A 10,000mAh rating tells you the battery’s stated capacity; it does not guarantee a set number of hours between charges. Screen time, demanding apps, weak signal, heat, software activity and battery wear all affect runtime. To find the cause, first check your phone’s battery-usage screen, then work through the likely sources of drain.
Why capacity alone does not determine battery life
Battery capacity is only one part of the equation. How long a phone lasts depends on how much power it uses, the conditions it operates in and the battery’s current condition. Apple describes battery life as a combination of device use and the apps being used (Apple Support); Google likewise identifies activity and operating conditions as factors in Android battery drain (Google Android Help).
That is why two phones with a stated 10,000mAh capacity—or the same phone on different days—may have very different runtimes. There is no reliable universal conversion from 10,000mAh to a specific number of hours without knowing the model, battery condition, workload and conditions.

Start by finding when and where the battery drains
Before changing settings, note whether the phone loses charge during active use, while idle or overnight, or mainly in a particular location. This is a clue to investigate, not proof of a specific cause: navigation or gaming may explain heavy drain during use, while idle drain calls for a closer look at background activity, signal and battery health.

Open Settings > Battery (the wording varies by model) and review the apps and system activity using power. Look for an app that seems unusually high for how much you used it, as well as background activity, notifications or weak-signal periods. iPhone Battery settings show app and system activity, including background activity, low signal and notifications (Apple Support).
On Pixel 6 and later, run the built-in check at Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly (Google Pixel Help). Other Android phones may offer different diagnostics or labels.
Reduce screen and high-demand activity
The display and demanding tasks can use substantial power. Lower brightness, shorten the screen timeout and turn on Battery Saver or the equivalent when you need to extend runtime. Xiaomi also identifies features such as higher refresh rates, sunlight mode, haptics and always-on display as possible contributors on supported devices (Xiaomi Support).

Long sessions of GPS navigation, video streaming, hotspot tethering or graphics-heavy gaming can increase power use. If battery drain tracks one of those activities, reduce its duration or use a less demanding setting where practical. If your phone offers refresh-rate or always-on-display controls, consider lowering or disabling them when they are not useful.
Check background apps and signal conditions
If the battery screen points to an app you rarely use, update it, restrict its background activity or uninstall it if you do not need it. Use the phone’s own controls because available options and their names differ across models.
Weak or absent cellular coverage can also contribute to drain as the phone works to stay connected. Apple lists low signal as a battery-use factor; when practical, move to an area with stronger reception or use Wi-Fi. Notifications and background activity can add to the load, so review whether apps need to update or alert you as often as they do.

Respond to heat and battery wear
If the phone is hot
Google warns that “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use” (Google Android Help). Heat can both increase drain and damage the battery. Stop or reduce the activity producing heat, such as intensive gaming or navigation, and let the phone cool in a safe environment. Heat is one possible cause, not an explanation for every fast-drain problem.

A capacity figure does not establish how much capacity a used battery retains. Rechargeable batteries lose capacity with age and use, so check your phone’s battery-health information or run its manufacturer diagnostic rather than assuming the original rating still describes its present condition.
Apple’s 2026 support guidance says iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; for iPhone 15 models, it gives 1,000 cycles. Apple notes that actual capacity depends on how devices are used and charged. These are Apple-specific design statements, not benchmarks for all phones (Apple Support).

On supported Galaxy devices, Samsung advises running diagnostics through Samsung Members (Samsung Support). On iPhone, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health; Apple says service is appropriate when Battery Health displays “Service” (Apple Support). Exact menus and available checks depend on the model and software.
Account for recent updates, then escalate persistent drain
If the problem began just after an iOS update, Apple advises waiting a few days and checking usage again because background work after an update can temporarily affect battery life (Apple Support). On Android, restart the phone and check for system and app updates using the manufacturer’s instructions.
If the battery still drains unusually quickly after you have reviewed usage, reduced avoidable activity and checked battery health, contact the phone maker or a qualified repair service. Do the same if the phone shows a battery-health warning or remains abnormally hot. Do not choose a replacement battery from capacity alone: the compatible part and service procedure depend on the exact phone model.
