If a DEWALT FLEXVOLT battery will not power a tool, the cause may be a low charge, shipping mode, a poor seating connection, an incompatible tool model, a temperature-related charging pause, or a fault in the battery, charger, or tool. Start with the model numbers and manuals, then make safe external checks. Do not open or modify the battery. If the problem persists after testing compatible equipment, contact DEWALT support or an authorized service location.
How FLEXVOLT compatibility works
FLEXVOLT is a dual-voltage battery platform. DEWALT says a FLEXVOLT pack operates as a 20V MAX battery in a supported DEWALT 20V MAX product and as a 60V MAX battery in a supported 60V MAX product. The pack switches voltage when moved between supported tools; it does not provide both voltages simultaneously in every tool.
The platform is designed for compatible DEWALT 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. Some DEWALT 120V MAX products use two 60V MAX packs. Those platform labels do not establish compatibility with every tool that looks similar, every older DEWALT model, every charger, or equipment from another brand. Check the exact tool and battery model numbers against the tool manual and the relevant product instructions before troubleshooting further.

DEWALT’s MAX voltage labels describe maximum initial voltage measured without workload; the nominal voltage is lower. In practical terms, a 20V MAX or 60V MAX label identifies the platform, not a promise that a pack will fit or work in every tool carrying a related number.

That model-by-model check matters even when a battery appears to slide onto the tool. Physical fit alone does not confirm electrical or manufacturer-approved compatibility. If a FLEXVOLT pack runs one supported tool but not another, the result could point to a compatibility difference or a problem on the second tool’s side; it does not, by itself, prove that the battery is defective. Use the manual for the exact model rather than relying on the behavior of a different tool.
For tools labeled 120V MAX, do not assume that one FLEXVOLT pack is sufficient: some products use two 60V MAX packs. Confirm the required configuration in the tool manual and follow its instructions for both packs. Do not improvise a combination based on the tool’s appearance or a pack’s voltage label.
Start with these safety checks
- Switch the tool off before removing or reinstalling the battery, and use the release mechanism described in the tool instructions.
- Inspect the outside of the pack for cracks, impact damage, swelling, or contamination. Do not put a visibly damaged pack back into service; seek DEWALT guidance.
- Do not pry open the case, modify the pack, short its terminals, jump-start it, or bypass its electronics.
- Do not use liquid or abrasive tools to clean battery contacts. The safe checks here are external inspection, correct seating, model verification, and testing with compatible equipment that is not visibly damaged.
Stop if a pack or tool is visibly damaged or behaves abnormally. Diagnostic comparisons are for equipment that appears safe to handle; they are not a reason to keep testing a damaged battery. If you are unsure whether a condition is safe, set the equipment aside and ask DEWALT for guidance.
Troubleshoot in a safe order
1. Identify the tool, battery, and charger models
Read the tool’s nameplate or model marking and identify the battery and charger. Use the tool manual to confirm that the exact tool accepts the relevant DEWALT 20V MAX or 60V MAX platform. Check the battery and charger manuals for their own instructions as well. Do not infer compatibility from the shape of a battery rail or from another tool taking the same-looking pack.
If the tool is not listed as compatible, stop there: a pack that physically fits is not proof that the combination is approved. If the models are compatible, continue with the checks below. Keep the model numbers available; they are useful if you need support or service.
Look up the manual by the tool’s model number rather than by a broad platform name. The model-specific document is where to verify compatibility, battery handling, and any special operating instructions. Do the same for the charger if you are trying to interpret an indicator; light patterns and their meanings vary by charger model.
2. Check whether the battery is still in shipping mode
Some FLEXVOLT packs have a shipping cap or shipping mode. DEWALT manuals describe this state as electrically disconnecting cell strings, so the pack will not behave like one in normal use. If the pack has just been unpacked or still has its shipping cap, follow the battery’s instructions to remove the cap and put the pack into ordinary use mode.

Shipping mode is a particularly useful check when a pack is new to you or has just been removed from its packaging. A pack in that state can appear unresponsive even though the issue is not simply that it needs charging. Follow the battery instructions exactly; do not treat the cap as a repairable connector or attempt to change the internal electrical configuration.
3. Remove and firmly reseat the battery
With the tool off, release the pack using the tool’s normal release mechanism. Look for obvious external damage or contamination, then reinstall the pack according to the tool instructions. It should be seated as described in the manual; do not force it into place. A pack that is not fully seated may not make the expected connection.
If you see cracks, swelling, impact damage, or other concerning physical changes, do not test the pack in another tool. Stop using it and contact DEWALT for guidance. A damaged pack should not be treated as an ordinary seating problem.

If the pack does not move or latch as the instructions describe, stop and check the tool manual. Never bypass the release mechanism or attempt to alter the pack or tool to make them fit.
4. Check charge, but treat the fuel gauge as an estimate
If the pack has a fuel-gauge button, use it to check the indicated charge. If the pack appears low, charge it with a compatible DEWALT charger and follow that charger’s instructions. The gauge can be useful, but it does not prove that the battery can deliver power to a tool or that the tool itself is functioning.
DEWALT’s manual explains that the fuel gauge indicates charge left in the pack, not tool functionality, and that its reading can vary with product components, temperature, and the end-user application. A lit gauge therefore does not rule out a battery, tool, or connection fault. Likewise, no gauge lights do not by themselves prove the pack has failed; charge it with a compatible charger and consult the battery manual.
In particular, do not treat the gauge as a pass/fail test. A lit indicator means the gauge is reporting charge, but it cannot confirm that the pack will power a particular tool. Conversely, no lights can mean the charge is too low to show a usable indication; it is not a unique diagnosis. The next useful step is to charge with a compatible charger and then, if necessary, compare with known-compatible equipment.
5. Interpret the charger indication using its own manual
A charger may pause charging if the battery is too hot or too cold. The charger can resume once the pack reaches an appropriate temperature. If the charger indicates a hot/cold delay, let the pack return to a suitable temperature naturally, then check the indicator meanings in the manual for that exact charger model.

Do not assume every charger uses the same light pattern or indicator meanings. A refusal to charge or a fault indication may point to a faulty battery, but it can also mean the charger has a problem. The indicator alone does not isolate which component is responsible.
Do not try to speed up a temperature-related delay with external heating or cooling. Allow the pack to return to a suitable temperature naturally, then follow the charger’s model-specific instructions. If it continues to pause or show a fault after the pack has reached an appropriate temperature, avoid guessing at the light pattern and consult the charger manual or DEWALT support.
A charger indication is information about the charging process, not a conclusive test of the battery alone. If practical and safe, comparing the pack and charger with other known-compatible equipment may help identify which component is involved. If you do not have suitable equipment, service evaluation is safer than repeated attempts with a questionable combination.

If the pack is not visibly damaged and you have suitable equipment, compare the components one at a time:
- Try the suspect battery in another known-compatible DEWALT tool.
- Alternatively, try a known-good compatible battery in the tool that will not run.
- If charging is the problem, check the suspect pack and charger using only compatible equipment and the procedures in their manuals.
- Record which combination works and which does not, along with any charger indication. This can help DEWALT support or an authorized service location assess the fault.
This comparison can help distinguish a tool-side issue from a battery or charger issue, but it is not proof that a component is safe to use if it is damaged or behaving abnormally. Do not continue testing a damaged pack or force a questionable combination.
Change one component at a time so the result is meaningful. For example, if the suspect pack works in another compatible tool, that makes a tool-side issue or compatibility difference worth checking; it does not certify every feature of the pack. If a known-good compatible battery also fails in the suspect tool, that points toward checking the tool or its model-specific instructions. Note the result without treating it as a final diagnosis.
7. Stop and arrange service if the fault persists
Stop troubleshooting if the pack will not charge, the tool still will not run with a known-good compatible battery, a charger continues to indicate a fault, or any component is damaged. Contact DEWALT support or an authorized service location rather than opening or attempting to repair the pack. Use the tool model number to locate its manual and follow any model-specific instructions.

What common symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
| Observation | What it may suggest | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| No lights on the pack gauge | The pack may be low or below the gauge’s usable indication; this alone does not prove pack failure. | Charge with a compatible DEWALT charger and consult the battery manual. |
| Charger pauses or indicates a hot/cold delay | The pack may be outside the charger’s charging temperature range. | Let it return to a suitable temperature naturally, then check that charger’s manual. |
| The pack has a shipping cap or was just unpacked | Shipping mode may be electrically disconnecting the cell strings. | Follow the battery instructions to put it into normal use mode. |
| The pack works in one tool but not another | Compatibility, the condition of the second tool, or a tool-side fault may be involved. | Check the exact models against the tool manual and contact service if the fault persists. |
| The pack and charger both appear faulty, or the charger refuses to charge | Either the battery or charger may be responsible. | Use known-compatible equipment if safe, or arrange service evaluation. |
These symptoms are clues, not definitive diagnoses. In particular, a functioning gauge does not establish that the pack can run a tool, and a charger fault indication does not establish that the battery is the failed component.
The same observation can have more than one explanation. For instance, a pack that works in one tool but not another might be compatible with the first tool but not the second, or the second tool may need service. A charger pause can reflect temperature, while an ongoing refusal to charge may involve the pack or the charger. Use the model manuals and a controlled comparison to narrow the possibilities instead of replacing a component based on one clue.
Why a battery can show charge but still not run a tool
The fuel gauge reports an estimate of remaining charge; it does not test the entire tool-and-battery system under operation. DEWALT cautions that the gauge does not indicate tool functionality and may vary with product components, temperature, and application. A lit gauge can therefore coexist with a problem in the pack, the tool, or their connection.
That is why model verification, correct use mode, reseating, and a controlled comparison with known-compatible equipment are more useful than treating the gauge as a pass/fail test. If the pack indicates charge but the tool remains unresponsive, continue with the external checks rather than concluding that the battery is good or bad based on the gauge alone.
The practical distinction is between an indication of stored charge and evidence that the complete combination is operating properly. The gauge addresses the former; it does not verify the model match, the charger, the tool’s condition, or the connection when the pack is installed. Follow the sequence above so that each check answers a separate question without exposing the pack to an unsupported repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to replace a battery—and when not to
Do not buy a replacement solely because the tool will not start or the charger refuses to charge. First verify compatibility, shipping mode, seating, charge, temperature, and whether the issue follows the battery or stays with the tool or charger. A failed charger or tool can resemble a failed battery, and a charger indication may not distinguish between those components.
If a pack is confirmed missing or faulty, choose a FLEXVOLT battery only after verifying that its exact model is compatible with the tool. DEWALT FLEXVOLT packs include models such as DCB606 and DCB612, but the model name alone is not a substitute for checking the tool’s manual. If a charger is missing or confirmed faulty, verify the replacement charger’s compatibility with the pack and follow its manual. Persistent faults or physical damage are reasons to contact DEWALT support or an authorized service location rather than attempting a battery repair.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Replacement is most relevant after the problem has been isolated or when a pack is missing. A new battery will not resolve a tool-side fault or an incompatible tool-and-pack combination, and buying a charger will not help if the issue is elsewhere. Choose only equipment whose compatibility is confirmed for the exact models, and use DEWALT support or authorized service when the diagnosis remains uncertain.

Questions to have ready for support
To make a service conversation more useful, note the tool, battery, and charger model numbers; whether the pack has a shipping cap; what the fuel gauge shows, if present; the charger’s indication; and the result of any safe test with another known-compatible tool or battery. Report visible damage rather than continuing to test. The exact manual for each model remains the authority for its fit, indicators, and handling instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my DEWALT FLEXVOLT battery power my tool?
Possible causes include low charge, shipping mode, a pack that is not fully seated, a tool that is not compatible with that exact battery model, temperature affecting charging, or a fault in the pack, tool, or charger. Check the tool and battery manuals, then use the safe external checks in order. A fuel-gauge light does not prove that the tool-and-pack combination is working.
Why won’t my DEWALT battery charge?
A pack may be too hot or cold for the charger to continue, or a fault may involve the battery or charger. Let a temperature-delayed pack return to a suitable temperature naturally and consult the manual for the exact charger’s indicator pattern. The indicator alone may not identify which component is responsible.
Can a FLEXVOLT battery work in any DEWALT tool?
No. DEWALT describes FLEXVOLT as operating as a 20V MAX pack in supported 20V MAX products and as a 60V MAX pack in supported 60V MAX products. Verify compatibility for the exact tool model in its manual; physical fit or a related voltage label is not enough.
Does a lit fuel gauge mean the battery is good?
No. DEWALT says the fuel gauge indicates charge, not tool functionality, and its reading can vary with product components, temperature, and application. A lit gauge does not rule out a pack, tool, or connection issue.
Should I open or jump-start a battery that will not work?
No. Do not open, modify, short, jump-start, or bypass the battery’s electronics. Stop using a damaged or persistently faulty pack and contact DEWALT support or an authorized service location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich FLEXVOLT battery should I buy as a replacement?
First confirm that the pack is actually missing or faulty and check the exact tool model’s compatibility requirements. DCB606 and DCB612 are FLEXVOLT models, but the model name alone does not confirm compatibility with every tool. If the diagnosis is uncertain, seek DEWALT support before buying a replacement.
The Bottom Line
A FLEXVOLT pack that will not run a tool may be depleted, still in shipping mode, improperly seated, incompatible with that exact tool, affected by temperature during charging, or faulty. Check the model-specific manuals, gauge and charger indications, and—if the equipment is undamaged—compare with known-compatible equipment. Do not open or modify the pack. If the fault persists or anything is damaged, contact DEWALT support or an authorized service location before replacing parts.
