White space is the intentionally unfilled area around and between elements in a design. It does not have to be white, and it is not automatically wasted: spacing can show which items belong together, clarify a page’s reading order, and make important content easier to find. The goal is not to maximize empty area, but to use enough space to distinguish groups without separating related material or hiding key content.
What white space means in design
White space, also called negative space, includes the gaps between text blocks, around images, in margins, and between lines or letters. The term describes an area left unfilled, not a particular color. A colored background can contain white space just as readily as a white page.
It can be macro space, such as a page margin or a wide gap between sections, or micro space, such as paragraph spacing, line spacing, or the gap between letters. Both affect how a layout is read.
Isn’t white space just wasted space?
No. Space helps communicate relationships. Items placed close together tend to be read as a group; greater separation can signal a change of subject or section. The University of North Texas Libraries explains the proximity principle this way: “In other words, items that are close are related, and items that are far apart are not.”

That makes spacing part of the information design, not merely decoration. A clear gap can distinguish a caption from the next paragraph, separate navigation from an article, or make a heading’s relationship to the text below it obvious. The W3C’s Making Content Usable for People with Cognitive and Learning Disabilities advises: “Put white space around objects and text, including boxes, paragraph headings, and content, so that each section is clearly separated.”
Space can also make a page feel less crowded and help people scan it. But more is not always better: if a heading is far from its text, or a label is detached from its control, the relationship becomes harder to understand. Excessive spacing can also push useful content out of view and require unnecessary scrolling.
How much white space is ideal?
There is no single percentage or measurement that works for every layout. A page’s purpose, screen size, type size, content density, and audience all affect what feels clear. Instead of aiming for a fixed amount of empty space, check whether the layout makes its structure and actions easy to understand.
- Related items still read as a group. Keep the space within a group tighter than the gap between distinct groups.
- Separate sections are distinguishable. A reader should be able to tell where one subject or task ends and another begins.
- Hierarchy and reading order are apparent. Headings, body text, images, captions, and controls should appear in a sensible visual sequence.
- Text and controls remain readable and usable. Spacing should not make labels, instructions, or interactive elements feel disconnected.
- Important material stays easy to find. Avoid so much vertical separation that key content disappears below the fold without a good reason.
How to adjust spacing in a layout
- Map the groups. Decide which elements belong together, such as a heading and its paragraph, a form label and its field, or an image and its caption. Keep their internal spacing relatively tight and increase the gap between separate groups.
- Find the actual source of crowding. Check margins, paragraph spacing, line spacing, heading gaps, image standoff, and column gutters. Adjust the relevant gap before adding decorative elements that do not improve understanding.
- Make one change at a time. Increase or reduce one kind of spacing, then inspect the page again. This makes it easier to see whether the change improved grouping or disrupted it.
- Review the whole reading path. Follow the page from its first heading through its final section. Confirm that important information is visible and that the intended order is clear on the screen or in the format people will use.
Margins and padding
Margins separate the content from the edges of a page or screen; padding creates space inside a container, such as a card or button. Increase either when elements feel cramped, but keep related content visually connected. On a responsive page, check narrow screens as well as wide ones: fixed spacing that looks comfortable on a desktop can consume too much of a phone display.

Paragraph and line spacing
Paragraph spacing helps distinguish one thought from the next, while line spacing affects how easily a reader can track from one line to another. If text feels dense, adjust these before inserting extra blank lines inconsistently. Any numerical setting is a starting point to test in context, not a universal standard; the right result depends on the typeface, font size, medium, and audience.
Headings, images, and columns
Leave enough room around headings for them to stand out, but keep each heading visually tied to the content it introduces. Give images space so they do not collide with nearby text, while keeping captions close enough to identify the image. Columns can reduce the length of lines in a wide text area, but gutters should separate columns without making them seem unrelated. Review the result at the actual display size rather than relying on a measurement alone.

Common white-space mistakes
- Adding space uniformly. Equal gaps everywhere can erase distinctions between items that belong together and sections that do not. Use spacing to express the structure.
- Separating labels from what they describe. Keep labels near their controls, captions near their images, and headings near their sections.
- Using empty area to hide weak hierarchy. Large gaps cannot replace clear headings, consistent alignment, or an obvious reading order.
- Letting key content drift out of view. Section separation is useful only while important material remains easy to locate.
- Treating a percentage or point value as a rule. Specific spacing values need to be evaluated against the format, type, screen, and people using the design.
Why a fixed white-space percentage is not a reliable target
A claim that a page should devote a particular percentage of its area to white space is not a dependable universal rule. The title-matching article by Rakesh Bhardwaj offers such a percentage and also suggests a connection between generous website spacing and lower bounce rates, but it provides no supporting study or attribution for those claims. Judge spacing by grouping, hierarchy, readability, usability, and content visibility instead.
