The Sámi were Indigenous communities of northern Fennoscandia whose economies, identities and political relationships varied by place. During the Viking Age, they encountered several different Norse-speaking communities through trade, tribute, travel, competition and cultural exchange—not through one uniform relationship of either friendship or conquest.

The evidence combines outsider-written accounts, archaeological finds and later literary traditions. Each source reveals something different, and none supports treating either “the Sámi” or “the Scandinavians” as a single, unchanging group.

What “Viking Age” and “Sámi” mean in this question

The Swedish History Museum uses approximately AD 750–1100 for its Viking Age exhibition, while noting that scholars draw the period boundaries differently. “Viking” was not an ethnic label. In Old Norse usage and modern scholarship, going Viking generally describes an activity—such as raiding, trading or overseas expeditions—rather than membership in one people. Communities in Scandinavia had different languages, political loyalties and regional economies.

The Sámi were Indigenous peoples living across the northern parts of what are now Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia’s Kola Peninsula. They were never a single centralized kingdom. Distinct communities used local languages and followed combinations of hunting, fishing, reindeer herding and farming suited to their environments. Some of these communities had clear links to later Sámi societies, but historians should not project a modern national or ethnic map unchanged onto the ninth or tenth centuries.

“Scandinavians” is similarly broad. A coastal community in northern Norway, a Swedish polity around the Gulf of Bothnia and a Danish kingdom had different interests. The most useful question is therefore not whether “the Vikings” and “the Sámi” got along, but which communities met, where, and under what economic or political conditions.

Where interaction happened

Contact zones stretched across northern coasts, river valleys, inland forests and mountain routes. Sámi hunters and fishers moved through territories rich in furs, bird feathers, marine products and other resources. Norse-speaking farmers, chiefs, merchants and seafarers connected those northern areas to settlements farther south and to markets around the North Atlantic and Baltic.

Movement did not require a permanent town or a formal border. A person could meet others at a seasonal camp, a coastal landing place, a market or a route linking the interior to the sea. Goods might pass through several intermediaries before reaching a regional ruler. Archaeologists therefore find evidence of networks rather than a single frontier separating two civilizations.

Regional variation mattered

Written material is especially uneven. Ohthere, a seafarer from northern Norway, described conditions in the late ninth century, but his report cannot stand for every Sámi community or every Scandinavian settlement. A claim about tribute in northern Norway should not be extended automatically to the entire Viking Age or to areas around the eastern Baltic and the Kola Peninsula.

Trade: the best-attested form of contact

Furs were valuable in long-distance exchange. Sámi hunting communities could supply animal skins and other northern products that were difficult for southern farmers to obtain. In return, they could receive grain, iron tools and other manufactured goods. A 2024 peer-reviewed study describes a Sámi network visible in the archaeological distribution of objects and interprets northern relations as developing among hunting groups, traders and tribute takers.

Exchange was not necessarily a simple direct bargain. A chief or merchant might collect products from several local communities, provide imported goods, and then transport high-value items to another market. Seasonal availability, weather and access to routes all affected what could be traded. A northern household might participate in exchange without being integrated into a Scandinavian political structure.

Trade did not erase inequality

Reciprocal exchange and unequal power could exist at the same time. A community might obtain iron through trade while also facing demands from a regional ruler. The ability to control a harbor, a river route or armed retainers could influence the terms of exchange. “Trade” should therefore describe the movement and negotiation of goods, not imply that every participant had equal bargaining power.

Ohthere’s account of tribute

The clearest written description comes from an Old English version of Orosius that preserves the account of Ohthere, a seafarer associated with northern Norway. The text says that “their revenue is greatest in the tribute which the Lapps pay to them” and lists skins, feathers, whale bones and ship cables among the goods. In this passage, “Lapps” is an older English term used for Sámi people; modern writing generally uses Sámi.

This is evidence that a ninth-century observer reported a tribute relationship. It does not tell us how many communities were involved, whether payments were voluntary, negotiated or enforced, or how often they were collected. Nor does it establish that every product listed came from the same locality. The account was written down in a textual tradition after the events it describes, so it should be read as a report by a particular speaker rather than a complete census of northern politics.

What “tribute” could mean

Tribute may indicate regular payments to a ruler in return for protection, access or recognition, or it may describe an exaction backed by force. The word in a translated text cannot by itself reconstruct the arrangement. Some transfers that look like tribute from a ruler’s viewpoint may have involved negotiated gifts, trading privileges or obligations between local leaders.

Political competition and changing power

Northern rulers sought wealth and influence, especially where control of resources or transport routes could strengthen a chiefdom. A Scandinavian leader’s interest in Sámi territory could involve collecting valuable products, recruiting knowledge of the landscape, securing a route or competing with another ruler. Sámi leaders likewise made choices about whom to trade with, support or resist.

Power was therefore relational rather than fixed. A group with superior local knowledge could control access to an inland route, while a coastal ruler could command ships and armed followers. The balance might shift with changing alliances, population movement or the rise of new centers farther south. Evidence does not support a single story in which Sámi communities were always autonomous, or always subordinated.

Cultural contact and shared practices

People met as well as goods. Archaeological studies identify routes, mixed material culture and hybrid burial practices in northern regions. Such findings show that techniques, objects and ideas crossed social boundaries. A tool made in one area could be used in another; a burial might combine practices associated with more than one tradition.

Material overlap does not automatically identify an individual’s ethnicity. Objects travel through trade, gift-giving, inheritance and reuse. A burial with mixed features could reflect a person’s life history, a family’s choices, a local religious practice or a community experimenting with new forms. Archaeology can establish contact and overlap more securely than it can prove a particular marriage, language or political status.

What hybrid evidence can and cannot show

  • It can show: movement along routes, adoption of foreign objects, shared craft practices and communities participating in connected networks.
  • It cannot show by itself: that a named ethnic group controlled a site, that two individuals married, or that one society replaced another.
  • It requires context: dating, the location of the find, associated objects and comparison with regional burial and settlement patterns.

Were the Sámi part of Viking society?

The answer depends on what “Viking society” means. If the phrase means a single ethnic civilization, it is misleading: no such uniform society existed. If it means the interconnected communities of the Viking Age, Sámi people were participants in those northern networks while retaining distinct languages, lifeways and local identities.

Some Sámi individuals may have traded with, worked for or negotiated with Scandinavian leaders. Others may have had little direct contact with coastal settlements. Participation in an exchange network did not require abandoning Sámi identity, just as a Norse merchant’s access to Sámi products did not make him Sámi.

Names in the written sources

Texts use labels such as Scritefini and Finnar. Their meanings and geographic ranges changed over time, and translators do not always use equivalent terms. A label in a medieval manuscript should therefore be interpreted alongside its date, language and context rather than treated as a precise ethnic census.

Later saga narratives contain memorable stories of marriages, alliances and encounters between Sámi and Scandinavian figures. These stories can preserve social ideas or memories of northern contact, but they were written later and are literary compositions. Unless independent evidence confirms an episode, it should not be presented as a verified contemporary event.

How historians weigh the evidence

Source type What it can reveal Main limitation
Contemporary or near-contemporary written reports What an author or informant said about tribute, travel, products or political relationships Limited viewpoint, translation issues and uncertain geographic scope
Archaeological objects and routes Movement of goods, technologies and people; participation in connected networks Objects do not automatically identify ethnicity, language or political status
Burials and settlement remains Changing practices and local combinations of material traditions Mixed features can have several explanations and need close dating
Later sagas and narratives Ideas about identity, memory, alliances and northern relationships Later literary texts are not transparent eyewitness records

Using these sources together prevents two opposite errors. It avoids accepting a ruler’s description of tribute as the whole social reality, and it avoids treating every imported object as proof of a specific ethnic identity. The strongest conclusions are those supported by more than one kind of evidence.

Common misconceptions

“The Sámi were simply conquered by the Vikings.”

The record is more varied. Tribute and political pressure appear in the written evidence, but trade, negotiation and mutual dependence also mattered. Different regions experienced different relationships, and the Viking Age lasted several centuries.

“The Sámi only supplied furs.”

Furs were important, yet the Ohthere account also mentions feathers, whale bones and ship cables. Sámi communities had diverse economies based on hunting, fishing, herding and other local activities. The surviving texts highlight commodities of interest to rulers and merchants, not every aspect of daily life.

“Any Scandinavian object found in the north proves a Scandinavian settlement.”

Imported objects can result from trade, gifts, travel or reuse. Distribution demonstrates connection, not necessarily migration or political control. Settlement claims require architectural, environmental and chronological evidence as well.

“Viking” and “Sámi” were mutually exclusive categories.

“Viking” describes an activity, while Sámi refers to Indigenous communities with their own identities. A Sámi person could participate in exchange with a raiding or trading expedition without becoming part of a supposed Viking ethnicity.

A careful answer to the title question

The Sámi were Indigenous northern communities organized in varied local societies. During the Viking Age, they interacted with Norse-speaking Scandinavians through interregional trade, the movement of furs and other goods, reported tribute, political competition, travel and cultural exchange. Some relationships were reciprocal; others involved unequal demands or attempts at extraction. Archaeology shows connected routes and blended practices, while written accounts such as Ohthere’s preserve particular viewpoints rather than a complete history.

The most defensible picture is dynamic and regional. Sámi and Scandinavian communities influenced one another without becoming a single society, and contact did not have one universal outcome. Reading the sources with attention to period, place and genre gives a fuller account than either a simple conquest narrative or an idealized story of peaceful commerce.
