A version change can be rolled back when a build fails without being rolled back when a later artifact upload fails. The difference is the workflow’s conditions and rollback logic—not an automatic rule that treats every failed step alike. Without the workflow file, it is not possible to identify the literal line behind this behavior.

Why the two failures can have different results

A build and an artifact upload are separate stages. A workflow may update a version, run a build, then upload the resulting files. If its failure handling restores the version specifically when the build fails, that restoration can run before the upload stage begins. If the build succeeds and upload fails later, the build-failure rollback condition is no longer met.

GitHub Actions supports conditions that distinguish success from failure. For example, downstream jobs can be configured to run only after an earlier workflow succeeds or only after it fails. See GitHub’s workflow_run event documentation. The title’s “one line” may be such a condition or a rollback command, but the exact line cannot be determined without the workflow.

What an artifact upload does—and does not do

A workflow artifact is a file or collection of files produced during a run. Artifacts can preserve outputs after a job finishes and pass them to another job; they are not the version itself, a commit, or a release tag. GitHub explains workflow artifacts and their uses.

Upload failure handling also depends on configuration. The upload-artifact action warns by default when a path matches no files, and its behavior can be configured to error or ignore. The documentation also notes that artifacts in action versions v4 and later are immutable and require unique names; those versions are not currently supported on GitHub Enterprise Server. Check both the action version and the platform when diagnosing a failure. See the upload-artifact action reference.

Trace what “un-bump” means in your workflow

Before deciding whether a version was reverted, identify what changed. A version string written in the runner’s workspace is different from a committed file, a Git tag, or a published release. Each has different persistence and rollback implications.

  1. Find the version change. Locate the command or action that computes or writes the new version, and determine whether it only edits a workspace file or also commits or tags it.
  2. Follow the build step. Identify the build command and whether upload runs in the same job afterward or in a dependent job.
  3. Read the conditions. Check step-level and job-level conditions, including any condition that runs cleanup or restores a previous version after a failure.
  4. Trace rollback scope. Determine whether restoration is explicitly tied to build failure or runs after any failure. Also check whether a later job or separate workflow performs cleanup.
  5. Check what persisted. A workspace edit may disappear when the runner ends, while a commit, tag, or release has separate persistence rules.

This trace identifies the meaningful “one line”: it may be a condition deciding when rollback runs, a command that changes the version, or a job dependency that determines whether upload runs. Do not assume which one applies until you inspect the actual workflow.

When the version is a tag or release

Rollback becomes more consequential if “version” means a Git tag or published release rather than a file edit. GitHub recommends semantic version tags for actions, such as v1.1.3, and describes keeping major and minor tags current where appropriate. Its release guidance also warns that immutable releases prevent force-pushing tags associated with those releases. Check whether the workflow updates a file, a mutable tag, or an immutable release before attempting to undo a bump. Read GitHub’s guidance on releasing and maintaining actions.

Examples are patterns, not proof of your setup

Some projects publish only after tests pass; others build on selected events and publish only when a version tag is pushed. For example, the semantic-release guidance describes testing across Node.js versions before publishing, while Python Packaging Authority guidance shows a build-and-publish workflow organized around events and version-tag pushes. These illustrate possible designs, not the implementation behind an unidentified workflow. semantic-release GitHub Actions guidance and Python Packaging Authority’s GitHub Actions publishing guide provide examples.
