iPhone Handoff is for people who use two or more nearby, compatible Apple devices and want to continue the same supported activity without starting over. You can begin a Safari page, email, note, map route, document or FaceTime session on an iPhone and resume it on a Mac or iPad. It is much less useful if you own only one iPhone, use an app that does not support Handoff, or want to move a saved file rather than an active task.
What iPhone Handoff actually does
Apple describes Handoff as a way to “start a task on one Apple device and complete it on another.” The feature exposes a Handoff icon when a supported activity is available. On iPhone, that icon appears at the bottom of the App Switcher; on iPad and Mac, it appears in the Dock.
Apple’s examples include Calendar, Clock, Contacts, FaceTime, Freeform, Keynote, Mail, Maps, News, Notes, Numbers, Pages, Reminders, Safari and Stocks. Some third-party apps also support it, but only when their developers implement Handoff.
Handoff resumes an activity; it is not primarily a file-transfer tool. If you need to send a completed photo, document or other saved file, AirDrop or cloud storage is usually the better match.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Who benefits most
People switching between an iPhone and Mac
This is the classic use case. You can start composing an email, reading a webpage, writing a note or editing a document on your phone, then continue on a Mac’s larger screen and keyboard. The receiving device opens the corresponding activity rather than merely receiving a copy of a file.
People switching between an iPhone and iPad
An iPad can provide a larger reading or writing surface while preserving the task you began on your iPhone. This is useful for Safari, Mail, Notes, Maps and supported productivity apps.
Apple Watch owners
Some Apple Watch activities can be handed off to the paired iPhone. Support depends on the activity and the app, so not every Watch screen can be continued elsewhere.

Users of compatible third-party apps
Handoff is available only where the app developer has added support. Two apps that perform similar jobs may therefore behave differently: one may offer a Handoff icon while the other does not.
Who gets little or no value
- Single-device users: With no nearby compatible Apple device, there is nowhere to hand the activity off.
- Unsupported-app users: Handoff cannot create continuity that an app has not implemented.
- People transferring finished files: Use a file-sharing method when the goal is delivery rather than resuming an open task.
- Devices on different Apple Accounts: Handoff requires the same account on both devices.
Requirements before Handoff can appear
Apple’s setup and troubleshooting guidance requires the following on both devices:
- Wi-Fi turned on.
- Bluetooth turned on.
- The same Apple Account signed in.
- Handoff enabled in the device settings.
- Compatible operating-system versions and supported hardware.
- Devices close enough to communicate locally. Apple’s Mac guidance uses 10 metres (30 feet) as the distance to check when Handoff is not working.
A virtual private network can also interfere with the local networking Handoff needs. Temporarily disconnecting a VPN is a useful diagnostic step if every other requirement is satisfied.

How to use Handoff between devices
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on the iPhone and the receiving Apple device.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices and keep them nearby.
- Enable Handoff in the relevant Continuity or AirPlay & Handoff settings.
- Open a supported app and begin the activity on the first device.
- On iPhone, open the App Switcher and tap the Handoff banner at the bottom. On iPad or Mac, select the Handoff icon in the Dock.
- Continue the activity on the second device. If no icon appears, verify the checklist below before assuming the app is unsupported.
Why you may not see the Handoff icon
Check account and radios first
Confirm that both devices use the same Apple Account and that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on each one. Handoff will not work reliably when either radio is off.
Bring the devices closer
Move them within roughly 10 metres (30 feet), remove obstacles where possible, and try again.
Check the app
Try a known Apple app such as Safari, Mail or Notes. If Handoff works there but not in a third-party app, that app may not implement the feature.

Test without a VPN
Disconnect the VPN briefly and retry. If Handoff returns, the VPN configuration or its local-network handling is the likely cause; consult the VPN provider before leaving it disabled.
Verify software support
Install available system updates and confirm that both devices meet Apple’s minimum requirements. Older hardware or software can prevent Handoff even when the account and wireless settings are correct.
Handoff, AirDrop and cloud storage compared
| Option | Main purpose | Typical device combinations | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handoff | Resume an active supported task | iPhone–Mac, iPhone–iPad, some Watch–iPhone activities | Same Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Handoff enabled, nearby compatible devices |
| AirDrop | Send a saved file or item | Nearby Apple devices | Wireless discovery and receiving permissions; it does not require an app to expose a Handoff activity |
| Cloud storage or app sync | Keep saved data available across devices | Any supported signed-in devices | An account and an app or service that synchronizes the data; it may not reopen the exact active screen |
Do not confuse two features called “iPhone Handoff”
Apple also uses “iPhone Handoff” for a separate cellular capability that can place the same phone number on two iPhones. In that arrangement, calls, voicemail, messages, Find My location and other iCloud-synced data follow whichever iPhone is active, while only one iPhone is active on the mobile network at a time.

That two-iPhone service depends on participating carriers and supported countries or regions. It is different from ordinary Handoff, which continues an app activity between devices over local connectivity. Check carrier availability before treating the cellular feature as a general Apple setting.
Security and privacy in normal Handoff
Apple’s security documentation says nearby iPhone, iPad and Mac devices establish encrypted pairing and protect the activity payload. Handoff can also resume an activity between a native app and a website when the developer controls the relevant domain. The feature is therefore designed for trusted devices signed in to the same Apple Account, not for anonymously sharing an open task with another person’s device.
Bottom line: is Handoff for you?
Choose Handoff if you regularly move between an iPhone and a Mac, iPad or supported Apple Watch activity and want to pick up where you left off. Skip it as a priority if you use one iPhone, rely mainly on unsupported apps, or simply need to send files. Before troubleshooting, establish which “iPhone Handoff” you mean: cross-device task continuation or the carrier-dependent option for using one number on two iPhones.
