Soulbound: Turnbattle is the Minecraft Java Edition mod that most closely matches a Deltarune-style turn-based RPG. Created by Pixelcite, it replaces Minecraft’s real-time attack loop with turn-based, bullet-hell battles and adds systems such as Graze, TP, rolling health, Soul Traits, classes, skill trees, elemental damage, enemy-specific patterns, and Mercy (SPARE) victories.
What Soulbound: Turnbattle changes
Soulbound is a broad combat overhaul rather than a small weapons add-on. Its project description calls it a hybrid of Earthbound, Deltarune and Undertale mechanics. Battles are divided into turns, with enemies using interactive bullet patterns that you must avoid rather than simply trading hits.

- Graze and TP: movement and risk-taking during attacks feed combat resources.
- Rolling health: the health system behaves differently from ordinary Minecraft hearts.
- Soul Traits: passive abilities shape how a character plays.
- Equipment and appraisal: custom gear can be evaluated, including modded weapons that expose attack-damage statistics.
- Progression: stat points, classes, a skill tree and a bestiary add longer-term RPG development.
- Combat variety: multi-enemy encounters, four elements, enemy-specific soul mechanics and distinct bullet patterns make fights more than repeated attack commands.
- Mercy/SPARE: some encounters can be resolved nonlethally instead of by defeating the enemy.
The result is still Minecraft, but combat becomes a separate tactical activity with timing, positioning and build decisions.
Normal and Rogue-Lite modes
Normal mode
Normal mode provides the persistent RPG framework: classes, equipment, skills, stat investment and a bestiary. It is the better fit if you want a continuing world and a character build that develops over time.

- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
Rogue-Lite mode
Rogue-Lite mode is described as a run-based deck builder. You combine skills into special builds during a run, making each attempt more about adapting a temporary strategy than maintaining one permanent loadout.
Multiplayer and solo play
Soulbound is documented as client-and-server software, so everyone joining a multiplayer world or server needs a compatible installation. It supports cooperative battles. The project also describes NPC party members intended to help solo players, but marks that system as work in progress; do not assume it has the completeness of the main combat systems.

Current Minecraft versions and loader
Modrinth lists Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 and 1.20.1 with Fabric support. CurseForge lists both versions but specifically warns that the 1.20.1 build is no longer being updated and tells users to use the 1.21.1 version. For a new installation, 1.21.1 is therefore the practical target.
| Item | Soulbound status |

| Recommended version | 1.21.1 |
| Older listed version | 1.20.1, no longer updated according to CurseForge |
| Loader | Fabric |

Modrinth lists Caxton for battle damage numbers and says the Fantasy dependency is baked into Soulbound. Follow the current project page’s installation instructions rather than downloading dependencies based on assumptions.

How to install Soulbound
- Install the Java Edition version you intend to use, preferably Minecraft 1.21.1.
- Install the Fabric Loader for that exact Minecraft version and launch the Fabric profile once.
- Download the Soulbound build matching your Minecraft version from its current project page.
- Put the mod file in the Fabric profile’s
modsfolder. For a server, install the matching server-side setup and use the same version as connected clients. - Launch the game or server and check the title screen or mod list for Soulbound before creating a world.
- Keep the project’s stated companion requirements in view. Caxton is used for battle damage numbers, while Fantasy is described as included rather than a separate download.
Do not mix the 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 files, or combine a Fabric installation with a Forge or NeoForge profile.
Controls and the Deltarune-style visual update
The documented default hotkeys are:
- M: open Menu
- G: Inspect
- R: Summon Soul
- Left Alt: remove the Soul
These are defaults and can change through configuration or later releases. The official 1.3.15 changelog added a new Deltarune battle visual style, with an option to return to the old style. It also introduced new animations, a TP bar that changes according to whose turn it is, audio feedback for battle-menu buttons, and moved Run into the Mercy submenu. That release also recorded fixes for multiplayer intro display and defense damage reduction.

Soulbound versus DeltaCombat
DeltaCombat, by motojuster702, is the closest alternative in the same niche. It is a separate mod focused on spells, attack patterns and interactive encounters rather than Soulbound’s larger Soul-based progression framework.
| Category | Soulbound: Turnbattle | DeltaCombat |
|---|---|---|
| Loader | Fabric | Forge and NeoForge |
| Listed Minecraft versions | 1.20.1 and 1.21.1; 1.21.1 is the maintained target | 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 |
| Core identity | Soul, Graze, TP, Mercy/SPARE and broad RPG progression | Spell-based turn combat inspired by Undertale and Deltarune |
| Combat content | Classes, elements, skill tree, bestiary, multi-enemy fights and enemy soul mechanics | 24 unique spells, Deltarune-inspired weapons, patterns, dodging and dynamic interactions |
| Multiplayer information | Client-and-server support and cooperative battles | Not stated on the cited project description |
| Soul system | Included | Explicitly not included |
Choose Soulbound if you want the complete Soul/Graze/TP/Mercy layer, persistent progression and documented co-op support. Choose DeltaCombat if your priority is a spell-and-pattern combat system on Forge or NeoForge and you do not need the Soul mechanic.

How established is the project?
Platform counters captured in 2026 show 43,806 CurseForge downloads and 104.6K Modrinth downloads; both counters can change. CurseForge records a last update of August 3, 2026. These figures indicate active distribution, not an independent performance benchmark or a guarantee that every feature is finished.

If you are looking for a Minecraft mod that genuinely feels like Deltarune in battle, start with Soulbound: Turnbattle on Fabric for Java Edition 1.21.1. Its turn-based bullet hell, Soul mechanics, TP, Graze, Mercy choices and RPG progression make it a deeper overhaul than a simple combat replacement. DeltaCombat is the better alternative only when Forge/NeoForge compatibility or a spell-focused system matters more than the Soul layer.
