To protect your location privacy, review three separate things: the people you share with, the apps that can access your phone’s location, and access to your device or account. Changing one does not automatically change the others. If someone may be monitoring or controlling your phone, consider safety before making visible changes.
First, know what you are reviewing
A phone’s location can be determined using signals such as GPS, cellular networks, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Apps may have different levels of access, including access while running in the background. Separately, a person-to-person sharing feature can send your location to selected people. Account or device access is another path to consider.
- People sharing: Who can see your location through Find My or Google Location Sharing?
- App access: Which apps can use your device’s location, and when?
- Account and device access: Are there devices or accessories linked to your account that you do not recognize or no longer use?
These controls are distinct. For example, removing an app’s location permission does not necessarily stop a separate location-sharing relationship or remove another person’s access to your account.
Review who can see your location
iPhone: Check Find My
- Open the Find My app and review the people with whom you share your location.
- Stop sharing with anyone who should no longer have access. Apple also provides a location information checklist with steps for managing sharing with a selected person.
- Review the devices and accessories associated with your Apple account, and remove access or items you no longer recognize or use.
Android: Check Google Location Sharing
- Open Google’s Location Sharing settings and review the people who can see your real-time location.
- Stop sharing with anyone who no longer needs access.
Google Location Sharing is for people you select; it is not the same as granting an app permission to use location. Availability can vary for Google Workspace accounts, so the feature may not appear or work the same way on every account.

Check which apps can access your location
iPhone: Review Location Services
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Review apps one by one. Ask whether each needs location at all and, if so, whether it needs access only while you use it or also in the background.
- For apps that need location, consider whether they need your precise location or can work with less precise information.
Apple says Location Services can use cellular, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth information. iPhone can also remind you when an app has used location in the background and show where that access occurred. Menu labels can differ by software version. See Apple’s privacy and Location Services guidance for more information.
Android: Review location permission and precision
- Open the location-permission controls for your apps. The exact path varies by Android version and device maker, so use the settings search for “location” or “app permissions” if needed.
- For each app, decide whether it needs location and whether access should be limited to when you use the app.
- Turn off precise location for apps that do not need it; where available, grant approximate location instead.
- Review Google’s app location data-sharing information to see whether apps share location data.
Android’s controls and labels vary across devices. Google also describes a single-session location permission option in an Android article dated September 30, 2026; whether it is available depends on the device, software version, and rollout. Do not assume another phone has the same menu or option.

If you suspect someone is monitoring your phone
Do not assume a particular phone symptom proves surveillance. But if you are concerned about stalking, coercion, or stalkerware, a sudden settings change, search, or call for help could alert the person monitoring the device or disrupt a safety plan. The Federal Trade Commission advises considering contact with an advocate or law enforcement from a different device if stalkerware may be present. Read the FTC’s Stalkerware: What To Know guidance, and prioritize a plan that is safe for your circumstances.

What airplane mode and signal-blocking pouches can—and cannot—do
Airplane mode is not a guaranteed way to block every signal. A Faraday or signal-blocking pouch may interrupt wireless signals while the phone is enclosed, but it also prevents ordinary connectivity; the Associated Press recommends testing a pouch rather than assuming it works. Neither airplane mode nor a pouch removes app permissions, ends a person-to-person sharing relationship, or secures an account. They are temporary signal measures, not substitutes for reviewing the relevant settings.

A practical review order
- Consider whether it is safe to make changes on this device right now.
- Review and revoke unwanted people-sharing access in Find My or Google Location Sharing.
- Review app-by-app location permissions, background access, and precision.
- Check linked devices and account access separately; do not treat an app-permission change as an account security check.
- If you suspect monitoring, use a safer device to seek specialized support where feasible.
