A validation rule can be present in a form and still be incomplete. In one form-builder incident described by Naveen Alavilli, choosing Required added a rule to each question, but a second dropdown—needed to specify whether it meant Required or Semirequired—had no default. The builder did not reject the unfinished rules until the author tried to save.
What went wrong in the form builder
The form builder organized content into forms, tabs, sections, and questions. Each question had a type and a list of validations. When the author selected a Required validation, the interface opened another dropdown asking which behavior to apply: strict Required or Semirequired. That second setting started empty.
The rule could therefore appear in a question’s validation list even though it lacked information the system needed to interpret it. After configuring roughly fifteen questions, the author attempted to save and saw the error 'Required' validation type is required for each affected question. The account describes a personal incident, not evidence that this behavior is common across form builders. Naveen Alavilli’s account on DEV Community displays a September 23 posting date; its year is not established in the article text.
Why the error was accurate but late
The underlying ambiguity was the empty subtype. It could mean either “the author has not finished configuring this rule” or “the author has configured the rule to have no subtype.” The stored form had no way to distinguish those states.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
As a result, the system waited until save to determine whether each rule was complete. Its error correctly identified missing information, but only after the author had repeated the same unfinished configuration across several questions. The issue is not simply whether a validation item exists; it is whether that item contains every value required for a meaningful, valid rule.
Three ways to prevent or surface an incomplete rule
Represent only valid rule combinations
If the only supported outcomes are strict requiredness and semirequired behavior, model them as separate rules: Required and Semirequired. This removes the empty-subtype combination from the set of possible completed rules. It is most suitable when the valid choices are few and stable, and when an unfinished combined rule does not need to be stored as a legitimate editing state.

Choose a default deliberately
A default can prevent the blank subtype from being saved accidentally. Alavilli suggests strict Required as a conservative choice because it may reject data that a more permissive setting would allow. That is a design judgment, not a universal rule: the right default depends on the product’s business requirements and what users reasonably expect. A default is harmful if it silently changes the intended behavior.
Keep the partial state, but flag it during editing
Some editors need to represent an unfinished rule while a person is configuring it. In that case, the interface can mark the rule incomplete when the author leaves it without choosing a subtype, rather than waiting until form submission. Alavilli proposes showing an error marker on leaving a half-configured rule. This moves feedback earlier while preserving the intermediate state; the account proposes this remedy but does not report implementing or testing it.

How to choose among the options
Start with the states the product actually intends to support. Alavilli frames the schema-design question as: “what is the set of rows this table can hold that no author would ever have meant?” Treat that as a prompt to inspect the model, not as a claim that every extra state is necessarily a defect.
- Does editing require incomplete states? If not, separate valid rule types can make them unrepresentable. If yes, preserve the intermediate state and give it a clear incomplete status.
- How many valid combinations exist? A small, fixed set is easier to model directly than a rule plus a loosely constrained collection of optional settings.
- Could a default cause the wrong outcome? Choose one only when its behavior is safe and predictable for the product’s users.
- How soon does the author need feedback? Inline or on-blur validation can catch an omission before the final save, while save-time validation remains useful as a final integrity check.
- Where is change least costly? Changing the data model can eliminate invalid combinations at their source; changing the editor can improve feedback while retaining a flexible model. The best fit depends on product constraints rather than a measured comparison in the incident report.
Configuration needs validation like code
Alavilli’s broader observation is that “Configuration is code without a compiler.” A configuration screen may look simpler than a programming language, but it still combines choices into states that must satisfy rules. Checking only that a row or rule exists is analogous to checking that a program contains text without checking whether its required inputs are present.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For any configurable system, identify required parameters for each option, decide whether incomplete combinations can exist during editing, and make the interface and final validation agree on what counts as complete. Earlier feedback helps authors recover while the choice is still in front of them; a model that excludes nonsensical finished states prevents the same class of omission from being stored at all.
