White dwarfs and neutron stars are both compact stellar remnants, but they are supported by different physics and therefore have different mass limits. A white dwarf is mainly held up by electron degeneracy pressure and has a familiar Chandrasekhar limit of about 1.4 solar masses. A neutron star is supported by pressure in ultra-dense nuclear matter; its maximum stable mass depends on the still-uncertain equation of state. A 2025 NASA/HEASARC summary gives 2.3 solar masses as a model-inferred maximum under its assumptions, while NASA has reported the observed neutron star PSR J0740+6620 at roughly 2.1 solar masses.

Magnetism does not divide the two classes as simply as “weak white dwarfs versus strong neutron stars.” White dwarfs can have fields spanning more than four orders of magnitude in a survey-era NASA summary, including a cited weak-field measurement of about 85 kilogauss. Neutron stars generally have powerful fields, and magnetars are an extreme subclass with estimated fields near 1015 gauss. These figures describe different kinds of evidence, so they should not be treated as one direct numerical contest.

The comparison in one view

Question White dwarf Neutron star
What supports it? Primarily electron degeneracy pressure: densely packed electrons resist further compression. Pressure in matter compressed to extreme nuclear densities; the relationship between pressure and density is described by an uncertain equation of state.
Mass figure most often quoted About 1.4 solar masses, the Chandrasekhar limit in the standard nonrotating picture. No single settled universal cutoff. A 2025 NASA/HEASARC NICER-related analysis inferred about 2.3 solar masses under its assumptions.
Observed high-mass example The 1.4-solar-mass value is a theoretical stability limit, not a typical measured mass for every white dwarf. PSR J0740+6620 has been reported by NASA at approximately 2.1 solar masses.
Magnetic-field picture Magnetism is diverse; a NASA technical-record synopsis describes detections over more than four orders of magnitude, including weak fields. Fields can be strong enough to power pulsar emission. Magnetars represent the extreme, with estimates around 1015 gauss.
What the headline number means A limit on the mass of a degenerate-electron-supported remnant, not the birth mass of its original star. A model-dependent maximum set by the unknown behavior of ultra-dense matter, distinct from the mass of any one observed star.

Why the support mechanisms set different limits

Gravity always acts inward. A compact remnant remains stable only when an opposing pressure can balance that pull. The identity of the particles providing that pressure is the key difference between the two classes.

Electron degeneracy in a white dwarf

A white dwarf contains the exposed, compressed core left after a star has shed its outer layers. Its electrons are packed into quantum-mechanical states. The Pauli exclusion principle prevents identical electrons from occupying the same state, producing electron degeneracy pressure even when the material is not supported by ordinary gas heat.

Adding mass raises the density and pushes the electrons toward relativistic speeds. In the standard Chandrasekhar calculation, the pressure law changes as the electrons become relativistic. Above roughly 1.4 times the Sun’s mass, electron degeneracy cannot provide a stable, nonrotating white-dwarf configuration. NASA’s “White Dwarfs” explainer, last modified in December 2010, presents this value as the Chandrasekhar limit.

Ultra-dense matter in a neutron star

A neutron star is compressed much farther than a white dwarf. Its interior is made of matter at densities where ordinary laboratory intuition is inadequate. The resisting pressure comes from the collective behavior of this ultra-dense material, not simply from an electron gas.

Physicists describe that behavior with an equation of state: a relationship connecting density, pressure, temperature and composition. Different allowed equations of state produce different maximum masses and radii. Because the high-density equation of state is not known with certainty, the neutron-star mass limit is a model result that can change as observations and calculations improve.

What the 1.4-solar-mass white-dwarf limit actually says

It is a remnant limit, not a stellar birth-mass limit

The Chandrasekhar limit applies to the final compact remnant supported by electron degeneracy pressure. It does not mean that the star originally formed with 1.4 solar masses. A star can begin life with substantially more mass, lose material during its evolution, and leave a white dwarf whose mass is well below the limit. Confusing progenitor mass with remnant mass is one of the most common errors in comparisons of stellar remnants.

“About 1.4” is an idealized benchmark

The quoted value is an approximation for the standard white-dwarf model. Composition, rotation, accretion history and binary evolution affect how a real object approaches instability. Rotation can add support in some circumstances; accretion can increase the remnant’s mass; and the composition determines details of the pressure and nuclear reactions. Therefore, 1.4 solar masses is a physically important benchmark, not a guarantee that every object reaching exactly that value behaves identically.

Approaching the limit can change the outcome

A white dwarf that gains material from a companion does not simply become a heavier version of the same object forever. Increasing density can trigger further nuclear burning or a catastrophic disruption, depending on the composition and evolutionary path. The Chandrasekhar limit identifies where ordinary electron-degeneracy support fails; it does not by itself specify the exact observable event for every binary system.

Why the neutron-star maximum is less certain

The equation of state is the missing piece

For neutron stars, the central question is how ultra-dense matter responds when compressed. A “stiff” equation of state supplies more pressure at a given density and can support a heavier star. A “soft” equation of state supplies less pressure and reaches instability at a lower mass. Observations of masses, radii and related signals narrow the possibilities, but they do not turn the model-dependent maximum into a directly measured universal constant.

The 2.3-solar-mass figure is a dated model inference

A NASA/HEASARC NICER Nuggets summary published in 2025 reports an inferred maximum supported neutron-star mass of about 2.3 solar masses under the assumptions of its equation-of-state analysis. That number should be labeled exactly that way: it is the result of a particular analysis, not a direct weighing of an object known to be the heaviest possible neutron star.

The 2.1-solar-mass object is an observation, not the limit

NASA’s April 17, 2021 NICER coverage reported PSR J0740+6620 at approximately 2.1 solar masses. This is a measured high-mass example that rules out models unable to support at least that much mass under the relevant interpretation. It remains below the 2.3-solar-mass maximum inferred in the later analysis, so the two figures are compatible: one describes a particular observed star and the other describes a model’s estimated upper bound.

Future mass and radius measurements can shift the allowed equation-of-state range. A new object heavier than the current inferred bound, or a revised analysis of existing data, would force the models to change. The numerical maximum should therefore always carry its source and date.

How the magnetic fields differ

White dwarfs: a broad and uneven distribution

White dwarfs are not automatically non-magnetic. Their fields can be detected through effects such as changes in emitted light and polarization, and the measured strengths vary widely between objects. A NASA Technical Reports Server synopsis from 1995 describes detected white-dwarf fields spanning more than four orders of magnitude. The same survey-era material cites a weak-field measurement of about 85 kilogauss.

That evidence is useful for establishing diversity, but it is not a modern, unified population average. The 1995 survey synopsis does not justify assigning one representative field strength to all white dwarfs or calculating a precise present-day ratio between white-dwarf and neutron-star fields. Some white dwarfs have comparatively weak fields; others are strongly magnetic enough to alter accretion flows and the appearance of a binary system.

Neutron stars: strong fields are common, magnetars are exceptional

Neutron-star fields influence charged particles and can produce pulsar emission. The rapid rotation of some neutron stars sweeps beams of radiation through space, allowing them to be observed as pulsars. Their fields are already powerful compared with everyday magnetic environments, but neutron stars are not all equivalent.

Magnetars are the high-field subclass. NASA’s magnetar explainer gives an estimated field scale near 1015 gauss. Such fields can stress the star’s crust and power intense bursts of high-energy radiation. The magnetar figure is an extreme estimate for a subclass, not a typical field assigned to every neutron star.

Why a single “which is more magnetic?” answer misleads

At the extreme end, magnetars have fields vastly beyond the weak fields cited for white dwarfs. But the populations overlap in the sense that white dwarfs can be magnetic and neutron stars have a range of field strengths. The available evidence does not provide a single, directly comparable population-average statistic for both classes. A scientifically accurate answer is therefore qualitative: neutron stars reach much more intense known fields, while white-dwarf magnetism spans a broad distribution that should not be reduced to zero or to one standard value.

Mass limit versus measured mass: keep the categories separate

Several different statements can contain a number in solar masses, but they do not answer the same question.

  • Theoretical stability limit: the approximately 1.4-solar-mass Chandrasekhar benchmark for an electron-degenerate white dwarf.
  • Model-inferred neutron-star maximum: the approximately 2.3-solar-mass result reported in the 2025 NASA/HEASARC NICER-related analysis, conditional on its assumptions.
  • Observed neutron-star mass: the approximately 2.1-solar-mass measurement reported for PSR J0740+6620 in NASA’s 2021 NICER article.
  • Estimated magnetic-field extreme: the approximately 1015-gauss scale associated with magnetars, not a mass and not a field shared by all neutron stars.

Putting these in one ranking without labels creates a false impression of precision. The white-dwarf value is a classic theoretical threshold; the neutron-star maximum is an evolving inference; the 2.1-solar-mass value belongs to one observed object; and the magnetar number describes an extreme magnetic subclass.

What happens when a remnant gains mass?

White-dwarf accretion

In a binary system, a white dwarf can receive material from a companion. The added mass increases the gravitational load and the density of the degenerate core. Whether the system remains a white dwarf, undergoes a thermonuclear event or follows another path depends on composition, the rate and duration of accretion, rotation and the binary’s history. The Chandrasekhar limit is the central warning that electron support has an upper capacity; it is not a complete prediction of the outcome.

Neutron-star growth

A neutron star can also gain mass in a binary, but the relevant failure point is controlled by the ultra-dense equation of state. If its mass exceeds the maximum allowed by that equation of state, it cannot remain a stable neutron star. Because the maximum is model-dependent, the precise transition mass is not known as a universal number.

How astronomers use observations to constrain the limits

Masses of compact remnants are generally established through their gravitational effects on companions, orbital timing or other dynamical measurements. A very massive neutron star is especially valuable because any viable equation of state must support at least that mass. Radius-sensitive observations add another constraint: a model must explain both how much mass the star carries and how compact it is.

NICER observations are important because X-ray pulse shapes contain information about the size and compactness of rotating neutron stars. The resulting constraints are combined with nuclear-physics calculations to infer which equations of state remain viable. That chain of inference is why a reported maximum must be attributed to a specific analysis rather than stated as an eternal constant.

Common mistakes and the accurate replacement

Misleading statement More accurate wording
“White dwarfs cannot be heavier than 1.4 solar masses, period.” “About 1.4 solar masses is the standard Chandrasekhar stability limit for an electron-degenerate white dwarf; composition, rotation and binary evolution affect real outcomes.”
“Neutron stars have a 2.3-solar-mass limit.” “A 2025 NASA/HEASARC analysis inferred about 2.3 solar masses under its equation-of-state assumptions; the universal maximum remains unsettled.”
“PSR J0740+6620 proves the neutron-star limit is 2.1 solar masses.” “PSR J0740+6620 is an observed neutron star of roughly 2.1 solar masses, not a measurement of the theoretical upper bound.”
“White dwarfs have no magnetic fields.” “White-dwarf fields vary widely; a NASA survey synopsis reports detections over more than four orders of magnitude.”
“Every neutron star is a magnetar.” “Magnetars are an extreme, high-field neutron-star subclass with estimated fields near 1015 gauss.”
“The progenitor star had the Chandrasekhar-limit mass.” “The Chandrasekhar limit applies to the compact remnant, while the original star could have had a different and larger mass before losing its envelope.”

What remains uncertain

The core distinction is secure: electron degeneracy sets the white-dwarf benchmark, while the neutron-star maximum depends on ultra-dense matter. The exact neutron-star cutoff is still being refined because no experiment reproduces neutron-star interior conditions directly. Likewise, the available white-dwarf magnetic-field evidence establishes a wide range but does not provide a current, uniform census that can be reduced to one average.

As Zaven Arzoumanian, NICER science lead at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, put it: “We’re surrounded by normal matter, the stuff of our everyday experience, but there’s much we don’t know about how matter behaves, and how it is transformed, under extreme conditions.” That uncertainty is not a flaw in the comparison; it is the reason mass-radius measurements, pulsar timing and magnetic observations remain scientifically valuable.

Bottom line

A white dwarf’s approximately 1.4-solar-mass Chandrasekhar limit comes from the loss of stable electron-degeneracy support as electrons become relativistic. A neutron star can be heavier, but its maximum mass is not a settled universal number: NASA’s 2025 summary gives about 2.3 solar masses for one model-dependent inference, while PSR J0740+6620 demonstrates an observed mass of roughly 2.1 solar masses. Magnetically, neutron stars reach the most extreme known fields through magnetars near 1015 gauss, whereas white dwarfs range from weakly magnetic to much stronger objects across more than four orders of magnitude in the cited survey-era record.
