Brian K. Vaughan is the writer and co-creator; Cliff Chiang is the artist and co-creator. Their best-documented joint project is Paper Girls, an Image Comics series collected in Paper Girls: The Complete Story. If you want their collaboration in one purchase, that complete edition is the clearest place to begin. Vaughan’s separate work includes Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways, Saga and Paper Girls; Chiang is widely associated with DC work including The Creeper, Human Target, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Wonder Woman.
Brian K. Vaughan in brief
Brian K. Vaughan is a comics writer and co-creator. His representative bibliography spans creator-owned series, graphic novels and work featuring established DC and Marvel characters. The titles most useful for a new reader to recognize are Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways, Saga and Paper Girls.
That list is not a complete bibliography. It is a set of signposts showing the range of projects attached to Vaughan’s name. Some are collaborations with other artists, while Paper Girls is the project in this guide that directly connects him with Cliff Chiang. Vaughan’s role on the pair’s shared book is writing and co-creation rather than drawing.

- Look for Vaughan when you want to follow a writer across multiple series and publishers.
- Expect the credit to identify the person shaping the script, characters, dialogue and story structure, while a separate artist supplies the visual storytelling.
- Do not treat every Vaughan title as a Vaughan–Chiang collaboration. The two creators’ shared work is a narrower part of Vaughan’s larger career.
Cliff Chiang in brief
Cliff Chiang is a comics artist and co-creator. Publisher biographies identify work on The Creeper, Human Target, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Wonder Woman. Those credits place him in both superhero and non-superhero publishing, with Wonder Woman serving as the most recognizable entry point for readers who know his DC work.

Chiang’s role in Paper Girls is visual co-creation. In practical terms, readers encounter his contribution through page layouts, character acting, environments, pacing and the visual interpretation of Vaughan’s script. A credit that lists Chiang as artist does not make him a secondary participant: the series is presented as a Vaughan–Chiang co-creation.
What a Chiang credit tells you
- Start with Chiang if the visual identity of a comic is your main reason for picking it up.
- Use his DC credits as a path into his career, but remember that those books are not automatically collaborations with Vaughan.
- Choose Paper Girls when you specifically want to see Chiang’s long-form work with Vaughan rather than a standalone sample of his superhero art.
How Vaughan and Chiang are connected
Vaughan and Chiang co-created Paper Girls, which Image Comics announced as an ongoing series by the pair. Their collaboration predates that launch: Image’s announcement says Vaughan had last worked with his old friend Chiang on a Swamp Thing short story almost 15 years earlier. That detail matters because it shows that Paper Girls was not their first professional meeting, even though it is the shared project most clearly documented for readers today.

| Creator | Primary role on Paper Girls | Representative separate credits |
|---|---|---|
| Brian K. Vaughan | Writer and co-creator | Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways, Saga |
| Cliff Chiang | Artist and co-creator | The Creeper, Human Target, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Wonder Woman |
The table separates their individual careers from the joint credit. It also prevents a common misunderstanding: Vaughan is not the artist on every title associated with his name, and Chiang is not the writer of Vaughan’s broader bibliography.
Paper Girls: the shared starting point
Paper Girls is the practical starting point for anyone asking what Vaughan and Chiang made together. Image Comics lists Paper Girls: The Complete Story with Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson credited, and gives Image Comics as the publisher. The listed publication date for that edition is November 2, 2021.
The phrase “complete story” is important when you are deciding how to buy the series. It identifies a collected edition designed to gather the work in one volume rather than asking a newcomer to assemble separate installments. The available information establishes the book’s title, creators, publisher and publication date; it does not establish every physical specification, price, regional inventory status or format option.

Why the complete edition suits a newcomer
- One clearly identified collaboration: the edition puts Vaughan and Chiang’s shared credit on the same cover and product record.
- Less hunting: a reader can begin with the complete collection instead of trying to determine which separate volumes belong to the series.
- Easy attribution: Matt Wilson is also credited in the publisher listing, so the edition recognizes the broader creative team rather than reducing the book to a writer-only or artist-only label.
- Stable reference point: the November 2, 2021 date distinguishes this collection from later reprints or retailer listings that may use different availability information.
What the title does not establish
A complete collected edition is not evidence that every other Vaughan or Chiang collaboration is included. The earlier Swamp Thing short story mentioned in Image’s announcement is a separate historical credit, not an indication that it appears in Paper Girls: The Complete Story. Treat the two items as different parts of their working history.

Choosing a first book by your reading goal
There is no single correct Vaughan or Chiang entry point for every reader. The right choice depends on whether you want their shared work, a writer-led tour of Vaughan’s career or an artist-led tour of Chiang’s work.
| Your priority | Best starting direction | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Read the creators together | Paper Girls: The Complete Story | It is the clearly documented complete collection of their joint series. |
| Explore Vaughan as a writer | Choose one of his representative titles, such as Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways or Saga. | These books show his wider body of writing without implying that Chiang drew them. |
| Explore Chiang as an artist | Begin with a Chiang-associated title such as Wonder Woman, or select another listed credit that matches your interests. | These works let you follow Chiang’s art outside the Vaughan collaboration. |
| Follow their professional history | Read Paper Girls, then note the earlier Swamp Thing short-story collaboration. | This order starts with the accessible collected project and adds the older connection without confusing the two credits. |
If you are new to Vaughan
Readers often ask which title to choose first when they know Vaughan only by reputation. A useful answer is to decide whether the priority is Vaughan himself or the Vaughan–Chiang partnership. Choose a representative Vaughan title if you want to sample his writing across a project not defined by this specific artistic team. Choose Paper Girls: The Complete Story if the reason you are interested is the combination of Vaughan’s script and Chiang’s art.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Because the available creator information does not provide a complete edition-by-edition comparison of Vaughan’s other books, it would be misleading to declare one of those titles universally superior. The defensible distinction is about purpose: a solo-career starting point versus a documented joint starting point.
If you are new to Chiang
Begin with Paper Girls when you want a sustained collaboration rather than a short sample. Begin with one of the listed DC-associated works when you want to see Chiang working within a recognizable superhero property. The choice is about the kind of credit you want to follow, not a ranking of the books.

Comics are usually team productions, so the names on a cover can answer different questions. Vaughan’s writer credit identifies the person responsible for the script and story construction. Chiang’s artist credit identifies the person responsible for the visual realization of the pages. The publisher listing also credits Matt Wilson. Keep all three names attached to the edition when you describe it.

Calling Paper Girls a “Vaughan book” alone loses the reason many readers are seeking it. Calling it a “Chiang book” alone has the same problem. The accurate short description is that Vaughan and Chiang co-created the series, with Image Comics publishing the collected edition credited to Vaughan, Chiang and Wilson.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The television adaptation and what can safely be said
A 2022 interview with Syfy Wire described Vaughan and Chiang as co-creators and executive producers on the television adaptation of Paper Girls. That is a credit on the adaptation, not proof that the series remains available on a particular streaming service or in every country.
Availability changes with licensing, territory and time. If you are looking for the adaptation, verify the current listing in your region before assuming that an older article’s service information still applies. The comics collection remains the stable recommendation for readers whose goal is specifically to experience the Vaughan–Chiang collaboration in print.
How to avoid common attribution mistakes
- Do not call Vaughan the artist. He is identified here as the writer and co-creator.
- Do not call Chiang the writer of Vaughan’s bibliography. Chiang is identified as the artist and co-creator on their shared project.
- Do not say Paper Girls was their only collaboration. The Image announcement also mentions an earlier Swamp Thing short story.
- Do not treat every listed title as a joint book. Vaughan’s and Chiang’s representative credits mostly describe their separate careers.
- Do not infer current streaming access from the 2022 adaptation interview. The interview establishes their adaptation credits at that time, not present-day availability.
- Do not invent sales, awards or readership totals. The documented information supports qualitative career descriptions, not numerical performance claims.
A practical reading plan
- Set your goal. Decide whether you want the shared series, Vaughan’s writing, Chiang’s art or the creators’ professional connection.
- Use the complete edition for the shared work. Look for Paper Girls: The Complete Story, credited to Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson and published by Image Comics.
- Record the edition date. The publisher listing gives November 2, 2021; use that date when distinguishing this edition from later listings.
- Branch into individual work. For Vaughan, choose from Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways or Saga. For Chiang, choose among The Creeper, Human Target, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Wonder Woman.
- Keep the historical note separate. Add the earlier Swamp Thing short story to your understanding of their collaboration, but do not assume it is part of the complete Paper Girls collection.
- Check adaptation availability independently. If you want the television version, confirm the current regional listing rather than relying on a 2022 description.
What this guide can and cannot establish
The documented credits support a focused introduction, not an exhaustive bibliography. They establish Vaughan’s representative writing credits, Chiang’s representative art credits, their co-creation of Paper Girls, the earlier Swamp Thing short-story connection, the complete collected edition and the adaptation credits described in 2022.
They do not provide a complete list of every collaboration, detailed comparisons of every collected edition, current prices, worldwide stock information, sales figures or present-day streaming availability. Those details vary by market and date, so a responsible guide should not fill the gaps with guesses.
Bottom line
Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang are a writer–artist creative team best known together for Paper Girls. Vaughan’s wider career gives you several independent starting points, while Chiang’s DC and other publisher credits show a separate artistic range. For the collaboration itself, choose Image Comics’ Paper Girls: The Complete Story; for a broader career tour, branch from there into the representative Vaughan or Chiang titles that match your interests.
