No—Walmart does not own Straight Talk. Verizon owns Straight Talk through its acquisition of TracFone Wireless, which closed on November 23, 2021. Walmart’s retail association with the prepaid brand—and the separate Walmart Family Mobile name—can make the relationship confusing.
Who owns Straight Talk?
Straight Talk is part of TracFone Wireless’s family of brands, which Verizon acquired. Verizon’s 2021 Form 10-K says the company acquired all outstanding TracFone stock when the transaction closed on November 23, 2021. Verizon’s announcement of the completed acquisition also names Straight Talk among the acquired brands.
Why is Straight Talk associated with Walmart?
Walmart’s retail association with Straight Talk can make it seem like Walmart owns the service. A separate source of confusion is Walmart Family Mobile, another prepaid brand. The FCC identified Straight Talk and Walmart Family Mobile separately among TracFone’s prepaid brands; that listing does not identify Walmart as Straight Talk’s owner. The FCC’s 2021 order also describes TracFone as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), a service provider that uses networks operated by mobile network operators.
How the ownership changed
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| September 2020 | Verizon entered into an agreement with América Móvil to acquire TracFone, according to Verizon’s filing. |
| November 23, 2021 | Verizon completed the acquisition and acquired all outstanding TracFone stock. Straight Talk was among TracFone’s acquired brands. |
These details are documented in Verizon’s 2021 Form 10-K and its acquisition announcement.

Does the brand still offer wireless service?
Straight Talk’s official website lists prepaid plans and phones. That confirms the brand remains active on its site; it does not alter who owns it. A brand owner and the company operating the underlying mobile network are different things: TracFone’s MVNO model used networks operated by mobile network operators.
For context, the FCC’s 2021 order reported that TracFone said its brands served more than 20 million U.S. prepaid wireless customers in 2020. That was a company-reported historical figure, not a current subscriber count.
