Short answer: Ledger says a criminal group bought genuine hardware wallets, opened them, installed hidden components intended to capture recovery phrases during setup, and returned the devices to circulation through resellers in Southeast Asia. The public disclosure does not identify the perpetrators. Ledger characterizes it as a localized distribution attack—not a compromise of its core firmware, chips, or servers.
What happened before some wallets reached customers
The incident exploited custody after legitimate manufacturing, rather than requiring counterfeit hardware or a flaw in Ledger’s core software. According to Ledger’s account, the group purchased genuine devices over a period of months, opened them, fitted concealed components designed to capture a recovery phrase as it was entered during setup, and placed the devices back into distribution through Southeast Asian resellers.
Ledger’s exact description is: “This was not a systemic supply chain attack, it was a localized distribution attack.” That distinction matters. A device can be authentic and still have been physically altered after leaving factory control. Authentic branding, a valid serial number, and working firmware do not by themselves establish an untouched chain of custody.

Who was responsible?
Ledger has described the activity and its method but has not publicly named individual perpetrators. The available account identifies a criminal group and a distribution route, not specific people or a confirmed organization. Claims that assign names without official evidence should be treated as speculation.

Can a genuine Ledger or Trezor arrive compromised?
Yes, in principle. Physical modification is different from counterfeiting: the device may be a genuine product that was opened and altered before resale. Trezor’s security model explicitly considers physical and supply-chain attacks, which is why the seller, packaging, setup process, and response to anomalies all matter.
This does not mean most devices are compromised, and no general prevalence rate or independently verified industry-wide loss total has been established. It does mean that buyers should not treat a marketplace listing or a familiar logo as proof of an intact supply chain.

Why seals and authenticity checks are not enough
Genuine Check proves authenticity, not custody
Ledger says its Genuine Check can confirm that a device is authentic, but it cannot reconstruct everywhere the product has been or determine whether someone opened it and installed an extra component before you received it.
Holographic seals can be defeated
Ledger Donjon has warned that classic holographic and other anti-tampering seals can be cloned or bypassed. An attacker who opens a package carefully may be able to reseal it so that a visual inspection appears normal. A seal is useful evidence, but it is not a cryptographic guarantee that the box was never opened.

The strongest warning signs are behavioral
Reject a wallet that is already onboarded, asks you to use a recovery phrase supplied in the box, includes a pre-set PIN, or presents account details before you have completed setup. The most dangerous pre-seeding signal is a recovery phrase or PIN provided by someone else.
What to do when a package looks wrong
- Stop immediately. Do not complete setup, connect the device to a wallet application, or transfer funds.
- Do not use the supplied recovery phrase. Never type it into Ledger Wallet, Trezor software, a website, a phone, or a computer. A phrase that arrived with the product must be considered exposed.
- Document the condition. Photograph the box, seals, labels, device, inserts, and shipping materials. Keep everything, including the outer packaging and return paperwork.
- Contact official support. Use the manufacturer’s official website, not a phone number or QR code printed on an unexpected insert. Trezor’s Safe 3 guidance likewise says to inspect the expected seal and contents and contact support if anything seems unusual.
- Return or replace through the proper channel. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and preserve the evidence until the case is resolved.
If you already initialized the device with a supplied seed, assume the accounts are controlled by whoever saw that seed. Move assets to a newly generated wallet whose recovery phrase is created on a trusted device, following the manufacturer’s official recovery and transfer instructions. Do not fund an account created from a pre-written seed.

How to set up a new hardware wallet safely
- Buy from the manufacturer’s store or a verified authorized reseller. Authorization should be checked independently, rather than inferred from a marketplace badge.
- Inspect the shipping box, product box, seals, device condition, and included materials before connecting anything.
- Start initialization yourself. The device—not the seller, box, email, or application—must generate the recovery phrase.
- Write the phrase down privately and in the order shown on the device. Never photograph it, store it in cloud notes, or enter it into a website.
- Choose your own PIN on the device. Reject any device that arrives with one already selected.
- Complete the manufacturer’s authenticity check, treating it as an authenticity signal rather than proof of an untouched supply chain.
- Before sending significant funds, verify a receiving address on the device’s screen and perform a small test transfer.
Is buying a hardware wallet on Amazon safe?
A marketplace can be safe only when the specific seller is verified and the manufacturer’s return and support process still applies. “Sold on Amazon” is not the same as “sold by the manufacturer” or an authorized reseller. Third-party inventory can be commingled, returned, resealed, or stored and shipped through channels you cannot independently audit.
If a marketplace purchase arrives opened, pre-initialized, or with a seed or PIN, do not try to salvage it. Photograph it, stop setup, and contact the manufacturer and the marketplace through their official support paths. For high-value holdings, direct manufacturer sales or a reseller listed by the manufacturer provide a clearer chain of accountability.
Quick Recap
What to compare when choosing a wallet
| Security question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Official sourcing and reseller controls | Reduces the number of parties that can handle returned or diverted stock. |
| Recovery phrase generation | The phrase should be generated during your setup on the device, never supplied in advance. |
| Device attestation and authenticity checks | Can help identify genuine hardware, but cannot prove an untouched physical history. |
| Tamper evidence and return-stock rules | Clear packaging standards and controlled returns make anomalies easier to detect and investigate. |
| Incident response and support | Fast, official guidance matters when packaging, setup, or a device does not match expectations. |
