A crease in a foldable screen can be normal; a growing black spot, line, crack, touch failure, or new brightness change is more concerning. Flexible panels are built from thin layers that bend, so the fold may remain visible even when the phone is working correctly. Damage from impact, pressure, debris, or a deteriorating protective film can produce similar-looking symptoms, however. Because the same symptom can have different causes, do not press, peel, or repeatedly fold the affected area to test it. Identify the exact model, record what you see, follow that model’s care instructions, and use manufacturer support or a qualified repair provider when the panel itself may be damaged.
Is a crease on a foldable phone normal?
Often, yes. A flexible display is a layered assembly designed to bend rather than a rigid sheet of glass. Samsung describes its foldable construction as protective film, a protective layer, Ultra Thin Glass, and an AMOLED panel. The layers flex together, so a fine line or shallow trough along the hinge can be visible, especially when light strikes it from the side or when you view the screen at an angle.
Samsung’s support guidance says the display can have “some fine bends depending on the angle” and that wrinkles may be visible in the folded center area. That observation applies to the models and guidance Samsung names; it does not prove that every crease on every brand is harmless. A crease that is stable, evenly aligned with the hinge, and not accompanied by image or touch problems is more consistent with the display’s intended flexible construction than with a failed panel.

Signs that a crease may not be routine
- The line appeared suddenly after a drop, impact, pressure, or closing the phone on an object.
- The fold is accompanied by a crack, colored line, black area, flicker, touch dead zone, or a white line that appears while folding.
- The raised area, dent, or distortion is spreading away from the hinge.
- The phone no longer opens or closes normally, or the hinge feels obstructed.
Do not bend the phone farther, press the ridge flat, or keep opening and closing it to see whether the symptom changes. These actions can turn a limited defect into broader damage.
What causes black spots, dead pixels, and lines?
A “dead pixel” is commonly used for a tiny pixel that stays black, but a black spot on a flexible phone can also be a larger damaged region, a crease-related panel failure, or an obstruction in a protective layer. A description alone cannot identify which one you have.
Samsung associates heavy external impact with colored spots or lines, partial black spots, and cracks. It also warns that damage to the Ultra Thin Glass can spread into surrounding areas and may appear as a white line while the device is being folded. Impact is one possible cause, not proof that every dark pixel resulted from a drop. Manufacturing defects, pressure, contamination, or other component faults can produce different symptoms.

Check location before assuming a defect
On Galaxy Z Fold7, Z Flip7, and Z Flip7 FE, Samsung says a small spot near the top of the main screen can be the location of embedded proximity and ambient-light sensors. That explanation is specific to those models and that location. It should not be generalized to an arbitrary spot, an older device, or a mark that is growing. What not to do
- Do not massage or push a black area in an attempt to revive pixels.
- Do not use a pin, fingernail, card edge, or tool to lift a mark or film.
- Do not deliberately drop, twist, or repeatedly fold the phone as a “test.”
- Do not apply heat, solvent, or liquid cleaner to the fold or under a film.
Why can brightness look uneven?
Uneven brightness can mean several things: viewing-angle differences in an organic display, a temporary software or brightness-control condition, a damaged panel, or a protective film that is lifting or distorting light. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish one universal cause or a reliable at-home test for uneven brightness on all flexible displays.
First note whether the variation follows the viewing angle, appears only at a particular brightness level, or remains fixed in the same physical area. Compare a plain white, gray, and black image at a moderate brightness setting, without pressing the screen. If the change is new, persistent, or increasing—especially if it appears with a black spot, line, crack, flicker, or touch problem—contact the maker for model-specific diagnosis. Do not interpret a single photograph as proof: cameras can exaggerate banding and reflections.

Could a bubbled or lifted protector be the problem?
Yes. The factory film on a foldable inner screen can scratch, bubble, or lift at an edge through normal wear. Samsung says that in some cases only the film is damaged and that the film is replaceable. A bubble or lifted border therefore does not automatically mean the OLED panel underneath has failed.

Samsung warns that arbitrary attachment or removal can damage the panel, and that an uncertified film can distort the image or affect performance. For the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 instructions cited by Samsung, the company directs owners to Samsung Support for replacement; that page describes a free one-time replacement under its stated guidance. Availability, eligibility, country, model, and current policy can differ, so verify the offer rather than treating it as universal.
Google’s Pixel Fold safety guidance is stricter: do not pick at the preinstalled film’s edges, do not remove it, and do not apply a third-party screen protector. Follow the instructions for your exact Pixel Fold model instead of importing Samsung’s process, or vice versa.

Film-only symptoms versus possible panel symptoms

Safe inspection and care steps
- Identify the exact device. Record the model name, generation, software version, purchase region, and whether the symptom is on the inner or cover display. Repair and film instructions differ by model and country.
- Document the symptom without stressing the hinge. Take photographs at normal brightness from straight on and at an angle. Note when it began, whether there was a drop or pressure event, and whether the mark changes while opening. Do not create a new fold cycle solely for documentation.
- Inspect the surface in good light. Look for a film bubble, lifting edge, crack, dent, or debris. Do not scrape, lift, or flatten anything.
- Check basic function. Test touch gently in the affected region, confirm whether the mark appears in screenshots, and compare a plain-color image. A screenshot can help distinguish rendered content from a physical surface problem, but it cannot certify panel health.
- Back up important data. Use the phone’s normal cloud or computer backup while the device still works. Do not factory-reset before support tells you to; a reset will not repair physical damage and can complicate evidence of the fault.
- Contact the correct support channel. Use the manufacturer’s support site or an authorized, qualified repair professional. Provide the model, serial or IMEI if requested, photographs, purchase date, and a clear timeline.
How to prevent flexible-display damage
Flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens. Google’s Pixel Fold guidance specifically says to keep crumbs, fingernails, and sharp objects away. Before closing a foldable, check both halves and the hinge area for sand, grit, cards, keys, coins, metal powder, or other debris. A particle trapped between the halves can apply concentrated pressure to the display.
- Keep the phone away from sand, dirt, and loose particles; clean the surrounding area using the exact method the manufacturer permits.
- Never close the device on a card, key, cable, or other object.
- Do not press the center fold or use sharp objects on the screen.
- Avoid drops, twisting pressure, and carrying the phone where it can be crushed.
- Do not assume a dust or water-resistance rating from one model applies to another. Google states that the Pixel Fold is not dust-resistant; other devices have different specifications.
- Use only a protector approved for the exact model, and do not stack films unless the manufacturer says it is safe.
When should you seek repair immediately?
Arrange professional help promptly if a black area or line is expanding, a crack is visible, the screen flickers, touch fails, the hinge catches, or the phone becomes unusually hot or shows other hardware symptoms. Keep the device folded or open in the position that avoids pressure, according to the maker’s advice, and do not continue normal use if the panel is visibly breaking apart.

Google warns that repairs performed without sufficient technical expertise can permanently damage the device. Samsung’s film instructions likewise direct users to its support channel for replacement. A qualified provider can determine whether the replaceable film, the display assembly, the hinge, or another component is involved.

Coverage and data considerations
Warranty and protection outcomes depend on the exact model, country, purchase date, cause of damage, and policy in force when you make the claim. The sources do not establish a universal warranty result for creases, dead pixels, brightness variation, or film wear. Ask what inspection fees, parts, turnaround time, and data-handling procedures apply before authorizing work. If the phone is still usable, complete a backup and remove sensitive accounts only when the service process requires it.
What changed with newer foldable technology?
On July 14, 2026, Samsung Electronics America announced a display structure it calls Flex Titanium for next-generation Galaxy foldable devices. The announcement describes a titanium-alloy film and a titanium plate intended to reduce crease visibility. Samsung says the design uses micro-patterned holes in the titanium plate to combine flexibility with durability. The announcement says the technology will debut in next-generation devices; it does not say that it eliminates creases, applies to all current phones, or can be retrofitted to an existing device.
That announcement is a technology direction, not a reason to treat a visible crease on a current phone as a defect or to expect a replacement part with the new structure. For an existing device, the model’s current support instructions and an inspection of the actual symptom remain decisive.
A practical decision rule
Use this sequence: stable crease only usually calls for normal careful use; film bubble or lifted edge with an otherwise normal display calls for manufacturer-approved film service; new black spot, line, crack, touch failure, spreading mark, or persistent brightness change calls for a backup and professional evaluation. If you cannot tell which category fits, treat the symptom as potentially physical damage and avoid actions that add pressure or remove the film.
