In a hosted setup, the game studio or publisher usually pays the AI provider through its account. That does not mean the publisher permanently bears every dollar: it may absorb inference as an operating expense, recover it through game revenue, or charge players through AI credits. Local inference replaces recurring API charges with hardware, engineering and maintenance costs. There is no reliable industry statistic showing what percentage of free-to-play AI inference is ultimately paid by publishers, players or advertisers.

The invoice holder is not always the ultimate economic payer

“Free-to-play” describes what the player pays to access the game. It does not describe the operator’s cost base. A player can install and play without paying while the publisher receives a recurring bill for model calls, speech recognition, image generation or other AI services.

Three separate questions prevent confusion:

  • Who holds the service account? Usually the developer, publisher or a middleware operator.
  • Who is charged for each unit of use? The account owner, a player balance, or a license and revenue-share arrangement.
  • Where does the money ultimately come from? The operator’s general revenue, direct player purchases, advertising, investment or another part of the game economy.

A publisher can therefore be the immediate payer without treating every inference call as a separately monetized purchase. Conversely, a player can fund AI credits directly while the studio still pays a platform fee or maintains the integration.

Four ways AI inference can be funded

1. The studio or publisher pays from its account

This is the clearest documented pattern for a hosted service. PlayKit’s Credits & Costs documentation describes account billing, where AI costs are charged to the game’s account and the feature is free to players within that billing system. Its examples include casual games and titles that do not need a monetization requirement for the AI feature.

Under this model, player activity still drives the bill. More conversations, longer voice interactions or additional generations can increase consumption, but the player does not see a separate charge at the moment of use. The operator may regard the expense as part of live-service operations, just as it does hosting, customer support or analytics.

Account billing does not prove that the feature is profitable on its own. The publisher may be using AI to improve retention, differentiate the game or support a premium layer elsewhere in the economy.

2. Players pay through credits or optional purchases

PlayKit also documents player billing. In that arrangement, AI costs are charged to an individual player’s balance. The service describes a small daily credit refresh and optional in-app purchases, intended for games where AI use scales with engagement and the developer wants to offset infrastructure costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayKit states that its calls can be token-priced, call-priced or hybrid, depending on the capability. A player may receive a limited allowance, spend earned credits, or buy more. The game can place boundaries around expensive features, such as longer conversations, higher-quality speech or image generation.

This is evidence that direct player-funded designs exist; it is not evidence that they are the dominant model across free-to-play games. A player-billing system also does not make the provider disappear from the economics. The game operator still has to integrate the service, manage abuse and account for any platform or licensing fees.

3. The wider game business indirectly funds inference

Even when no player buys an AI credit, inference can be funded by the game’s overall revenue. That may include cosmetic purchases, subscriptions, battle passes or other paid features. In this case, AI is an operating cost supported by the same business that pays for servers and development.

Advertising is another possible source of indirect funding. Google Cloud describes personalized in-game advertising and offers as monetization possibilities, including demonstrations that use player and purchase data. That material does not quantify advertising revenue, identify a commercial game’s exact ad yield or connect a particular advertisement to a particular model call. It is therefore more accurate to say ads can help support inference than to claim that an ad pays for a specific conversation.

Revenue recovery is a business decision, not a property of the model. A studio may accept an inference cost because it expects higher retention, more purchases or longer sessions, but those effects must be measured separately from the provider invoice.

4. Middleware or an infrastructure owner charges the operator

A game may not call a model provider directly. Middleware can supply orchestration, safety controls, memory, voice handling or non-player-character tools. The middleware company may charge a software license, usage fee or a percentage of game revenue. The game operator remains responsible for deciding whether to absorb that charge or recover it elsewhere.

Eposyne’s July 2026 comparison describes three broad cost structures: cloud NPC platforms charge for usage; a self-built local stack requires engineering time up front and ongoing maintenance; and on-device middleware can use a license tied to game revenue. Its October 8, 2026 update says the native on-device SDK was not yet available and that its current beta was hosted. That distinction matters: a revenue-linked on-device design is an architectural option in the comparison, not proof that a currently shipped SDK offers it.

What creates the variable bill?

The billing unit determines how quickly costs grow as players use an AI feature. The following distinctions are more useful than asking only whether a game “uses AI.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Capability or arrangement Possible billing unit What makes the cost rise
Text generation or conversation Tokens, calls or a hybrid Number of requests, prompt and response length, model choice and concurrency
Speech recognition Tokens or another usage measure, depending on the service Voice duration, transcription volume and simultaneous sessions
Image or 3D generation Calls, with capability-specific pricing Number of generations, quality settings and retries
Hosted GPU serving GPU time or an equivalent capacity charge Model size, traffic peaks, allocated capacity and utilization
Middleware License, usage fee or revenue share Contract terms, active players, calls or game revenue
Local or on-device model No per-call cloud invoice Engineering, hardware, updates, support, power and minimum device capability

PlayKit’s documentation explicitly distinguishes token-priced text and speech recognition from call-priced image and 3D generation, while noting that some capabilities use hybrid pricing. A studio must therefore map every AI feature to its actual metering rule instead of applying one average “cost per conversation.”

Cloud, self-hosted and on-device deployment have different cost shapes

Managed cloud inference

With a managed service, the provider operates the model-serving layer and the game operator pays according to the account’s plan and usage. The financial pattern is recurring and activity-sensitive. Traffic spikes during launches, events or popular time zones can require additional capacity, while idle capacity may still cost money under some reservation arrangements.

Google Cloud’s February 2024 game material describes serving models with Vertex AI and deploying models alongside game servers on Google Kubernetes Engine. That demonstrates a viable way to keep inference near live-game infrastructure, but it is a provider’s description of its own products, not an independent total-cost comparison.

Managed cloud reduces the amount of infrastructure the studio must build, but it does not eliminate operational work. The operator still needs quotas, latency controls, prompt and output limits, monitoring, abuse prevention and a plan for provider outages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Self-hosted cloud or a private cluster

A studio can run an open or licensed model on infrastructure it controls. This shifts the invoice from an API meter to servers, GPUs, storage, networking and staff time. The cost still scales with player demand: the operator must provision enough capacity for peaks without leaving expensive hardware unused during quiet periods.

Inworld AI reported public NVIDIA B200 list rates across clouds of $3.49 to $14.24 per GPU-hour in April 2026. This is a GPU-hour list-rate range, not a cost per player, conversation or game. It cannot be converted into a player estimate without assumptions about model size, batching, utilization, uptime, context length and traffic.

Self-hosting can make sense when a game has predictable, sustained demand or needs control over model placement and data. It can be a poor fit when demand is highly seasonal or when the team lacks the specialists needed to tune serving and reliability.

On-device inference

Running a model on a player’s PC, console or phone avoids a metered cloud conversation for that device. The economic burden moves to model optimization, compatibility testing, patch size, memory requirements, battery or power use, customer support and the hardware floor the game can accept.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On-device execution also changes the product constraints. A larger model may not fit within the target device’s memory, and weaker hardware can increase latency. Offline capability may improve resilience, but synchronization, cheating risks and content updates still require design work.

Do not describe a vendor’s on-device feature as generally available when its own October 8, 2026 update says the native SDK is not yet available. Separate a deployment strategy that a studio could build from a product that developers can download today.

Hybrid deployment

A hybrid design can reserve cloud calls for complex tasks and keep cheaper or less sensitive work local. For example, a small local model might handle routine reactions while cloud inference handles long-form dialogue. Hybrid systems can reduce peak cloud usage, but they add routing logic, two failure modes and more testing across devices and network conditions.

How to identify who pays in a real game

  1. Trace the account. Identify which legal entity owns the model, speech or middleware account. That entity receives the initial invoice.
  2. Read the metering rule. Record whether usage is measured in tokens, calls, minutes, GPU time, reserved capacity or a license percentage.
  3. Check the player wallet. Look for daily allowances, earned credits, paid AI currency or a separate purchase flow. A free daily allowance does not mean the underlying call is free to the operator.
  4. Map deployment. Determine whether requests run in a provider’s cloud, the publisher’s cluster, a game-server environment, on the player’s device or across more than one location.
  5. Separate revenue sources. List direct AI purchases, general in-game purchases, subscriptions and advertising as distinct lines. Do not treat a possible ad impression as proof of one-to-one reimbursement.
  6. Model peak demand. Use expected concurrent sessions, request length, model selection and event spikes. A monthly average can hide capacity costs during a launch.
  7. Assign non-invoice work. Include engineering, moderation, monitoring, model updates, customer support and hardware replacement. These costs determine who ultimately bears the deployment even when no API invoice appears.

Common mistakes when discussing payment

“Free-to-play means the player pays nothing”

It means the player is not charged an upfront access price. Players may still buy items, subscriptions or AI credits, and their engagement can generate advertising value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The publisher pays, so the AI feature is free”

The feature may be free at the user interface while producing a variable operating expense. Account billing only identifies who is charged by the service; it does not remove the cost.

“Advertising pays for each inference call”

Advertising can be part of a game’s funding mix. Available provider material presents it as a monetization possibility, not as a measured per-call reimbursement mechanism.

“A GPU-hour price is a conversation price”

It is not. GPU-hour rates need workload and utilization assumptions before they can inform a game budget. The April 2026 B200 figures are infrastructure list rates, not player-level economics.

“On-device means zero cost”

It removes or reduces a hosted inference charge but introduces development, testing, support, hardware and update costs. Those expenses can be substantial for a live game with many supported devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision framework for studios

Priority Usually favors Trade-off to examine
Fast launch with limited infrastructure staff Managed cloud or hosted middleware Recurring usage charges, quotas and provider dependency
Predictable, sustained high utilization Self-hosted serving Up-front hardware, operations and peak-capacity planning
Minimal network dependence On-device or hybrid Device requirements, model size, updates and support burden
Players should fund unusually heavy AI use Player credits or metered features Conversion friction, wallet design and fairness concerns
AI should remain invisible to the player Account billing funded by the wider game economy No direct recovery and greater exposure to usage spikes

The right question is not simply “Who pays for the AI?” It is “Which party is charged at each layer, which activity causes that charge, and what revenue or budget line is intended to cover it?” A complete answer may name the publisher as the invoice holder, players as optional direct contributors, advertisers as an indirect revenue source and the engineering team as the bearer of local-inference costs.

What can be stated about the market—and what cannot

Documented billing modes show that both publisher-paid and player-paid arrangements are possible. Deployment comparisons show why cloud, self-hosted, on-device and hybrid systems produce different financial obligations. They do not establish a representative market-wide split.

No reliable statistic in the available material says what percentage of free-to-play inference is paid by publishers, players, advertisers or infrastructure providers. Any precise percentage would imply a level of industry measurement that has not been demonstrated. For a specific game, the defensible answer comes from its service contract, wallet rules, deployment architecture and financial reporting—not from the fact that the game is labeled free-to-play.
