A 20,000mAh power bank usually labels the charge stored in its internal cells at their nominal cell voltage, not the charge that reaches a phone over USB. A typical 20,000mAh rating at 3.7V represents about 74Wh. The bank must convert that energy to USB voltage, and the phone must process it again, so the device receives less energy than a simple 20,000mAh-to-20,000mAh comparison suggests.

What the 20,000mAh label actually measures

Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe electrical charge, but charge has meaning only alongside voltage. A 20,000mAh cell pack rated at 3.7V contains approximately 20Ah × 3.7V = 74Wh of energy. Watt-hours (Wh) are therefore the more useful number when comparing batteries operating at different voltages.

The headline figure is normally based on the internal lithium-ion cells. USB ports do not deliver power at the cells’ 3.7V nominal level. A power bank raises the cell voltage to a USB output such as 5V. The phone then converts the USB input to the voltage used by its own battery and charging circuitry. Neither conversion is lossless, so the phone cannot receive the full cell-side mAh number.

This is why a label is not necessarily false or deceptive. It describes one point in the power path, while the device receives power at another point. A meaningful comparison must identify both the voltage and the measurement point.

Why voltage conversion changes the usable capacity

The same energy has different mAh values at different voltages

Wh stays tied to energy; mAh changes when voltage changes. In an ideal calculation, 74Wh converted to 5V would equal 14.8Ah, or 14,800mAh, before any conversion loss. That is an energy-equivalent figure, not a promise of USB output. Real circuitry delivers less because conversion and other electrical losses consume part of the stored energy.

The phone performs another conversion

In Panasonic’s smartphone example, the bank raises its cell voltage to 5V USB output and the phone converts the 5V input to roughly its 3.7V battery voltage. The bank’s cell capacity, the USB output capacity and the phone’s battery capacity are consequently measured at different voltage points. Dividing one mAh number by another as though they were measured at the same voltage overstates the number of charges.

Output ratings depend on the stated condition

Even a rated output capacity is meaningful only with its voltage and, where specified, its current condition. A figure stated at 5V/3A is not interchangeable with a figure stated at another voltage or under a different output test. Always keep the voltage attached to every mAh number you compare.

A real 20,000mAh example: Xiaomi PB2020MI

The regional specifications for Xiaomi model PB2020MI show why the figures can look inconsistent while describing the same product family. The pages identify the cell rating separately from the rated USB output.

Specification UAE page Malaysia page How to read it
Cell capacity 20,000mAh at 3.7V 20,000mAh at 3.7V The internal-cell rating; 20Ah × 3.7V = 74Wh.
Rated output capacity 13,000mAh at 5V 12,000mAh at 5V/3A The energy available at the USB side under the stated regional specification.
Listed ports USB-C and USB-A outputs Regional specification for the same model Confirm the exact ports and output limits on the page for your region.

The 13,000mAh and 12,000mAh entries are not universal values for every 20,000mAh bank, nor should they be treated as interchangeable guarantees. They are the figures displayed on the respective regional pages for PB2020MI. Regional documentation, test conditions and current limits can change the rated-output line.

What Panasonic’s 50–60% guidance means

Panasonic’s support explanation says that, in the smartphone-charging situation it describes, about 50–60% of a power bank’s battery capacity may be supplied to the phone. This is manufacturer guidance for that stated context, not an independently established efficiency percentage for every bank and phone.

The range cannot be turned into a guaranteed charge count. Phone battery size, the bank’s conversion design, cable and connector losses, charging protocol, temperature, current draw and the point at which charging stops all affect the result. Use the range as a reminder that substantial energy is lost between the cells and the phone, not as a specification for a particular purchase.

How to estimate what your phone can receive

Use the bank’s Wh rating or its rated output capacity at the relevant voltage, then compare that with the phone’s own battery energy. The following process avoids mixing unlike mAh figures.

  1. Find the bank’s cell energy. If the label gives 20,000mAh at 3.7V, convert 20,000mAh to 20Ah and calculate 20Ah × 3.7V = 74Wh. If the manufacturer publishes Wh directly, use that value.
  2. Find the bank’s output specification. Look for rated output capacity in mAh together with its voltage, such as 13,000mAh at 5V. Treat an output figure with a current condition, such as 12,000mAh at 5V/3A, as a separate specification.
  3. Find the phone’s battery rating. Use the phone maker’s battery information, preferably in Wh. If only mAh and voltage are supplied, convert them with mAh ÷ 1,000 × V. For example, a hypothetical 5,000mAh battery at 3.7V stores 5Ah × 3.7V = 18.5Wh.
  4. Compare energy, not headline charge. Divide the bank’s usable output energy by the phone’s battery energy only as an ideal upper-bound calculation. Apply a margin for conversion and other losses; the result is an estimate, not a guaranteed number of full charges.
  5. Check the operating conditions. Confirm that the chosen port, cable and charging mode support the phone’s required input. A bank may have multiple outputs with different limits, and using several ports at once can change the available output according to the model’s specifications.

For the hypothetical 5,000mAh, 3.7V phone above, 74Wh divided by 18.5Wh equals four ideal battery-equivalents. That arithmetic does not mean a 20,000mAh bank will deliver four complete charges: the phone and bank operate through voltage conversion, and the practical output is lower.

How to compare power banks without being misled by mAh

Start with Wh

Wh allows an apples-to-apples energy comparison when two products use different cell voltages or present their ratings differently. A bank that publishes both cell Wh and output details is easier to evaluate than one that lists only a headline mAh number.

Compare rated output at the same voltage

If one specification says 13,000mAh at 5V and another says 12,000mAh at 5V/3A, the numbers can be compared only after noting the current condition and the exact test definition. Do not compare either number directly with a 20,000mAh cell rating at 3.7V.

Match ports and charging requirements

Check the exact model page for USB-C and USB-A availability, output limits and any restrictions when ports are used together. A physically compatible connector does not by itself establish that the port supports the required voltage or current.

Use the device’s own battery information

Phone capacities vary, and the printed value may be given at a different voltage from the bank’s cell rating. The phone’s battery specification and the bank’s rated output are the relevant inputs for an estimate; the bank’s headline mAh alone is not enough.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Mistake: dividing 20,000mAh by the phone’s mAh. Correction: attach voltage to both figures or convert both to Wh first.
  • Mistake: treating the cell rating as USB output. Correction: find the separate rated-output line, including voltage and current conditions.
  • Mistake: assuming one model’s output applies to all 20,000mAh banks. Correction: read the exact model and regional specification.
  • Mistake: treating Panasonic’s 50–60% guidance as a universal efficiency test. Correction: regard it as context-specific manufacturer guidance.
  • Mistake: promising a fixed number of phone charges. Correction: present any charge count as an estimate that depends on the phone, charging path and operating conditions.
  • Mistake: ignoring the output-current condition. Correction: preserve qualifiers such as 5V/3A whenever you quote a capacity.

What to check before buying or troubleshooting

  1. Locate the exact model’s specification page, not just a retailer headline.
  2. Record the cell voltage and Wh value, if published.
  3. Record rated output capacity with its voltage and current condition.
  4. Verify that the available USB-C or USB-A port matches the phone and cable.
  5. Estimate using the phone’s battery Wh, then allow for conversion losses instead of using a fixed charge promise.
  6. If the result seems low, check whether the bank is powering another device, whether the phone is being used during charging, and whether the selected port has a lower documented output. These conditions change the energy reaching the phone even when the label is correct.

Why a charge count cannot be printed as one universal number

A charge count depends on two separately rated systems: the bank’s output path and the phone’s battery and charging path. Two phones with the same nominal mAh can have different operating voltages, and two banks with the same cell mAh can publish different output capacities. Charging behavior also changes as a battery approaches full, so a marketing claim such as “four charges” cannot substitute for the model’s Wh and rated-output specifications.

The reliable interpretation is therefore conditional: a 20,000mAh label tells you about the bank’s cells at their stated voltage. The USB-rated output tells you more about what can leave the bank, and the phone’s battery specification tells you how much energy one full charge requires. Those three pieces, with their voltages and conditions preserved, provide a defensible estimate.
