For a honeybee cluster hanging in the open, call a local beekeeper who collects swarms. If bees are flying in and out of a hole in a wall, roof, soffit, chimney or another cavity, call someone who performs structural bee removal or a cut-out instead. Keep people and pets away, do not spray or disturb the bees, and send the provider a photo before anyone arrives.

There is no authoritative U.S.-wide removal price. A beekeeper may collect an open-air swarm for free, while another charges a service fee. Structural removals cost more because the worker may need to open the building, remove comb and residue, and seal the cavity. Ask for a written, local estimate that states exactly what is included.

First identify what you are looking at

The right call depends on whether the bees are temporarily clustered or have established a colony. Misclassifying the job can lead to the wrong equipment, an incomplete removal or an unexpected bill.

Open-air swarm

A swarm is a mass of honeybees clustered on a branch, fence, sign, vehicle or other exposed surface. It often forms when part of a colony leaves with a queen to establish a new home. The cluster may look alarming, but university and state guidance describes many clustered swarms as relatively docile or usually not dangerous. They are still stinging insects, so treat the area cautiously.

An open-air cluster is temporary. It may depart on its own, sometimes within hours. If it is safely away from people and animals, leaving it undisturbed is a reasonable option. If it is near a doorway, sidewalk, play area, roadway or other busy location, arrange collection promptly.

Established colony in a structure

Bees repeatedly entering and leaving a small opening in a wall, roofline, soffit, chimney or other cavity are more likely to be establishing or maintaining a colony. This is not a simple swarm pickup. The cavity can contain comb, honey, brood and residue that attract bees and other pests if left behind.

Ask specifically for structural bee removal, a cut-out or live colony removal. The work may require opening siding, drywall, roofing or another finish, extracting the bees and comb, cleaning the space, and sealing the entry. Repairs may be performed by the bee-removal specialist or may be your responsibility.

Who to call, in order

1. A local swarm-collecting beekeeper

Search for a beekeeper who explicitly says they collect honeybee swarms. Not every beekeeper provides this service; UGA Cooperative Extension notes that some do not collect swarms and that some charge a fee. A beekeeper may be able to capture and relocate an open-air cluster without opening a structure.

2. A beekeeping association

If you cannot find an individual collector quickly, contact a local or state beekeeping association. These groups often maintain member contacts or seasonal referral lists. Tell the coordinator the county or city, the height and location of the cluster, and whether the bees are exposed or entering a building.

3. County cooperative extension

Your county cooperative extension office can often point you to local beekeepers or explain the appropriate service for your area. Moore County, North Carolina, guidance specifically describes extension as a source for referrals. Extension lists are local and can become outdated, so confirm that a provider still serves your address and handles the type of job you have.

4. A structural-removal specialist

For bees inside a wall, roof, soffit or chimney, use a specialist who routinely performs cut-outs. A general pest-control company may offer eradication rather than live removal. Ask what method is proposed before authorizing work, particularly if preserving the colony matters to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Local directories and seasonal lists

Some states and counties publish lists of volunteer or paid swarm collectors. Delaware publishes separate 2026 lists for swarms and cut-outs, while K-State lists volunteer providers with different service areas and job types. Treat these directories as leads, not guarantees: verify the listing date, coverage area, response time and current availability before relying on a phone number.

What to do before anyone arrives

  1. Create distance. Keep children, pets, visitors and pedestrians away from the cluster or entrance. Close nearby windows and doors if bees are drifting indoors.
  2. Do not disturb the bees. Do not poke the cluster, shake the branch, use loud equipment, burn materials or spray insecticide. Disturbance can provoke defensive behavior and can scatter bees into a harder-to-remove location.
  3. Do not climb or open the structure. A ladder, roof or wall cavity adds fall, electrical, structural and stinging hazards. UF/IFAS advises untrained clients not to attempt colony removal.
  4. Take photographs from a safe distance. Include one wide image showing the surroundings and one closer image that does not require approaching the bees. Text or email the photos to the provider so they can judge access and bring suitable equipment.
  5. Note the behavior and location. Record when you first noticed the bees, whether they are clustered or entering a hole, the approximate height, and whether anyone has been stung. Mention narrow gates, fences, vegetation or other access limits.
  6. Call another collector if necessary. A swarm can leave within hours. If the first beekeeper does not answer, try another collector, an association or extension rather than waiting indefinitely.

Questions to ask on the phone

Use a consistent set of questions so estimates are comparable. Describe the job first: “There is a honeybee cluster on a [location]” or “Bees are entering a cavity at [location].” Then ask:

  • Do you handle open-air swarms, structural colonies, or both?
  • Are you offering live capture and relocation, eradication, or either option?
  • When can you arrive, and what should we do if the bees leave before then?
  • Is there a fee for this type of call? Is it a flat fee, an hourly charge, or dependent on access?
  • For a structural job, will you remove all bees, comb, honey and residue?
  • Will you seal the entry point? What materials and areas are covered?
  • Are vegetation trimming, roof access, ladders or specialized equipment extra?
  • Who handles drywall, siding, roofing, paint or other repairs after the cavity is opened?
  • Do local rules require a registration, license or other credential for the method you propose?
  • Can you provide the total estimate in writing, including possible additional charges?

Cornell guidance specifically recommends discussing timing, vegetation trimming and cost. UF/IFAS recommends clarifying removal of colony remains and any structural repair with the specialist you hire.

What honeybee removal costs

Open-air swarm collection

There is no authoritative nationwide price range in the public extension and government guidance reviewed for this topic. Some local guidance says many swarm collections may be free; other providers charge. UGA Cooperative Extension states that not all beekeepers collect swarms and that some may charge a fee. The practical answer is to ask each local collector rather than assume “free” or assume a standard rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Structural cut-outs

Structural work normally costs more than collecting a cluster because it can involve labor inside a building, removal of comb and residue, access equipment, sealing and coordination of repairs. The final amount depends on height, material, accessibility, colony size, damage and whether live relocation is requested.

A commercial provider’s guide dated May 15, 2026, estimates U.S. bee-removal jobs at $150–$600 and structural cut-outs at about $400–$1,500 or more. These are that business’s estimates, not a government or university survey and not a national average. Use them only as a rough context while obtaining a local quote.

Cost question What is established What you must confirm locally
Is swarm collection free? It may be free in some areas, but some beekeepers charge. Call-out fee, collection fee, travel charge and payment timing.
Is there a national price? No authoritative nationwide fee was identified. A written estimate for your address and job type.
Why does a cut-out cost more? It can require opening a cavity, extracting bees and comb, cleaning residue and sealing the entry. Labor, access equipment, disposal, sealing and repair responsibilities.
What does a published range mean? The $150–$600 and $400–$1,500+ figures are a May 15, 2026 commercial guide’s estimates. Whether the provider’s quote includes every task listed in that guide.

How to compare providers fairly

Compare like with like. A low quote for an exposed swarm is not comparable with a quote to open a two-story wall and remove a colony. Ask each provider to address the same scope:

  1. Job type: open-air swarm collection or established-colony cut-out.
  2. Access: ground level, ladder height, roof access, crawlspace, interior finish and obstacles.
  3. Response time: immediate, same day, next day or scheduled visit. A swarm may depart while you wait.
  4. Removal method: live capture and relocation, eradication, or another clearly described method.
  5. Contents removed: bees, queen, comb, honey, brood, dead material and contaminated insulation where applicable.
  6. Cleanup and sealing: residue removal and closure of every entry point that the work exposes or identifies.
  7. Repairs: drywall, siding, roofing, masonry, paint and trim, including who hires and pays the repair contractor.
  8. Total price: the base charge, travel, vegetation trimming, equipment, taxes and conditions that could increase the bill.

Request the estimate in writing, even if it is sent by text message. Keep photos, the scope description and the provider’s name with the quote so you can identify what changed if additional work is proposed.

Live relocation, eradication and local rules

Tell the provider whether your priority is live relocation or simply eliminating the hazard. A beekeeper who collects swarms may be equipped for live capture, while a licensed pest-control operator may handle eradication. The available options depend on local providers, building conditions and law.

Florida illustrates why the legal answer cannot be generalized nationwide. UF/IFAS describes registered beekeepers performing live removals and licensed pest-control operators performing eradication. That is a Florida-specific regulatory example, not a rule for every state. Check your city, county or state requirements and ask the provider which credential applies to the method being used.

For structural work, ask how the colony remains will be handled. Leaving comb and honey in an opened cavity can create odor, leakage or renewed pest activity. UF/IFAS advises discussing removal of colony remains and any structural repair with the hired specialist.

When waiting is reasonable—and when it is not

You may be able to wait

Waiting can be reasonable when the cluster is outdoors, away from doors and traffic, and no one in the household has a serious sting allergy. Keep the area isolated and monitor from a distance. A temporary swarm may move on without intervention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arrange prompt removal

Call promptly when the cluster is near a frequently used entrance, playground, pet area, public walkway or work site; when bees are entering a building; when someone has already been stung; or when you cannot keep people away. A structural colony should not be treated as a wait-and-see swarm because the bees and comb remain in the cavity.

Seek urgent medical help for severe reactions

If anyone develops trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, faintness or other signs of a severe allergic reaction after a sting, use the person’s prescribed emergency medication if available and contact emergency medical services. Removal decisions come after the immediate medical emergency is addressed.

A simple call script

“I need help with honeybees in [city or county]. They are [clustered on a branch/fence or entering a hole in a wall/roof]. The location is about [height] and access is [describe gate, ladder or vegetation]. I can send photos. Do you handle this type of job, can you do live removal, when could you arrive, and what would the complete price include? For a structural removal, please specify whether comb and residue removal, sealing and repairs are included.”

Key takeaways

  • For a free-standing honeybee swarm, start with a local swarm-collecting beekeeper; use a beekeeping association or county extension office for referrals.
  • Bees repeatedly entering a wall, roof, soffit or chimney need a structural-removal specialist, not an ordinary swarm pickup.
  • No universal U.S. fee exists. Collection may be free or paid, and structural work requires a local written estimate.
  • Keep people and pets away, do not spray or disturb the bees, and send a safe-distance photo to the provider.
  • Before authorizing a cut-out, settle the method, credentials where applicable, cleanup, cavity sealing, repairs and the total price.
