The Whirlpool MWP381SB is a 38L, 1000W countertop solo microwave with automatic cooking presets, defrost, a 30-second quick start, delayed start and a control-panel lock. It is not a grill or convection microwave. Its large footprint and requirement for open overhead clearance are important buying considerations, while the available owner feedback and public test information are too limited to support a confident verdict on cooking performance or reliability.
What the Whirlpool MWP381SB offers
Whirlpool Australia lists the MWP381SB as a black freestanding microwave with a 38L capacity and 1000W microwave output. Its feature set is for microwave cooking only: there is no verified grill or convection function in the specifications. The model is therefore best considered by shoppers who want a large-capacity solo microwave, not a multi-function oven.
Whirlpool lists Auto Cook, JetStart, Defrost/Jet Defrost, Scheduled Start and Panel Lock. JetStart begins cooking at high power for 30 seconds. Scheduled Start can delay operation by up to one hour, according to Whirlpool’s product page. The manual text describes Auto Cook and defrost settings that use the selected food type and weight; presets are conveniences, not evidence that results will be even for every food or load.

Preset categories and timer limit
The MWP381SB manual text lists Auto Cook options for minced beef, pasta, rice, fish, vegetables, chicken, popcorn, potato and beverage. It gives a maximum cooking time of 95 minutes. Check the manual supplied with the regional model for the exact operating instructions.

Dimensions, capacity and kitchen fit
Whirlpool’s published external dimensions are 553mm wide × 311mm high × 472mm deep. The appliance has a 315mm turntable, so check both the counter space and the diameter of dishes you expect to use. These are manufacturer specifications rather than independent measurements.

The manufacturer’s specification page identifies the appliance as freestanding. The retailer listing says it is not intended or designed for commercial use. Its dimensions make measuring the counter depth and door-opening space worthwhile before purchase.

Ventilation and safe use
The MWP381SB manual text says to leave at least 30cm above the oven and not to place it in a cabinet. That guidance can rule out an installation location that appears large enough based on the appliance’s dimensions alone. Confirm the instructions in the official manual supplied for your regional version before installing it. The manual also says cookware must be suitable for microwave use.
Is the MWP381SB any good?
On paper, it offers substantial capacity, 1000W output and a useful range of basic convenience controls. Those facts establish what it is equipped to do, but they do not establish how evenly or quickly it cooks. The accessible material does not provide a public independent performance score or laboratory findings for this model.

Public owner feedback is very limited. Appliances Online’s exact-model page displays two reviews: one dated 31 January 2026 reports scratches to the control-panel coating and a hard-to-see power-status display; another, dated 1 March 2024, describes satisfaction, easy cleaning and several months of use without issues. Two individual comments cannot establish typical usability or reliability.
CHOICE has an exact-model page and labels the MWP381SB discontinued. Its expert rating and cooking-performance sub-scores are available only to members, so there is no accessible CHOICE score to use as a public test verdict. A listed price on that page is not a dependable guide to today’s offer.

Is the Whirlpool MWP381SB discontinued, and what does it cost?
CHOICE labels the model discontinued, but Whirlpool Australia’s archive does not clearly establish live stock status. A comparison page whose price data was last updated 12 May 2026 showed a mixture of retailer offers, several marked out of stock, and said Amazon.com.au price data was unavailable. That dated snapshot is not a current price or proof of availability.

Who should consider it?
- Consider it if you need a 38L solo microwave, have room for its 553 × 311 × 472mm exterior, and can meet the manual’s clearance guidance.
- Look elsewhere if you need grilling or convection cooking, a compact unit, or documented independent performance results before buying.
- Check in person or with the seller if display legibility matters to you, given the individual owner comment about visibility.
The strongest case for the MWP381SB is its combination of capacity and straightforward microwave features. Whether it is a good buy now depends on a suitable installation space, regional warranty coverage and a live price that makes sense; the available evidence does not support a stronger performance or reliability claim.
