A persistent white line on an Android screen can point to a display hardware problem, especially if it appeared after a drop or other impact. The line alone cannot identify the failed component. Start with low-risk checks, then use your phone maker’s guidance; if the line remains, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
Why is there a white line on your phone screen?
A line can be a sign of a display problem, but the symptom by itself does not prove what caused it. Impact or pressure damage is one possibility even when the outer glass looks intact. Samsung says impact can cause abnormal lines or colors and recommends display repair for vertical or horizontal lines in that context. Google’s Pixel guidance likewise says lines may indicate a hardware issue.
These recommendations are specific to the manufacturers’ guidance: Google’s page covers Pixel phones, while Samsung’s applies to Galaxy devices. For another Android model, consult that manufacturer’s support channel rather than assuming the same diagnosis or procedure applies.
How to check white lines safely
1. Inspect the display and remove external accessories
Look for cracks, chips, impact marks, or signs of pressure, and note whether the line began after a drop. Remove the case and screen protector, clean the display, and see whether the symptom changes. These are initial checks recommended in Google’s general Android screen troubleshooting guide. Do not press, bend, or heat the screen to try to make the line disappear.

2. Restart the phone
Restart using the phone’s normal controls. Google’s general screen guide says holding the power button for about 30 seconds works on most phones, but button behavior and menus differ by manufacturer and model. If that instruction does not match your device, follow its manual.
3. Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the line disappears there, an app may be involved; if it remains, the test has not shown that a downloaded app caused the symptom. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting check, not a hardware repair or a definitive display diagnosis. The steps to enter and leave it vary by phone, so follow your manufacturer’s instructions. Samsung also describes Safe Mode as a way to distinguish downloaded-app behavior from issues that persist with original software.

4. Check for an update if your manufacturer recommends it
For Pixel phones, Google recommends checking for a system update when the screen flickers, has a green tint, or shows horizontal or vertical lines. If the issue is not resolved, Google advises contacting support or arranging repair. Other Android manufacturers may use different menus and troubleshooting steps.
When should you arrange a screen repair?
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if the line persists after these checks, or if it appeared after impact. Samsung recommends display repair for impact-related horizontal or vertical lines; Google directs Pixel owners with persistent lines to support or repair. For other brands, use the manufacturer’s support channel or an authorized service option.
