There is no officially confirmed winner between Beru and Igris in a matched, peak-strength duel. The most defensible reading depends on the point in the story and what “stronger” means. Beru has the clearest evidence for overwhelming physical power, speed, durability and unusual abilities. Igris has elite swordsmanship, extensive combat experience and a major restoration of his original power after Jinwoo unlocks his full Shadow Monarch abilities. If you compare early versions, Beru has the stronger case. If you compare their later, restored forms, the result is an interpretation rather than a settled canon fact.
This distinction matters because both shadows change over time. Treating an early battle performance, a later promotion and restored strength as one timeless ranking produces a misleading answer—especially for readers who have only seen the anime.

What the official material actually establishes
Netmarble’s official Solo Leveling: KARMA character material identifies Igris as the first shadow Jinwoo named. It also states that Igris regains his original strength after Jinwoo unlocks his full Shadow Monarch abilities. That is a significant late-story development: Igris is not limited to the level he displayed when he was first introduced.
The same official material describes Beru’s origin differently. He began as the Ant Queen’s strongest magic beast and became a shadow only after Jinwoo defeated him. Netmarble’s official Solo Leveling: ARISE announcement further describes Beru as the original work’s first General-rank shadow and notes that promotion to General rank enhances a shadow’s abilities and adds a skill.

Why the answer changes with the story stage
Early-story Beru versus early-story Igris
Beru enters the story as the Ant Queen’s strongest magic beast, so his baseline physical threat is exceptionally high. His portrayal emphasizes the qualities that decide a short, violent encounter: force, speed, resilience and the ability to keep attacking after taking damage.
Igris’s first major identity is that of a master swordsman and Jinwoo’s first named shadow. At this stage, his strongest advantage is technical rather than purely physical. He can read an opponent, control distance and punish openings with a blade. However, judging him only by that first appearance ignores the later statement that his original strength is eventually restored.

Rank #2
Beru after becoming a shadow
Beru’s defeat by Jinwoo changes his role from independent magic beast to shadow. The official rank description is important here: he is identified as the first General-rank shadow in the original work. The promotion context also matters, because General rank is described as improving a shadow’s abilities and adding a skill.
That does not provide a numerical power level or prove that every General-rank shadow automatically defeats every lower-ranked shadow. It does show that Beru’s post-defeat form should not be treated as identical to the creature Jinwoo first fought. His capabilities are part of an evolving system, and the stage of that evolution must be named before making a comparison.
Igris after Jinwoo’s full awakening
Igris has an equally important late-story qualification. Netmarble’s official character description says that he regains his original strength after Jinwoo unlocks his full Shadow Monarch abilities. In other words, the version first seen by viewers is not necessarily the final measure of Igris’s power.

The phrase “original strength” is more informative than a simple level label: it signals restoration of a prior state rather than an ordinary incremental upgrade. The official description does not, however, attach a direct statement saying that restored Igris is stronger than Beru. That missing comparison is why a peak-versus-peak answer remains interpretive.
Rank #3
What “stronger” can mean in this matchup
People asking “Who is stronger, Igris or Beru?” may be asking several different questions. Separating them prevents a character’s best attribute from being mistaken for an absolute ranking.
| Comparison axis | Beru | Igris | Careful conclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw physical power | Official descriptions establish him as the Ant Queen’s strongest magic beast; secondary references emphasize immense strength, speed and durability. | Strong, but official material foregrounds his restored original power and swordsmanship rather than a direct physical comparison. | Beru has the clearer evidence-based advantage in raw physical threat. |
| Swordsmanship | His profile is built around a magic beast’s physical and special abilities, not a formal sword-fighting specialty. | He is presented as a master swordsman with substantial combat experience. | Igris has the clearer technical advantage with a blade. |
| Special abilities | Secondary references describe regeneration and additional abilities; treat those details as fan-maintained material unless confirmed in the licensed scene. | Official material confirms restored original strength, but does not list a complete matchup-specific ability set. | Beru may have greater variety, but the evidence does not establish a decisive interaction between their abilities. |
| Rank context | Officially identified as the original work’s first General-rank shadow. | Official material says his original strength returns; fan-maintained summaries use additional rank labels that are not a substitute for a primary-text verdict. | Ranks provide context, not an automatic answer. |
| Likely duel outcome | No official source reviewed gives a win over Igris. | No official source reviewed gives a win over Beru. | Any winner is an argued interpretation tied to a stated version and ruleset. |
How the duel could play out
If the fight is decided quickly
A short, open exchange favors Beru’s profile. His physical power, speed and durability could let him force Igris backward before a technical strategy develops. If Beru’s regeneration and other abilities are available in the version being compared, Igris may need several clean, decisive strikes rather than one ordinary hit.
This is not proof that Beru wins every quick fight. It is a matchup argument: the fighter with greater immediate pressure benefits when there is little time to study patterns or change tactics.

If the fight becomes a technical contest
A prolonged duel gives Igris’s swordsmanship more room to matter. A master swordsman can win exchanges without matching an opponent’s raw force by controlling angles, timing attacks and targeting openings. Combat experience may also help Igris recognize when Beru is committing to a charge or relying on a repeatable pattern.
Rank #4
That advantage has limits. Technical superiority does not guarantee a finishing blow against an opponent whose durability or regeneration is substantially higher. Igris would need his restored strength to support the swordplay, not merely his earlier version’s technique.
If both are compared at late-story strength
This is the hardest version to rank responsibly. Beru has the strongest official rank evidence, while Igris has explicit confirmation that his original strength returns. Because the official material does not place those two statements in a direct hierarchy, claims such as “Beru is canonically twice as strong” or “Igris definitely wins at full power” go beyond the evidence.
A reasonable interpretation can still be made. Readers who weight physical output, durability and special abilities most heavily will generally favor Beru. Readers who weight restored power, swordsmanship and tactical execution may favor Igris. Neither position should be presented as an official declaration.

Canon evidence versus fan-maintained profiles
Fan-maintained Beru and Igris pages are useful indexes for collecting commonly discussed traits, but they are secondary references. They may combine scenes from different translations, editions or adaptation stages, and a label on a wiki page does not itself establish a canon ranking.
Best Value
Use those pages to locate a scene, then verify the underlying chapter, episode or licensed material before treating a detail as definitive. This is especially important for claims about exact ranks, regeneration limits, comparative speed or the order of abilities. The available official pages support broad character context; they do not supply a complete stat sheet.
Anime-only readers: identify your spoiler boundary
The comparison includes developments beyond the characters’ first introductions, including Igris’s restored power. If you are writing or discussing the matchup for an anime-only audience, say so before naming that development. An answer based only on the first animated appearances is answering a different question from one based on the complete known story.
Adaptation context can also change what a reader has seen. A game’s licensed character summary may describe a later status even when an anime season has not reached that point. Do not use a game-page description as evidence that a particular scene has already appeared in the adaptation a reader is watching.

- Name the versions. Specify early Beru and early Igris, post-promotion Beru, restored Igris, or both at their latest established states.
- Set the rules. Decide whether the duel is to incapacitation, destruction, surrender or removal from the battlefield, and whether outside commands or reinforcements are allowed.
- Choose the axis. Separate raw power, swordsmanship, special abilities, adaptability and likely duel outcome instead of treating them as one statistic.
- Use primary evidence first. Start with official character descriptions and licensed scenes. Use fan references only as pointers to material that still needs verification.
- Label the conclusion. Say “my matchup reading” or equivalent when the source material does not provide a direct winner. Do not attribute that conclusion to Netmarble or to canon.
Bottom line on Beru versus Igris
Beru is the safer pick for greater raw physical and special-ability threat, particularly when discussing his identity as the Ant Queen’s strongest magic beast and his later General-rank status. Igris is the stronger technical swordsman, and his restoration of original strength means his first appearance is not a fair measure of his eventual ceiling.
For an early-story fight, favoring Beru is a coherent interpretation. For a late-story, peak-strength fight, the evidence supports an argument but not a canonical verdict. The most accurate answer is therefore: Beru likely has the physical edge, Igris has the technical edge, and the official material does not settle which one wins a matched duel.
