Sephiroth is a legendary former SOLDIER: 1st Class who was once hailed as a hero. After he was believed to have died at Nibelheim, he reappears as Cloud Strife’s nemesis and a threat to the planet. Spoilers: This explainer covers his presumed death, his return, the Jenova specimen, and his stated goal, as described in Square Enix’s official FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH character profile and series overview.

Who is Sephiroth?

Sephiroth is one of the central antagonists in Final Fantasy VII. Square Enix describes him as a legendary member of SOLDIER, Shinra’s elite fighting force, and says he was once hailed as a hero. The FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH character profile specifies that he was a SOLDIER: 1st Class. In other words, he is not introduced as an unknown enemy: he already has a celebrated reputation before the events that make him Cloud Strife’s adversary.

That contrast is key to understanding his role. The official overview presents a former hero who vanished during a mission and later returned in a way that puts Cloud, his companions, and the planet in danger. His past standing helps explain why his return matters beyond one personal rivalry: he is an exceptionally powerful warrior with a history and reputation that precede the party’s pursuit.

The description “once hailed as a hero” is also an important part of the short answer. Sephiroth is not simply identified as a villain from the beginning of the story. The official account establishes a change in how he is regarded: he had a heroic reputation, disappeared, and later became the figure Cloud and the party pursue. That before-and-after contrast gives the character explainer its basic shape without requiring a detailed account of every event in his past.

His title and status should be stated precisely. The series overview calls him a legendary SOLDIER; the REBIRTH profile identifies him as a former SOLDIER: 1st Class. Those descriptions establish that he belonged to Shinra’s elite fighting force and was regarded as exceptionally powerful. They do not provide a numerical measure of his abilities or a ranking against every other character.

What happened to Sephiroth at Nibelheim?

Square Enix’s REBIRTH profile says Sephiroth was believed to have died in the line of duty at Nibelheim. The official series overview describes him as having vanished without a trace during a routine mission five years earlier. These are story-timeline references: the five years mark the gap in the fictional events, not a real-world date.

The same profile makes clear that the belief in his death was wrong. He reappears at the Shinra Building and takes the Jenova specimen. That is the firm outline the official character summary provides: presumed death at Nibelheim, later appearance at Shinra, and the stolen specimen. It does not, by itself, give a complete account of what happened during the Nibelheim incident or explain every cause and consequence. Readers looking for the full incident should treat this short profile as a setup, not a complete retelling.

So, what can be said about Nibelheim without filling in gaps? Sephiroth was on a mission there, and the people around him believed he had died in the line of duty. The series overview adds that he disappeared without a trace five years before the events it summarizes. Later, his appearance at the Shinra Building disproves the assumption that he was dead. The profile links that return to his taking the Jenova specimen, but it does not tell the whole story of how the Nibelheim incident unfolded.

The five-year reference is easy to misread if it is separated from the story. It describes the fictional interval between the mission and the events summarized by Square Enix, not a date in the real world and not a claim that five years have passed since the game was released. When describing the chronology, keep it attached to the game’s setup: Sephiroth was believed to have died or vanished five years earlier, then returns to the story’s present.

Why is Sephiroth Cloud’s enemy?

Square Enix calls Sephiroth Cloud’s nemesis. In REBIRTH’s official framing, Cloud and the group leave Midgar in pursuit of Sephiroth and the truth. This makes the conflict both personal and larger than Cloud alone: the party is following the person who has returned after being presumed dead, while trying to understand what his actions mean.

The broader story supplies the stakes. Square Enix’s official series overview describes Shinra as holding a monopoly on mako, energy drawn from the planet’s life force. Cloud joins AVALANCHE, and the group discovers that Sephiroth has returned; the planet is in greater danger than they had expected. The official summary therefore connects the pursuit to the world’s survival, not just to a confrontation between two fighters.

That context explains why the story presents the pursuit as more than a private grudge. Cloud is the character pursuing Sephiroth, but he does so with a group, and the official REBIRTH page describes their aim as pursuing both Sephiroth and the truth. Meanwhile, the series overview places the return inside a larger conflict involving Shinra, mako, and danger to the planet. The two levels sit together: Cloud is Sephiroth’s personal opponent, and the party’s pursuit is tied to a threat with broader consequences.

The sources establish their narrative roles, not a numerical comparison of their abilities. Sephiroth is identified as a powerful former SOLDIER and Cloud’s nemesis; Cloud is the character pursuing him with the party. That supports describing them as opponents, but not assigning either a definitive strength ranking based on these summaries. It also avoids reducing the conflict to a question of who would win a fight: the official framing emphasizes the pursuit, the truth, and the danger to the planet.

What is Sephiroth trying to do?

According to the REBIRTH character profile, Sephiroth seeks to change destiny and rule the planet. Those are the clearest stated aims in the official summary. His taking of the Jenova specimen is part of the same profile’s account of his return, but that summary does not spell out every link between the specimen, his powers, and his plans.

It is useful to separate what the profile says from broader interpretations of the lore. It names Jenova as a Shinra research specimen and says Sephiroth absconds with it. It does not, in the text available here, provide a complete explanation of Jenova’s relationship to Sephiroth or establish a full causal account of his change. A concise character profile gives enough to understand the immediate stakes without settling every mystery in the story.

For a straightforward answer to “What is Sephiroth trying to do?”, use the goal Square Enix actually states: change destiny and rule the planet. The first part signals that his ambition reaches beyond an ordinary contest with Cloud; the second makes clear that the planet is central to the threat. The official description does not elaborate on what “change destiny” means in every detail, so it is better not to turn that phrase into a more specific plan than the profile provides.

The specimen is another concrete part of the account, but it should not be treated as a complete explanation of his motives. The page identifies Jenova as a Shinra research specimen and says Sephiroth takes it when he appears at the Shinra Building. It does not explain all of Jenova’s properties, define the full nature of the connection between Jenova and Sephiroth, or make every step between the theft and his stated ambition explicit. Those questions are part of the larger mystery, not facts this short official profile resolves.

How should you understand Sephiroth’s role in Rebirth?

Square Enix’s official REBIRTH character page frames the journey as Cloud and the group leaving Midgar to pursue Sephiroth and the truth. That wording matters: the party is not simply moving toward a known final confrontation. The pursuit is also an effort to uncover what is happening. The page presents the mystery as part of the premise; it should not be read as a claim that every question is resolved in that installment.

The profile also gives Sephiroth this line: “Don’t be afraid. It’s not death─it’s a homecoming.” It is presented as his dialogue on the official character page. The line adds an ominous tone, but it is not a substitute for an explanation of his motives or the story’s deeper mechanics.

For readers coming to the character through REBIRTH, the page’s framing is useful because it pairs the pursuit of Sephiroth with the pursuit of truth. It identifies him as the target of the journey while leaving room for unanswered questions. That is different from treating a character page as a full synopsis: its concise description provides the basic stakes and direction, not a complete account of every reveal or event.

The quoted line is similarly best understood as atmosphere rather than a lore key. Square Enix presents it as Sephiroth’s line, and its wording is unsettling. But the profile does not say that the line alone explains what he believes, what his plan involves, or exactly how Jenova relates to him. Readers can recognize its ominous tone without treating it as a definitive explanation of the plot.

What the official summaries establish—and what they leave open

For a spoiler-aware introduction, the official descriptions give a clear outline: Sephiroth was a celebrated SOLDIER: 1st Class, was believed to have died at Nibelheim, returned, took the Jenova specimen, and became Cloud’s nemesis. His stated ambition is to change destiny and rule the planet. These facts are enough to explain why the party pursues him and why his return is dangerous.

They are not a complete lore guide. The brief official summaries do not establish Sephiroth’s full origin, the precise relationship between him and Jenova, a complete explanation of the Nibelheim events, or a definitive ranking of his strength against Cloud’s. Those details should not be inferred from the short descriptions alone. The reliable short answer is that Sephiroth is a former hero whose return turns a presumed death into a personal pursuit with planetary stakes.

There is also a useful distinction between what happened and what it means. The profile gives a sequence of concrete points: a presumed death at Nibelheim, a later appearance at the Shinra Building, and the taking of Jenova. It states his goal and identifies Cloud as the person he toys with. The broader series overview supplies the setting of Shinra’s mako monopoly, Cloud’s involvement with AVALANCHE, and the danger to the planet. Together, those details explain the outline of the conflict, but they do not settle every explanation of Sephiroth’s past or motivations.

That distinction helps keep a basic character introduction accurate. You can say that Sephiroth was once regarded as a hero, that he was believed dead, and that he returns as Cloud’s nemesis with ambitions for the planet. You can also say the party pursues him and the truth. Claims about the complete origin of his powers, the exact mechanics of Jenova’s influence, or the full chain of events at Nibelheim go beyond what those concise official descriptions establish.
