A green result means the invoice passed the checks that a particular validator actually ran—not that every part of the invoice is correct. A Factur-X file can pass a PDF/A check while its embedded XML, invoice business rules, or visible values remain unchecked or inconsistent. To interpret the result, identify the profile and rulesets used, then confirm whether the workflow checked the XML and reconciled it with the PDF.
Four gaps that can leave a broken invoice with a green result
Factur-X validation can involve distinct checks: the PDF container, the embedded invoice XML, business rules, and agreement between the human-readable and machine-readable invoice. A pass in one area does not establish a pass in the others. The four cases below are a practical way to understand those gaps, not an official taxonomy.
1. The run checked the PDF/A container, not the invoice data
veraPDF documents validation against PDF/A and PDF/UA profiles. A passing PDF/A check is evidence about the PDF’s conformance to the selected PDF/A requirements; it does not, by itself, establish that the embedded Factur-X XML is valid or that invoice amounts and other business data are correct. A green result is meaningful only in relation to the profile selected. veraPDF uses embedded conformance metadata for automatic profile selection by default, and its CLI also supports explicit profile selection. Check the report to see which profile was actually used and whether it matches the target you need; do not treat a pass under an unintended profile as proof of the intended conformance. 3. The run did not validate the XML or the relevant business rules
Factur-X checks may be divided into XML structure and schema validation, EN 16931 business rules, Factur-X profile rules, and jurisdiction-specific rules. These are separate layers: passing one does not show that omitted layers passed. Ask which checks were run, for which invoice profile and jurisdiction, and which versions of the schema and rulesets were used.
For a concrete, dated example—not a specification of every installation—the conformity report says its setup used Mustangproject 2.26.0, the Factur-X 1.0.07 XSD, CEN Schematron 1.3.16, and French BR-FR Schematron v1.3.0. It lists a last run of 2 September 2026. Treat those as that report’s versions and run details, not as universal or necessarily current versions for every validator deployment. 4. The visible PDF and embedded XML disagree
Checking the PDF container and validating XML or business rules do not necessarily establish that every value a person sees in the rendered invoice matches the value in the embedded XML. The Mustangserver 1.7.0 manual describes parsing invoice data into calculated values and comparing a supplied grand total with calculated item totals. That example illustrates a calculation check; it is not evidence that every Mustang mode compares the rendered PDF against every XML field. What to inspect before relying on a green result
Read the validation report as evidence about a defined set of checks, not as an all-purpose invoice certification. Record enough detail to reproduce and interpret that result:

- PDF container: the validator and version, the PDF/A profile, and the reported outcome.
- Embedded invoice: whether the XML was extracted and validated, and which Factur-X profile and schema version were used.
- Business rules: whether EN 16931, Factur-X profile rules, and relevant jurisdiction-specific rules were run; note each ruleset version.
- Visible-to-XML agreement: whether the workflow compared rendered invoice values with XML values, and the exact fields or totals covered.
- Context: the jurisdiction and the target receiver or authority. A pass alone does not establish acceptance by a particular recipient.
Keep the scope attached to the result when sharing it: name the validator, version, profile, rulesets, and any reconciliation actually performed. The available documentation does not establish that every Mustang deployment runs every validation layer or that every visible field is compared with XML.
