Sigma is Dr. Siebren de Kuiper, an astrophysicist whose attempt to harness gravity went catastrophically wrong. The experiment briefly created a black hole, left him with the ability to control gravity, and caused serious psychological damage. After years in detention as Subject Sigma, he came under Talon’s influence.
Who is Sigma in Overwatch?
Sigma’s real name is Dr. Siebren de Kuiper. Blizzard describes him as a celebrated astrophysicist and pioneer who studied how to harness gravity, doing much of his research in a laboratory in The Hague. His official hero biography summarizes the turning point: “Brilliant astrophysicist Dr. Siebren de Kuiper’s life changed forever when an experiment gone wrong gave him the ability to control gravity; now, Talon manipulates him to their own ends.” (Blizzard’s Sigma hero page)
What happened in Sigma’s black-hole experiment?
Believing he was close to controlling gravity, de Kuiper conducted his most important experiment on an international space station. The experiment briefly formed a black hole. Blizzard’s account says he was exposed for only a moment, but suffered serious psychological damage; gravity around him began fluctuating in time with his reactions, and he had to be evacuated. Why was he called Subject Sigma?
After the incident, de Kuiper’s ravings about patterns in the universe, nonlinear time, and gravitic anomalies led to years of detention under the designation Subject Sigma. Blizzard describes the resulting condition as serious psychological damage and difficulty maintaining a connection to reality; it does not provide a clinical diagnosis or specify the duration of his detention.
How did Talon get involved?
Sigma’s story places him in the present conflict as someone Talon manipulates, while he struggles to maintain his connection to reality. The official biography establishes that exploitation, but does not detail the exact circumstances of Talon’s recruitment or every motive behind its interest in him. Its central implication is clear: Sigma’s gravity-control powers make him useful to the organization, while his compromised grasp on reality leaves him vulnerable to its influence.

How Sigma’s story connects to his abilities
Blizzard classifies Sigma as a Tank and lists five abilities on his hero page. Their shared gravity-and-control theme makes a natural connection to his biography. That connection is an interpretation of how the kit reads; Blizzard’s ability descriptions do not assign each move a specific psychological meaning.
| Ability | Blizzard’s description | Connection to the story |
|---|---|---|
| Hyperspheres | Two charges that implode after a short duration and deal area damage. | The implosions evoke the destructive force of the experiment, though the game does not say they recreate the black hole. |
| Kinetic Grasp | Absorbs projectiles in front of Sigma and converts them into extra health. | It presents gravity as a force that can redirect incoming threats into protection. |
| Accretion | Sigma gathers debris and throws it at an enemy, knocking them down. | Gathering and hurling matter is a direct gameplay expression of his control over physical forces. |
| Experimental Barrier | A floating barrier that Sigma can propel, stop, and recall. | Its precise movement suggests controlled manipulation of space around him. |
| Gravitic Flux | Lifts enemies into the air and slams them back down. | It makes his command of gravity most visible, turning lift and falling into an attack. |
