A Claude-generated dashboard can show a wrong number for two fundamentally different reasons: the chart may be running a query that does not match your intended metric, or the connected source may not contain the latest records yet. A recent “last refreshed” timestamp only tells you when that query result was refreshed; it does not prove that the warehouse or app behind it has finished ingesting current data.
First identify how the dashboard was made. Claude Dashboards is a beta feature that generates SQL for charts against connected data sources. A general Artifact, Claude Code project, Cowork artifact, or exported custom HTML page may use different storage, connection, and refresh behavior. The checks below start with the native Dashboards workflow and mark where the evidence does not automatically carry over to custom dashboards.
Start by identifying the dashboard workflow
Native Claude Dashboards
In Claude Dashboards, every chart has a SQL query. The chart interface displays that query and the time its data was last refreshed. This makes the query the first place to investigate a plausible-looking but incorrect value. The feature is documented as a beta on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans; an Enterprise organization must enable it. If the feature or connector has not been enabled for your organization, a failed or partial setup can look like a data problem.
Artifacts, Claude Code, Cowork, and exported pages
Claude can also create a general Artifact, a code project, a Cowork deliverable, or a page that you export and host yourself. The Dashboards guide’s SQL-and-connected-source model should not be assumed for those outputs. A custom page might read a static file, an API response captured earlier, a local database, or a user-specific connection. It might not refresh automatically at all. Determine what code, endpoint, file, or app supplies the numbers before applying the native-dashboard troubleshooting steps.

A five-minute triage sequence
- Record the symptom. Write down the chart name, the displayed value, the expected value, the time range, and when you noticed the discrepancy. Distinguish an incorrect value from an old but internally consistent value.
- Open the chart query. In a native Dashboard, inspect the SQL shown with the chart. Save a copy before asking for changes so you can compare the original and revised logic.
- Check the chart’s last-refreshed time. Treat it as the time the chart result was refreshed, not as proof that the source system is current.
- Check the source directly. Verify that the warehouse table or connected application contains the records you expect and that its ingestion or synchronization job has completed.
- Confirm the connection and viewer context. Make sure the dashboard points to the intended warehouse or app, and that the person viewing it is using the correct authorized connection.
When the SQL counts the wrong thing
A query can execute successfully and still answer a different question from the one you had in mind. Anthropic’s guidance is to open the query and tell Claude what to change if it is not counting what you meant. Give a precise definition and name the relevant table or app when you know it.
Verify the source table and columns
Check that the query reads the intended table, view, or event stream. Similar names such as orders, order_items, and orders_archive can produce very different totals. Confirm that the selected date, status, plan, account, and amount columns represent the business fields used in your reporting definition. If a view applies hidden joins or filters, inspect that view as well as the chart query.
Check filters and status rules
Look for conditions that silently exclude rows: a particular status, a non-null requirement, a test-account exclusion, a region filter, or an inner join that removes unmatched records. “Signups” might mean every account created, only verified accounts, or accounts that completed a later step. State which interpretation you need and ask Claude to encode it explicitly.

Check aggregation and duplicate rows
COUNT(*), COUNT(DISTINCT user_id), and a sum over a joined detail table answer different questions. A join from one customer to many events can multiply rows and inflate a count. Conversely, deduplicating on the wrong identifier can undercount. Compare the query’s grouping columns with the level at which your metric is defined.
Check date boundaries and time zones
Expressions such as “this month,” “last month,” “last six months,” and “weekly” depend on the query’s boundary logic and the source system’s time zone. A week that starts on Sunday is not the same reporting period as one that starts on Monday. A timestamp stored in UTC can move an event across a local midnight. Inspect the query’s date truncation, start and end conditions, and time-zone conversion instead of assuming the natural-language request was interpreted as your organization defines it.
When the source data is stale
A dashboard cannot display records that are absent from its connected source. Read the chart’s displayed refresh time, then inspect the warehouse table or application itself. Look for the newest record timestamp, the last successful ingestion job, synchronization status, or an upstream processing watermark. If the source is behind, correcting SQL will not make the dashboard current.

Separate chart refresh from source freshness
These are two independent checks:

This distinction is a diagnostic inference from the documented query-and-source design, not a published Anthropic rule about a universal refresh schedule. The cited Dashboards guide confirms that a refresh timestamp is shown, but it does not specify one refresh interval or one universal refresh button for every connector. Use the controls actually available in your workflow, and verify the resulting timestamp and data.
When the wrong source or connection is in use
Anthropic’s examples of warehouse sources include Amazon Redshift, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, and Snowflake; Salesforce is given as an example of a connected app. A prompt that fails to name the intended table or app can lead to an otherwise valid query against the wrong object. Compare the connection configured for the dashboard with the system that owns the authoritative data.
Shared artifacts have viewer-specific connections
For connected artifacts, users may be asked to approve tools or connect their own apps. A person viewing a shared artifact should not assume that their connection is the creator’s connection. Organization owners can also turn app connections off. A chart that works for its author can therefore fail, show an empty subset, or use a different accessible dataset for another viewer.

Check permissions and environment
- Confirm the expected connector is enabled for the organization and account.
- Verify that the viewer can read the table, view, workspace, or app records used by the query.
- Check whether development, staging, and production environments contain different data.
- Confirm that row-level security or user filters are not intentionally limiting the result.
How to revise a native Dashboard query safely
- Copy the original SQL and result. Preserve the initial query, chart value, and refresh time for an audit trail.
- Write the metric definition in plain language. Include the entity being counted, the inclusion and exclusion rules, the date field, the time zone, and the desired grouping.
- Name the source. Tell Claude the exact table, view, or connected app when known. Anthropic recommends describing the question to answer and naming the table or app.
- Ask for one targeted revision. For example, request distinct accounts rather than event rows, or specify verified signups in calendar weeks beginning Monday. Avoid changing several unrelated assumptions at once.
- Inspect the revised SQL. Confirm every changed filter, join, aggregation, and date boundary before accepting the chart.
- Reconcile a small sample. Choose a short date range or a handful of known records and compare the chart with a direct source query or application report.
- Record the accepted definition. Keep the business definition with the dashboard so a future prompt does not silently change what the metric means.
What to do when the dashboard itself throws an error
An execution or rendering error is different from a plausible number that is wrong. Anthropic’s Artifacts documentation describes a “Try fixing with Claude” action that copies error details into a new message. Use that path for syntax, rendering, or runtime failures, but do not treat a successful repair as proof that the metric is now correct. Recheck the SQL, source freshness, and expected result after the artifact renders again. The documentation also notes that the helper is not guaranteed to solve every error; some failures require further troubleshooting.

Anthropic’s separate Enterprise Analytics API documents endpoint-specific freshness. Engagement and adoption metrics typically arrive with about a one-day lag. Cost and usage data typically arrives within four hours but can take up to 24 hours, and late upstream pipelines can add delay. Those figures describe that Analytics API only. They are not Claude Dashboard refresh intervals and do not establish how a warehouse connector or custom artifact updates.

The practical lesson is to use the freshness documentation for the data product you are actually querying. A number can be current within one product’s stated service window and still be unsuitable for a dashboard that requires near-real-time events.

Compare the likely causes before changing anything

These categories are a troubleshooting framework, not an Anthropic ranking of how often dashboards fail. Start with the query and source checks because they produce evidence quickly, then investigate access and rendering when the numbers or page behavior point there.
Prevent future stale or misleading charts
- Define each metric. State entity, status, date field, time zone, deduplication rule, and reporting period.
- Show provenance. Keep the chart query visible and retain the displayed refresh time in operational reviews.
- Monitor the source separately. Alert on failed ingestion, delayed synchronization, or an old source watermark instead of relying only on dashboard timestamps.
- Use a controlled connection. Make the authoritative warehouse or app explicit and document which viewers need access.
- Test boundary cases. Check month ends, daylight-saving transitions, week starts, late-arriving events, and duplicate identifiers.
- Review custom outputs as software. For exported pages or code-generated dashboards, inspect the API calls, cached files, scheduled jobs, and deployment environment; Claude assistance alone does not establish automatic refresh.
What the current documentation does and does not establish
The Claude Dashboards guide, updated in the week accessed on October 13, 2026, establishes that the beta can generate and run SQL against connected sources, display each chart’s query, and show when its data was last refreshed. It recommends describing the question and naming the table or app, and it advises asking Claude to change a query that is not counting what you meant.
It does not establish a universal refresh interval, a single refresh button for all connectors, or a specific cache policy. The Artifacts guide covers multiple artifact types, app connections, user approvals, shared-artifact behavior, and error assistance, but it does not make every custom artifact equivalent to a native Dashboard. No official statistic establishes how often Claude-generated dashboards are wrong or stale. Treat each discrepancy as an evidence-based investigation of query logic, source state, definitions, and access rather than as proof of a general failure rate.
