Obito Uchiha, Nagato/Pain, and Itachi Uchiha are the most defensible top three Akatsuki members. A practical ordering is Obito first, Pain second, and Itachi third, but Naruto provides no official strongest-to-weakest Akatsuki table. The result changes with each character’s story version, preparation, stamina, and the matchup.
How this ranking is decided
This ranking compares each member’s strongest demonstrated combat form while associated with Akatsuki, without special battlefield preparation. It weighs demonstrated offensive scale, defensive survivability, versatility and range, techniques that bypass ordinary defenses, stamina, known limitations, information, and story version.
“Pain” also needs clarification. The name can refer to Nagato himself or to the Six Paths of Pain, six bodies controlled through the Rinnegan. Obito likewise changes considerably during his time in the organization. Itachi’s illness and limited stamina affect how long he can maintain his most dangerous techniques. Those assumptions make the list useful without presenting an editorial judgment as canon.

The top three
| Editorial rank | Member and version considered | Why the member belongs here | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Obito Uchiha, strongest Akatsuki-era combat form | Kamui gives him an unusually powerful space-time advantage: opponents struggle to hit him, and he can remove a target from the fight. | His abilities and circumstances change across story stages, so “Obito” is not one constant power level. |
| 2 | Nagato/Pain, represented by the Six Paths | The Six Paths provide multiple bodies wielding the Rinnegan, while Pain’s Almighty Push famously leveled the Hidden Leaf Village. | The comparison depends on whether a fight is against the linked Six Paths or Nagato’s own body. |
| 3 | Itachi Uchiha, Akatsuki-era Mangekyo Sharingan user | His Mangekyo Sharingan trapped Kakashi in Tsukuyomi, demonstrating a fast, fight-changing genjutsu threat. | Illness and stamina limit how long he can sustain his strongest techniques. |
1. Obito Uchiha
Obito takes the first position under the most useful single-fighter criterion: the ability to avoid conventional contact while creating a direct route to remove an opponent. His Kamui-based space-time technique makes him exceptionally difficult to hit and can send a target away from the immediate battle. That combination matters more than raw destructive spectacle in a duel, because an opponent may never get a reliable chance to attack.
This placement is an interpretation of his strongest Akatsuki-era showing, not a claim that every version of Obito defeats every version of Pain or Itachi. His identity, available powers, objectives, and circumstances develop throughout the story. A ranking that treats his earliest and latest Akatsuki stages as identical obscures the very difference that makes him difficult to place.
Obito’s advantage is therefore matchup-driven. Against a fighter who depends on landing ordinary attacks, Kamui can decide the fight before that fighter’s offensive scale matters. Against an opponent with information, area control, or a way to force him to remain tangible, the margin is less certain. The available official material does not provide a head-to-head table that resolves those cases.

Pain has the clearest large-scale destructive evidence in the source material. The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE describes him as Akatsuki’s leader and says: “A familiar face to all Naruto fans, Pain famously leveled the Hidden Leaf Village with his devastating Almighty Push.” That is a concrete demonstration of enormous area effect, not merely a reputation claim.

The same official retrospective describes the Six Paths as six versions of Pain, all wielding the Rinnegan. Fighting six coordinated bodies changes the problem from defeating one exceptionally strong ninja to identifying and overcoming a linked system with multiple attack angles. It also explains why “Pain” and “Nagato” should not be used as interchangeable labels in every matchup.
Pain ranks below Obito here because the ranking gives special weight to a space-time ability that can bypass conventional engagement. That is not an official comparison. Pain’s village-level feat could justify placing him first under a destruction-focused scale, while a team battle against the Six Paths may favor him over a single opponent who cannot learn how the system works.
3. Itachi Uchiha
Itachi’s case rests on precision and fight-ending techniques rather than the largest visible blast. An official Naruto retrospective describes him using the Mangekyo Sharingan to trap Kakashi in Tsukuyomi. That feat shows how quickly his genjutsu can incapacitate a highly capable opponent once the conditions for it are met.

The official episode synopsis also confirms that Itachi joined Akatsuki. His placement in the top tier follows from the combination of Mangekyo abilities, tactical judgment, and the threat of ending an encounter before an opponent can exploit his physical limitations.

Itachi is not ranked above Pain or Obito because his illness and stamina restrict the duration of his strongest techniques. A short, information-poor confrontation can favor him; a prolonged engagement makes those limitations increasingly important. The evidence supports “top tier,” but it does not establish a definitive duel result against either of the two characters above him.
Why the next tier is harder to order
After the top three, the available official material gives strong individual facts but not enough comparable, version-matched fights to produce a reliable full-roster order. The following members can be distinguished by what they demonstrably do, but assigning exact fourth-through-tenth places would imply precision the evidence does not provide.
Kakuzu: longevity and five-nature versatility
Kakuzu has one of the most distinctive defensive profiles in Akatsuki. The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE states: “Kakuzu prolonged his life for nearly 100 years by stealing the hearts of others via the forbidden jutsu, Jiongu.” The site also explains that implanting those hearts enabled him to wield all five chakra natures.

That combination gives Kakuzu unusual staying power and broad elemental options. It is a source-backed reason to place him above members whose defining advantage is narrower. It still does not establish a precise matchup result against Deidara, Sasori, Konan, or Kisame, because the cited material does not compare their abilities under identical conditions.

Hidan: extreme survivability, limited breadth
Hidan’s defining advantage is surviving damage that would normally end a fight. The official retrospective recounts him surviving decapitation, after which Kakuzu sewed his head back onto his body. That makes him exceptionally difficult to finish by ordinary physical injury.
Survivability should not be confused with unlimited offensive versatility. The same account shows Shikamaru’s analysis enabling the Leaf team to turn the fight. Hidan is therefore a dangerous specialist: an opponent must solve the problem of his continued survival, but that fact alone does not prove he belongs near the top three in destructive scale or adaptability.
Kisame Hoshigaki: a chakra-consuming weapon
Kisame is paired with Itachi in the official retrospective covering their arrival at the Hidden Leaf. An official merchandise feature identifies his signature Samehada as a blade known for consuming flesh and chakra. That property gives Kisame a clear identity as a close-range threat against opponents who depend on large chakra reserves.
Samehada’s documented function is a useful differentiator, but it does not by itself settle Kisame’s position among the middle tier. Detailed match outcomes and claims about how much chakra he can absorb require the manga or anime’s specific scenes rather than the merchandise description alone.

Deidara, Sasori, Konan, Zetsu, and Tobi
The official material collected for this comparison documents these characters as part of the Akatsuki merchandise lineup, but it does not supply enough directly comparable combat evidence to assign each a precise place. Their inclusion in an official collectible project confirms roster recognition, not a power ranking.
Any list that puts these members in an exact order should identify its own assumptions and source of judgment. A result can be useful as fan analysis, but it should not be presented as a canon table when no such table has been published.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where Orochimaru fits
Orochimaru was a former Akatsuki member, so a list must state whether it covers only the central active Shippuden roster or also former members and versions outside their Akatsuki tenure. The official source confirms that Orochimaru introduced Itachi into the organization alongside Pain, but the material used here does not establish his full comparative standing.
Including Orochimaru without specifying a version can distort the result because his abilities and circumstances outside Akatsuki are not the same question as his strength while he belonged to the organization. Excluding him is reasonable for an active-roster list, provided the scope is stated.
How different assumptions change the answer
| Ranking assumption | Likely effect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Single-fighter duel, no preparation | Favors Obito’s placement | Kamui’s space-time defense and removal option directly address ordinary attacks. |
| Maximum destructive scale | Raises Pain’s case for first | Almighty Push leveled the Hidden Leaf Village. |
| Short encounter with limited information | Strengthens Itachi’s upset potential | Tsukuyomi can incapacitate an opponent quickly if its conditions are met. |
| Extended battle | Penalizes Itachi | His illness and stamina limit sustained use of his strongest techniques. |
| Team battle against multiple targets | Can favor the Six Paths of Pain | Six Rinnegan-wielding bodies create coordinated pressure rather than a one-on-one exchange. |
| Roster-wide list including former members | Requires a separate Orochimaru entry | Former membership and off-roster versions otherwise mix different questions. |
A practical strongest-Akatsuki verdict
If one answer is required, use Obito first, Pain/Nagato second, and Itachi third. Call that an editorial ordering of the strongest demonstrated Akatsuki-era forms, not a published Naruto ranking. Obito’s Kamui supplies the best single-fighter defensive and removal tool; Pain has the strongest explicitly cited area-destruction feat and the Six Paths’ multi-body pressure; Itachi has the most immediately decisive precision threat among the three, balanced by illness and stamina.
Kakuzu is the clearest next-tier candidate on the documented evidence because nearly a century of life extension and access to all five chakra natures give him both durability and versatility. Hidan’s edge is surviving otherwise fatal injury, while Kisame’s defining weapon consumes flesh and chakra. The remaining placements are best treated as matchup-dependent fan judgments rather than settled facts.
Optional fan collectible
The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE’s 2025 merchandise feature includes a Naruto Shippuden Vibration Stars Pain figure as part of BANPRESTO’s Akatsuki project. The project covers 10 characters in 11 variations, with releases listed for May, June, and July 2025. Those dates describe the project’s release schedule, not current stock availability, and the merchandise count is not a strength statistic.
