is for development or production, where the receiver runs, and which reliability controls you need. These options address different layers; none should be assumed to solve application-side retries, deduplication, or ordering by itself.

When to leave a tunnel in the development loop
A local tunnel remains appropriate when the goal is to test a webhook handler on a developer machine. Use request inspection and replay to diagnose payload handling, and keep the endpoint temporary rather than treating the development path as the production architecture.
For a production receiver, choose an ingress route with a hostname and availability design suited to the service, then separately implement signature verification, fast acknowledgements, asynchronous work, and duplicate-safe processing. If using a localhost.run custom-domain plan, its documented hostname and speed distinctions address two constraints of the free tier; they should not be mistaken for documented queueing or end-to-end webhook guarantees.
