Almudron is commonly identified with Dorotabō, a muddy field spirit in Japanese folklore. That specific connection is reported by a community-maintained reference; developer interviews confirm that Monster Hunter Rise drew on yōkai broadly, but do not name Almudron’s individual inspiration.

The reported yokai behind Almudron

Dorotabō is a spirit associated with a neglected rice field. In the folklore summary cited by the Monster Hunter Wiki’s Almudron reference, it appears as a muddy, one-eyed old man—the spirit of a deceased field owner returning when the land is neglected. That muddy-field association makes Dorotabō the reported folklore parallel for Almudron.

The attribution needs a qualification. The reference page traces the claim to an official Monster Hunter social post and cites Monster Hunter Rise: The Official Complete Works for Almudron material. The cited social post’s text is not available to verify directly here, and the developer interviews below establish the game’s overall yōkai approach rather than naming Dorotabō as Almudron’s source. So Dorotabō is the clearest reported answer, not an individually developer-confirmed one.

What the developers confirmed about Rise’s yōkai theme

In a 2020 Dengeki Online interview, director Yasunori Ichinose said the team added a yōkai motif to every monster, including returning monsters, as part of the game’s Japanese-inspired theme. He described yōkai stories as often arising when people mistook animals or natural phenomena for something supernatural. Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto framed the influence as a design concept and tone, not a claim that the monsters are literally ghosts or demons.

Monster Hunter Rise - Nintendo Switch Standard Edition
  • The debut of the new “wirebug” mechanic allows for wire-based grappling actions that can be used to scale cliffs and other hard-to-reach areas, providing new traversal and aerial attack options.
  • The game will introduce magnamalo, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the shape-shifting aknosom, the amphibious tetranadon, and more.
  • New hunting partners called palamutes can be personalized and used to ride across the terrain, providing players with all-new traveling and attack options.
  • In addition to the plethora of solo and multiplayer quests, the immersive story mode will task aspiring hunters with discovering the secrets behind the puzzling “rampage” events that threaten kamura village.
  • Play solo, or join up to three other hunters in local or online co-op play. The Nintendo Switch system also allows for hunting anywhere, anytime and with anyone!

Tsujimoto explained the roster-wide design process to The Washington Post: “We thought by connecting the monster ecology and the yokai lore together, we could come up with new designs, so we shared a lot of monster ideas and then selected what works with gameplay.” That describes how folklore and creature ecology informed the game; it does not identify Almudron’s specific source.

Capcom cutscene designer Daisuke Wakahara likewise described the broader theme in an interview with Game Developer: “The world in Monster Hunter Rise was themed around Japan and Yōkai, so we made sure the cutscenes matched that theme. From early on, we wanted to make each monster look like a kind of supernatural creature, and I remember having a lot of fun doing research into the various Yōkai stories across the country and throughout history.”

How to read the folklore connection

The distinction is between a confirmed creative framework and a reported monster-specific attribution. Rise’s developers confirm that yōkai lore helped shape the roster’s concepts and atmosphere. Dorotabō is the specific yokai attached to Almudron in the cited reference, but the available interview evidence does not independently verify that pairing.

Other visual comparisons, including Ōnamazu, a giant catfish figure from Japanese folklore, may come up in fan discussion. The cited material does not establish Ōnamazu as Almudron’s primary inspiration, so it should not replace Dorotabō as the reported answer.
