Keiichiro Toyama is a Japanese game director and designer who founded Bokeh Game Studio, where he serves as CEO/Creator. He is best known for the original Silent Hill, the Siren series and the gravity-defying Gravity Rush games. His newer work, Slitterhead, combines urban horror with possession-based action.

Toyama’s games differ sharply in genre, but they share an emphasis on distinctive worlds, unusual player abilities and contrasts between the familiar and the disturbing. The guide below explains his career, influences, gameography and the best way to approach his work.

Who is Keiichiro Toyama?

Keiichiro Toyama is a Japanese video-game director and designer. He founded Bokeh Game Studio and is identified on Bokeh’s official profile as its CEO/Creator. Bokeh presents his career as spanning horror and action-adventure rather than belonging to one fixed genre.

His best-known association is with three very different properties: the original Silent Hill, the Siren horror series and Gravity Rush. Those credits can make his career look divided between horror and bright, kinetic action. In practice, Toyama has repeatedly used a game’s setting and central mechanic to create a distinctive identity.

Bokeh’s selected-works list connects Toyama with the following releases. The list is a compact career guide, not a claim that he was the sole creator of every game or that every production role was identical.

Year Selected work What it represents in his career
1999 Silent Hill Foundational psychological-survival-horror work
2004 Siren A Japanese horror series built around an ensemble cast
2006 Siren 2 Continuation of the Siren design and setting
2008 Siren: Blood Curse A further entry in the Siren line
2012 Gravity Rush Action-adventure centered on gravity manipulation
2017 Gravity Rush 2 Expansion of the gravity-based action-adventure concept

The chronology matters because it shows a deliberate change of creative direction: Toyama moved from nightmare-driven horror to a stylized action-adventure without abandoning his interest in unusual worlds.

It also helps separate a creator’s influence from a complete authorship claim. Large games are collaborative productions involving programmers, artists, writers, performers, producers and many other specialists. Bokeh’s list identifies these titles as selected works associated with Toyama; it does not say that he personally performed every role or that he alone determined every final detail.

How did Toyama enter game development?

Toyama studied design and video art at university. He entered the games industry as the medium was expanding and began as a designer rather than arriving with a single, fully formed directorial style.

In an interview, he described his early involvement in Snatcher as a form of rookie training. He then worked on Hyper Olympics in Atlanta, released internationally as International Track & Field. That project exposed him to 3D production and motion capture, technologies that were becoming increasingly important to console development at the time.

The contrast between those assignments is revealing. Snatcher gave him an early lesson in how a game communicates a world and premise, while a sports title forced him to think about responsive movement, physical performance and recorded motion. Neither project was a horror game, yet both offered practical experience that could later be applied to atmosphere, character animation and interactive spaces.

This early path helps explain why his later work combines visual composition with systems that strongly shape how players move and perceive a space. His background was not limited to writing stories or directing performances; it included hands-on design and the practical problems of building interactive environments.

What defines Toyama’s creative style?

Originality before genre loyalty

Toyama repeatedly describes originality and distinctive design as priorities. In his Bokeh profile, he says, “That commitment to originality is something I have no intention of changing.” He also says, “My goal is to build a studio where that spirit can thrive.”

Those statements are more useful than labeling him simply a horror director. Horror is one tool he has used, not the boundary of his work. Gravity Rush is evidence that he is equally interested in inventing a movement system and a world that could not be mistaken for a conventional action game.

Originality in this context does not mean that every element must be unprecedented. It means that the combination of setting, viewpoint, mood and player action should feel specific to the game. A familiar street can become strange through lighting and sound; a familiar fight can become unusual when the player changes bodies or gravity. Toyama’s projects often make that combination their primary identity.

World-building as the starting point

In a 2025 interview conducted through a translator, Toyama said, “What I love is not specific to a role, but I love creating the background and creating the general world for a video game.” He explained that a setting provides the basis from which a game’s vision and history can develop.

This world-first approach appears in different forms across his projects. The fogbound town of Silent Hill, the interconnected perspectives of Siren, the floating city of Gravity Rush and the crowded urban spaces of Slitterhead all make the environment central rather than decorative.

For Toyama, a setting is also a practical design framework. Once the rules of a place are established, they can determine the kinds of characters who belong there, the threats that make sense and the mechanics that let players understand the fiction through action. That is why his games are easier to distinguish by their worlds and verbs than by a single visual style.

Mechanics chosen for the team and the setting

Toyama told the same 2025 interview that Slitterhead’s genre was selected because it suited the abilities of the team working on it, not merely because horror was his personal preference. That distinction is important: his projects begin with a creative problem and the strengths available to solve it, then turn those choices into a coherent player experience.

This also explains why his gameography moves between horror and action-adventure without feeling like a simple change of branding. A mechanic has to be understandable, expressive and achievable for the team. Gravity manipulation, ensemble viewpoints and body possession are not interchangeable features; each asks the player to read space and danger in a different way.

Contrast as a design tool

Toyama has recalled wanting Silent Hill to differ from Resident Evil and described working with light and dark. This is his retrospective account, not a complete explanation of the game’s style. Still, it points to a recurring interest in contrasts: safety and threat, ordinary streets and impossible events, or free movement and sudden disorientation.

Contrast can operate at several scales. A colorful city may contain frightening creatures; a human host may conceal an inhuman presence; a wall may become a floor when gravity changes. The result is not simply surprise for its own sake. The player is encouraged to question what a place, body or rule means before acting on it.

What influenced Silent Hill and Siren?

Silent Hill’s nightmare sources

Toyama said the original Silent Hill took inspiration from Stephen King and David Lynch. He also identified Jan Švankmajer’s film Alice and Jacob’s Ladder as visible influences on its nightmare theme.

These references help explain why Silent Hill is more concerned with psychological unease, distorted spaces and ambiguous imagery than with a straightforward monster assault. The game’s horror comes from the way an apparently recognizable place becomes unstable.

Stephen King represents the power of ordinary settings to contain extraordinary dread, while Lynch is associated with dream logic and unsettling shifts in identity. Švankmajer’s Alice and Jacob’s Ladder likewise help point toward a nightmare language in which transitions and images can be more disturbing than exposition. These are useful interpretive guideposts, not a claim that the game copies any one work.

Siren’s ensemble tradition

For Siren, Toyama pointed to ensemble-cast novels including Battle Royale and Shiki. That influence fits the series’ interest in several characters and intersecting viewpoints rather than a single hero moving through a linear nightmare.

An ensemble structure changes how suspense works. The player may learn something through one character that another does not know, then see the same crisis from a different position. The sense of place grows through overlapping experiences instead of a single uninterrupted route.

The two series therefore should not be treated as interchangeable versions of the same formula. Toyama associated Silent Hill with international horror cinema and fiction, while he described Siren through the structure and tension of ensemble novels.

Films he admires

Bokeh lists Eraserhead, Jan Švankmajer’s Alice, The Wicker Man, Santa Sangre, Macross: Do You Remember Love? and Lake of Illusions among Toyama’s favorite films. A favorite-film list is not the same as a direct influence list: it should not be read as proof that each title shaped every game.

The list does, however, suggest an appetite for unusual worlds, strong visual identities and shifts between beauty and unease. It is best used as context for Toyama’s taste rather than as a checklist for decoding a particular scene.

Did the same person make Silent Hill and Gravity Rush?

Yes. Toyama is associated with both the original Silent Hill and Gravity Rush, but they express very different creative goals. The comparison below focuses on what the player actually does and how each game uses its world.

Game or series Genre Central player activity World concept
Silent Hill Psychological survival horror Exploration, investigation and survival under psychological pressure A familiar town transformed into a nightmare landscape
Siren Ensemble-focused horror Survival and investigation across connected characters and viewpoints A community whose people and events are linked through an unsettling supernatural crisis
Gravity Rush Action-adventure Changing gravity, navigating freely and battling monsters The floating town of Hekseville
Slitterhead Action-adventure with horror elements Possessing human hosts, infiltrating danger zones and fighting disguised creatures Kowlong, a crowded fictional city inspired by Hong Kong

The older games’ current hardware availability can vary by edition and region, so the table describes their designs rather than promising a particular modern storefront version.

Another useful comparison is the player’s relationship with uncertainty. Silent Hill asks whether a place and its images can be trusted. Siren distributes uncertainty among several people and perspectives. Gravity Rush turns uncertainty into spatial freedom: the player must constantly decide what counts as “down.” Slitterhead shifts the question to identity, asking which bodies and faces can be trusted in a crowd.

What makes Gravity Rush different?

Gravity Rush is the clearest demonstration that Toyama’s work is not limited to horror. It is an action-adventure set in the floating town of Hekseville. Its defining ability lets the player manipulate gravity, run along walls and free-fall in any direction.

That mechanic changes the basic meaning of a level. A wall can become a floor, a distant surface can become the next destination and a fall can function as movement rather than failure. Missions and battles with monsters give the unusual traversal a practical purpose instead of leaving it as a visual novelty.

The mechanic also changes how the city is presented. Hekseville is not merely a backdrop viewed from a street-level route; it is a three-dimensional puzzle of surfaces, gaps and viewpoints. Players learn the town by experimenting with orientation, not just by memorizing a map.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gravity Rush 2, released in 2017, continues that gravity-based action-adventure direction. Together, the two games show Toyama applying his interest in world design to a movement system that determines how players read space.

What is Slitterhead?

Slitterhead is Bokeh Game Studio’s action-adventure set in Kowlong. The player controls Hyoki, a bodiless entity able to possess human bodies. Hyoki can move between hosts, infiltrate dangerous areas and fight monsters that disguise themselves as people.

The possession system makes human identity part of the action. A host is not only a combat body; changing bodies can provide a way to enter a location, approach a threat or continue operating after a host is no longer useful. The city’s crowds make the disguise concept especially important because danger can be hidden in plain sight.

That premise connects fiction and control in the same way gravity does in Gravity Rush. The player does not simply watch Hyoki’s ability in a cutscene; movement between bodies is the way the player investigates, infiltrates and fights. The crowded setting gives the mechanic a social dimension as well as a tactical one.

The PS5 Day 1 Edition includes the PS5 game, an artbook with commentary by Toyama, an original soundtrack CD, a special box and a sticker. Those contents describe the edition; they do not guarantee that a retailer still has inventory.

For a buyer, the practical distinction is simple: digital versions are listed for several platforms, while the named physical release is a PS5 product. Checking the store page for your country remains important because listings, language options, stock and delivery terms can differ.

Where the setting came from

In a 2024 Game Developer interview, Toyama described Chinese folklore, Hong Kong cinema and earlier games as inspirations for Slitterhead. The fictional Kowlong is presented as a version of Hong Kong, with Kowloon Walled City as a key inspiration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Toyama also discussed a Chinese story about a creature with a human body and a dog’s head. That idea informed the conceit of monsters passing as ordinary people in a dense city. Kowlong is fictional; it should not be treated as a literal recreation of the real history of Kowloon Walled City.

The distinction matters because the game draws on an imagined city rather than offering a documentary account. Its crowded streets, layered architecture and cinematic influences are ingredients in a new setting designed for possession, pursuit and sudden revelation.

How do Toyama’s games connect despite their differences?

Looking across the projects reveals several design patterns. These are interpretive connections between the documented games, not a claim that every title uses identical systems.

  • The world carries the premise. Silent Hill’s altered town, Hekseville’s floating architecture and Kowlong’s crowded streets make setting inseparable from play.
  • The central mechanic expresses the fiction. Gravity manipulation explains how Gravity Rush is navigated; possession explains how Slitterhead handles movement, infiltration and combat.
  • Ordinary spaces become unstable. A town, a community or a city may look recognizable before the game introduces impossible rules.
  • Contrasts create tension. Toyama has discussed light and dark, and his games repeatedly oppose safety and danger, human appearance and monstrous identity, or a stable surface and a shifting reality.
  • Genre follows the creative problem. His move from horror to action-adventure suggests that he chooses the form that best supports the world and team rather than protecting a single brand of gameplay.
  • Perspective is active. A viewpoint can be a source of fear in Siren, a navigational choice in Gravity Rush or a question of bodily identity in Slitterhead.
  • Atmosphere is built through interaction. Fog, darkness, impossible architecture and crowded streets matter most when the player must move through them, investigate them or use their rules.

Which Toyama game should you play first?

The best starting point depends on the experience you want, because his major works do not provide interchangeable introductions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
If you want… Start with… Why
Psychological horror and distorted environments Silent Hill It is the clearest example of Toyama’s nightmare-focused approach and his interest in light, darkness and psychological unease.
Multi-character horror and connected viewpoints Siren Its ensemble structure reflects the novelistic influences Toyama has cited.
Inventive traversal and colorful action Gravity Rush Gravity manipulation makes movement the defining pleasure of the game.
Recent possession-based action in a crowded city Slitterhead It presents Bokeh’s current direction through host-switching, infiltration and urban monsters.

There is no requirement to play these games in release order. Starting with the mechanic or tone that interests you most gives a clearer sense of Toyama’s range than treating the games as one continuous series.

If you want a compact career tour, begin with Silent Hill, follow it with Gravity Rush, then try Slitterhead. That sequence moves from psychological horror to gravity-based exploration and finally to possession-based urban action. If ensemble storytelling is your priority, place Siren before the action-adventure games instead.

What is Toyama working on now?

Toyama’s current studio is Bokeh Game Studio, and Slitterhead is its publicly listed current game. Bokeh’s page lists the title as available across the platforms above and identifies its physical release as PS5-only.

Toyama has also described Bokeh as a place where he can pursue his vision more freely and support new titles from younger developers with fresh perspectives. That ambition frames Bokeh as more than a vehicle for revisiting his earlier series: it is intended as a studio for new worlds and new creators.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In other words, the most reliable answer to “what comes next?” is about the studio’s direction rather than an announced list of future games. Bokeh’s stated goal is to let original ideas thrive and to encourage younger developers, while Slitterhead is the current public example of that approach.
