A drive labeled 1 TB contains 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Divide those bytes into 1,073,741,824-byte binary units and the result is about 931.32 GiB—often displayed by software as “GB.” The drive has not lost roughly 69 GB; the label and display are counting the same bytes using different-sized units. Formatting and system files can reduce the space available to your files further, but that is a separate issue.
Why a 1TB SSD shows about 931GB
Drive makers use decimal units: 1 kilobyte is 1,000 bytes, 1 megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes, and 1 terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Some operating systems and storage tools calculate capacity using binary units, in which each unit is 1,024 of the previous one. A binary gigabyte is therefore larger than a decimal gigabyte.
Intel’s support example shows the conversion: a decimal 1 TB drive contains 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Divide that by 1,073,741,824 bytes per binary gigabyte and the result is approximately 931.32 GiB. Some software labels that binary-derived figure “GB,” which makes the disagreement look like a shortfall. Intel describes SSD labels as decimal and says most operating systems calculate capacity in binary; its page was last reviewed November 8, 2022, so that should not be read as a claim that every current OS uses the same display convention. Intel’s explanation of advertised versus reported SSD size provides the worked example.

Apple’s support explanation, published February 26, 2025, states that 1 GB is 1 billion bytes and 1 TB is 1 trillion bytes, while noting that actual formatted capacity is less. TB and TiB are different units
The labels are not interchangeable when precision matters. Decimal units use powers of 1,000; binary units use powers of 1,024. The International Electrotechnical Commission prefixes “kibi,” “mebi,” “gibi,” and “tebi” distinguish the binary units: KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB. In casual software displays, binary quantities may still appear with decimal-looking labels such as GB or TB.
| Unit | Bytes | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| GB | 1,000,000,000 | Decimal |
| GiB | 1,073,741,824 | Binary |
| TB | 1,000,000,000,000 | Decimal |
| TiB | 1,099,511,627,776 | Binary |
For another scale example, Intel calculates that a decimal 2 TB drive corresponds to about 1.81898940 TiB when expressed in binary-sized units. The apparent difference grows with capacity because each decimal unit is smaller than the corresponding binary unit. Intel’s 2 TB capacity example gives the calculation.

Why the mismatch exists
The terminology grew out of early computing practice. Seagate explains that computer professionals used “kilo” for 1,024 because it was close to 1,000, then the familiar decimal meaning of kilo became more confusing as computing reached a broader audience. Decimal capacity became the storage-industry convention for drive manufacturers, while binary calculations and mixed labels remained in some software and contexts. Seagate’s guide to storage-capacity measurement describes that history.

That history makes continued disagreement plausible, but it does not prove the display conventions will persist forever. The practical problem remains as long as a decimal drive label is compared with a binary-derived display, especially when the software calls a GiB value “GB.”

Why the space available to files can be lower still
The unit conversion accounts for the familiar 1 TB-to-about-931 GiB difference; it does not explain every capacity figure a computer may show. Formatting and the operating system use storage, and the displayed number may refer to a formatted volume or space available for files rather than the device’s total bytes. Apple explicitly notes that formatted capacity is less than the advertised decimal capacity.
Keep these comparisons separate: first compare the drive’s byte capacity with the display’s unit basis; then consider formatting, system storage, partitions, or other allocations. Those additional deductions vary by device and configuration, and the unit-conversion explanation alone cannot diagnose them.

How to check whether your drive’s capacity makes sense
- Identify what the number measures. Check whether you are looking at the whole physical drive, a partition or volume, formatted capacity, or free space. These are different quantities.
- Compare exact bytes where available. A 1 TB decimal label corresponds to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. If a tool reports about 931.32 binary gigabytes, that is the expected unit conversion.
- Check the unit convention and label. Look for whether the utility uses GB/TB or GiB/TiB, and remember that some software uses “GB” for a binary-derived figure. OS behavior and wording can differ by version and utility.
- Investigate any larger discrepancy separately. If the figures still do not reconcile after accounting for the unit basis and whether you are viewing total or available capacity, check the partition layout and system-reserved storage, or consult the device or operating-system support documentation. The conversion itself does not establish whether a particular SSD is faulty or short-shipped.
What “forever” can—and cannot—mean
Different unit conventions and inconsistent labels have persisted for decades, so it is reasonable to expect confusion to continue while decimal drive labels and binary-style software displays coexist. But no cited evidence establishes that the disagreement is permanent. Clearer labeling can make the same byte count easier to understand; it cannot change the size of the units being compared.
