For a new Zigbee network using Home Assistant’s Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA), the clearest default choice is the official Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2. If you use Zigbee2MQTT, or prefer a third-party adapter, the SONOFF ZBDongle-E and ZBDongle-P are alternatives—but they use different radio chips and firmware families, so their suffixes are not interchangeable.

What a Zigbee USB coordinator does

A coordinator is the radio bridge that lets Home Assistant communicate with Zigbee devices such as sensors, lights, and switches. It is used with software such as ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT, and the software’s adapter and firmware requirements matter as much as the USB stick itself. A model being compatible with ZHA does not automatically mean it is configured the same way in Zigbee2MQTT.

In a reader discussion, one person put the buying question simply: “What zigbee coordinator would you recommend?” The answer depends first on which integration you plan to run and whether you are creating a network or replacing an existing coordinator.

Which coordinator should you choose?

Coordinator Radio family and protocol Best fit Important consideration
Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 EmberZNet adapter; see current Zigbee2MQTT requirements New ZHA network; official Home Assistant hardware Home Assistant recommends it for a new Zigbee network. Zigbee2MQTT users should check that software’s adapter settings.
SONOFF ZBDongle-E EFR32MG21 / Silicon Labs EmberZNet Third-party option for ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT Follow setup and firmware instructions for the exact software and model.
SONOFF ZBDongle-P CC2652P / Texas Instruments zStack Third-party option, particularly where a zStack adapter is intended It is a different radio family from the ZBDongle-E; do not use the E model’s instructions by assumption.
SMLIGHT SLZB-07 EFR32MG21 Another compatible option to consider Home Assistant lists it as an adapter; the available evidence does not establish a reason to rank it above the other choices.

Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2: the default for a new ZHA network

Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation describes the Connect ZBT-2 as the adapter to get when setting up a new Zigbee network: “If you are setting up a new Zigbee network, this is the one to get.” The hardware is made by Nabu Casa with the Home Assistant team. The preceding ZBT-1 has been discontinued and replaced by the ZBT-2, but remains supported for people who already own one.

#1 Best Overall
Sonoff Zigbee USB Dongle Plus-ZBDongle-E 3.0 External Antenna Interface SMA Gateway Universal, Pre-Installed with Zigbee Firmware Based on EZNet 6.10.3 Coordinated Home Assistant or Zigbee2MQTT
  • Pre-flashed with Zigbee coordinator firmware based on EZNet 6.10.3 out of box
  • Support smart home platforms like Home Assistant, openHAB, Zigbee2MQTT and so on
  • Based on EFR32MG21
  • +20dBm output gain
  • Aluminum housing effectively reduces signal interference from peripherals

The ZBT-2 is also listed by Zigbee2MQTT as an EmberZNet adapter. If you plan to use Zigbee2MQTT instead of ZHA, check its current adapter and firmware instructions rather than assuming that ZHA’s setup path or automatic detection applies.

SONOFF ZBDongle-E: a Silicon Labs-based alternative

The ZBDongle-E uses an EFR32MG21 chip and the Silicon Labs EmberZNet family. Home Assistant lists it among known ZHA-compatible adapters, and SONOFF documents setup for both ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT. Confirm the firmware and configuration required by your chosen integration.

SONOFF ZBDongle-P: a Texas Instruments-based alternative

The ZBDongle-P uses a CC2652P chip and Texas Instruments’ zStack. Home Assistant also lists it as a known ZHA-compatible adapter. Because the P and E models use different chip families and protocols, check the exact model before following an adapter guide or flashing firmware.

Why this is not a range or capacity ranking

The official guidance cited here does not provide controlled, head-to-head measurements for these adapters’ range, device capacity, or reliability. Those figures should not be inferred from the chip name or product listing. Placement, the surrounding radio environment, firmware, and network layout can all affect the result.

Check whether your Home Assistant hub already has a Zigbee radio

Before buying a USB coordinator, check the hardware in your Home Assistant system. Home Assistant Yellow has a built-in Zigbee radio; Home Assistant Green does not, so Green needs an adapter for ZHA. Home Assistant’s hardware documentation lists adapter and hub details at Zigbee Home Automation and Home Assistant hardware.

Set up the coordinator with ZHA

  1. Connect the adapter to the Home Assistant host. If you are replacing a coordinator, decide first whether you need to preserve the existing Zigbee network; migration is different from starting fresh.
  2. In Home Assistant, open Settings > Devices & services and add the Zigbee Home Automation integration.
  3. Select the detected serial device and allow ZHA to detect the radio type. If detection does not select the right type, choose the radio protocol manually according to the exact adapter’s instructions.
  4. For an existing network, use the applicable backup and restore process rather than creating a new network by accident. SONOFF’s ZHA guide describes restoring a previous network backup, retaining existing settings, uploading a backup manually, or erasing the adapter and creating a new network; these choices serve different migration situations.

Compatibility is not a guarantee that every Zigbee device will work out of the box. Home Assistant says it does not maintain an official list of devices that are guaranteed to work with ZHA, and some devices may need model-specific troubleshooting.

Set up and troubleshoot Zigbee2MQTT

Zigbee2MQTT has its own adapter support and firmware prerequisites. Check the supported-adapter documentation for your radio family and ensure the coordinator is running coordinator firmware—not router firmware. Avoid assuming that a configuration for a zStack adapter applies to an EmberZNet adapter, or vice versa.

  • Adapter fails to start: verify the serial path is current and points to the intended device. A stale path or selecting the wrong port can prevent connection.
  • Wrong firmware: confirm that the adapter has compatible coordinator firmware; router firmware is not a substitute.
  • Another integration is using the radio: ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT cannot both control the same coordinator at the same time. Stop or reconfigure the other integration.
  • Unstable USB connection or radio interference: move the adapter away from the host and nearby transmitters, and check that it has adequate power.
  • Remote serial connection is unreliable: if the coordinator must be network-attached, Zigbee2MQTT’s adapter guidance prefers wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi.

Improve USB placement before blaming the coordinator

A coordinator plugged directly into a computer or host can sit close to electronics and other radio transmitters that interfere with Zigbee. Zigbee2MQTT advises using a USB extension cable to move the adapter away from the host; a 50 cm cable can be enough to reduce interference. This is a placement recommendation, not a guaranteed coverage increase or a promise of a particular range.

Keep the coordinator in an open, practical location and away from concentrated electronics where possible. An extension cable is a low-complexity setup accessory, not a substitute for choosing the correct adapter family or configuring the integration properly.

Plan a coordinator replacement before moving an existing network

Replacing a coordinator can be more involved than pairing devices to a new stick. Zigbee2MQTT says migration may require repairing devices in some cases; it also states that coordinator backup is currently supported only for zStack- and EmberZNet-based adapters. SONOFF’s ZHA instructions describe restoring a prior network backup when replacing a coordinator.

  • Check whether the current coordinator and the replacement support the backup path for your integration.
  • Make and retain a backup before changing hardware, and follow the instructions for the software you actually use.
  • Distinguish restoring the existing network from erasing the adapter and forming a new one; the latter is not a migration.
  • Expect that some devices may need to be repaired if the migration process or adapter combination requires it.
