If a free Kindle book is missing, first determine where it is missing: the Kindle app or e-reader, the library view, or your Amazon account. Connect the device, run a manual sync, remove library filters, and search again. If the title appears in Manage Your Content and Devices, deliver it to the intended device and sync once more. If it is absent there too, check Digital Orders for an incomplete order. Restarting and updating a Kindle e-reader are later steps, not the first solution.

Find the exact place where the book is missing

“Not in my library” can describe three different problems. The correct fix depends on which one you have:

What you can see Most likely next step
The title is listed in Manage Your Content and Devices, but not on the Kindle app or e-reader Choose the device under Deliver or remove from device, select Make Changes, then sync the device.
The title is in the account or library but hidden from the current shelf Open Library, select All, clear filters, refresh, and search for the title. Sorting by Recent can help locate a newly added item.
The title is not listed in Manage Your Content and Devices Open Digital Orders and check whether the order is complete. If it is incomplete, follow Amazon’s option to retry it or change the payment method.

A free price does not identify the cause by itself. The same account, connection, synchronization, delivery, and order-status checks apply; Amazon’s official guidance does not name one universal cause specific to free books.

1. Check the internet connection before troubleshooting the library

The Kindle app and a Kindle e-reader need an internet connection to acquire, download, and synchronize Kindle content. A title cannot appear on a device that has not successfully contacted the account.

Amazon Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) - Light and compact, with fast page turns, and high contrast ratio - Matcha
  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
  • Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

On a phone or tablet

  • Open the device’s Wi-Fi controls and confirm that it is connected to a working network.
  • Make sure Airplane mode is off. Airplane mode can leave the Kindle app open while preventing it from reaching Amazon.
  • If the connection was just restored, leave the Kindle app open long enough to attempt a sync rather than immediately judging the library.

On a Kindle e-reader

  • Open the e-reader’s wireless controls and confirm that Wi-Fi is on and connected.
  • Check that Airplane mode is off.
  • If the device reports a connection problem, fix that before trying to deliver the book or repeat the library search.

Do not treat a visible Wi-Fi symbol as proof that the book has already synchronized. The useful test is whether a manual sync completes and the library then updates.

2. Run a manual Kindle sync

Automatic synchronization may not have happened yet, or it may have been interrupted. Run the command appropriate to your device and wait for it to finish before checking the title again.

Kindle app on iOS or Android

  1. Open the Kindle app.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Select Sync or Sync now, depending on the app label shown on your device.
  4. Wait for the operation to complete. In Amazon’s mobile-app guidance, the last-synced date and time updates when synchronization has completed.
  5. Return to Library and search for the book.

Kindle e-reader

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items, depending on the e-reader’s wording.
  3. Keep the Kindle connected while the sync runs.
  4. After it finishes, return to the library and look for the title.

Amazon’s instructions say to wait for synchronization to complete; they do not promise a fixed number of minutes or hours for delivery. If the command finishes but nothing changes, continue with the account and library checks below instead of repeatedly tapping sync without verifying where the title is recorded.

3. Make sure the library view is not hiding the book

A book can be present in the account but absent from the shelf you are currently viewing. Filters, collections, and sorting choices change what is displayed without removing the title from your account.

Amazon Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) – Light and compact, with fast page turns, and high contrast ratio – Black
  • Take your library with you - 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
  1. Open the Kindle app’s Library section, or open the library on the e-reader.
  2. Select All rather than a filtered category or collection.
  3. Clear any active filters.
  4. Refresh the view after the manual sync.
  5. Use the library search and enter the title. Search by a distinctive word if the complete title is uncertain.
  6. If the library supports sorting, select Recent so a newly delivered item is brought toward the top.

If the book appears after selecting All or clearing a filter, the delivery was not the problem; the previous shelf view was. You can restore your preferred collection or sort after confirming that the title is present.

4. Deliver a title that is in your Amazon account

When the title is listed in Amazon’s content management page but not on the device, send it to the intended Kindle app or e-reader from the account side.

  1. Open Manage Your Content and Devices.
  2. Choose Content.
  3. Choose Books.
  4. Find the free Kindle title in the list. Use the page’s search or sorting controls if there are many books.
  5. Select Deliver or remove from device.
  6. Choose the intended Kindle e-reader or the device associated with the Kindle app.
  7. Select Make Changes.
  8. On the target device, reconnect to Wi-Fi if necessary and run the appropriate manual sync described above.

This procedure assumes that the book is actually listed under the account’s books. Selecting a different device will not make the title appear on the device you are holding, so check the target name carefully before choosing Make Changes.

When the app and e-reader use different accounts

Delivery follows the Amazon account that owns the content. If a title appears in one account’s content list but the app or e-reader is registered to another, syncing the second account will not bring it over. Verify that the device is using the account in which you found the book before repeating delivery.

5. If the title is absent from content management, check Digital Orders

If a search of Manage Your Content and Devices > Content > Books finds nothing, move the investigation to the order record. This is a different branch from a device-only visibility problem.

  1. Open Digital Orders in the Amazon account.
  2. Locate the order associated with the title you expected to receive.
  3. Check whether the order is marked complete.
  4. If Amazon shows it as incomplete, use the available option to retry the order or change the payment method.
  5. After the order is completed, return to Manage Your Content and Devices and look under Content and Books.
  6. Once the title appears there, deliver it to the target device and sync.

This check does not mean that every free-book problem is a payment problem. It is the appropriate check specifically when the title is missing from the account’s content list. An incomplete digital order must be resolved before there is account content to deliver.

6. Perform Kindle e-reader maintenance only after account and sync checks

For a physical Kindle e-reader, restart and software maintenance are later troubleshooting steps. They cannot substitute for an incomplete order or a title that has never been delivered to the device.

Restart the e-reader

  • Keep the Kindle charged while you restart it.
  • Use the device’s restart command, then allow it to boot fully.
  • Reconnect to Wi-Fi if needed and choose Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items again.

Check for current device software

  • Open the Kindle’s settings and check whether a software update is available.
  • Install an available update according to the on-screen instructions, keeping the device powered as directed.
  • After the update completes, reconnect and sync before checking the library.

These steps apply to a Kindle e-reader. If the problem occurs only in the mobile app, start with the app’s connection, library view, and More > Sync now path instead.

Common mistakes that make a free book seem lost

Looking only in a collection

A collection or category is narrower than the complete library. Always test the All view and clear filters before concluding that the title was not acquired.

Syncing while offline

The sync command can be selected even when the device has no usable internet connection. Check Wi-Fi and Airplane mode first; otherwise the account and device cannot exchange the updated library information.

Delivering to the wrong device

Amazon can list several e-readers and app devices. The delivery menu requires you to choose one. A successful delivery to another registered device will not place the book on the device you are checking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Searching Digital Orders before checking the account list

Order status is most useful when the title is absent from Manage Your Content and Devices. If it is already listed there, delivery and synchronization are the relevant branch.

Expecting a guaranteed delivery deadline

The official troubleshooting instructions do not state a universal delivery service level or a guaranteed waiting period. Wait for the sync operation to complete, then follow the account-side checks rather than relying on an assumed time window.

What these steps can—and cannot—establish

They can identify whether the problem is connectivity, synchronization, a hidden library view, device delivery, or an incomplete digital order. They cannot establish a single root cause for every missing free title. Amazon’s official help pages used for these procedures do not provide a publication or revision date, a named statistic, or a universal explanation that applies only to free books.

Buying a new Kindle, case, charger, transfer cable, or other hardware is not a documented requirement for this problem. The supported sequence is to connect, sync, inspect the library view, verify the account entry, deliver to the correct device, check the order when the account entry is missing, and then maintain the e-reader if necessary.
