A white-box switch is a network switch whose hardware is separate from its network operating system (NOS), so an operator can choose from software options supported on that specific device. It is also called a bare-metal network switch. The key distinction is choice—not universal compatibility: a NOS must support the exact switch platform.
What makes a switch “white-box”?
In a traditional vertically integrated switch, the hardware and network operating system are supplied as a combined platform. A white-box design separates those layers. The switch manufacturer supplies the physical platform, while the operator selects a compatible NOS. The Open Compute Project describes this approach as open switch hardware and disaggregated networking hardware and software (OCP Networking; OCP Open Network Install Environment).
This separation can give operators a choice of software, but it does not mean any operating system can run on any switch. Compatibility depends on the hardware platform and the NOS’s supported devices (GÉANT, Network Management and Monitoring Portfolio).
How do the hardware, ONIE and NOS fit together?
Switch hardware
The hardware is the physical switch: its chassis, ports, management subsystem and switching silicon. The hardware forwards network traffic, subject to the functions and configuration provided by the software.

- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
ONIE installs or provisions the NOS
The Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) is an installation environment that runs on the switch’s management subsystem. It can help locate and install a NOS; it is not itself the NOS, and it does not use the forwarding data plane. Once a NOS has been installed, later boots go directly into that NOS rather than returning to ONIE for each startup (ONIE technical documentation).
ONIE documentation describes several ways to locate an installer, including locally attached storage such as a USB memory stick. Having installation media alone does not ensure that an installer is available or compatible with the switch.

The NOS provides network functions
The NOS supplies the switch’s network operating functions. ONIE provides a way to install a NOS, but it does not make otherwise unsupported combinations work. Check that the NOS explicitly supports the exact switch model or platform before planning an installation.

“Open” in this context refers to separating hardware from software choice and, in some projects, using open interfaces. It is not a promise of plug-and-play compatibility, identical features across NOS options, or a single standard that makes every vendor’s hardware interchangeable.

For example, the Open Networking Foundation describes Stratum as an open-source, silicon-independent switch operating system for white-box switches. It supports interfaces such as P4Runtime and OpenConfig and can work with an external NOS or with NOS functions embedded on the switch. That project is one software example, not evidence that Stratum—or any other NOS—supports every white-box platform (Open Networking Foundation: Stratum).

- Platform support: Does the NOS list the exact switch model or hardware platform as supported?
- Switching silicon and ports: Do the silicon, port types and speeds match the network’s requirements?
- Required network features: Are the protocols and functions you need available on this hardware and NOS combination?
- Management and provisioning: Does the platform support the interfaces and installation process your team expects?
- Updates and security: Which provider supplies software updates, and what is the update and security-support lifecycle?
- Support and warranty: Which organization handles hardware warranty issues, NOS support and problems that cross the hardware/software boundary?
These checks follow from the separation of hardware, software and provisioning. The cited project documentation establishes the architecture; it does not establish a universal vendor ranking, guaranteed cost savings or a performance advantage.
