Choose Modern WoW if your main goal is current-expansion endgame, especially cutting-edge Mythic+ keys or Heroic/Mythic raiding. Choose WoW: Forever if you want a Classic-rooted world where leveling, exploration, social interaction, and the journey matter more than getting quickly to a repeatable endgame loop. Forever is scheduled to launch on November 4, 2026, so as of October 13 its announced features and design direction can be assessed, but its full live experience cannot.
Start with the kind of play you want
There is no universal winner between these versions. The most useful question is not which one has more content or is objectively better; it is whether you want to spend most of your time pursuing the current endgame or moving through a world where the journey itself is a central part of play.
- Choose Modern WoW if current-expansion activities and high-end group challenges are your priority. Executive producer Ion Hazzikostas has specifically said that players focused on cutting-edge Heroic or Mythic raiding and pushing Mythic+ keys are not the audience Forever is being built around. Windows Central’s interview with Hazzikostas explains that distinction.
- Choose WoW: Forever if you want a Classic-rooted experience centered on exploration, leveling, social play, and the world. Those priorities appear in the development team’s stated pillars and interviews, rather than being a guarantee that every player will find the game slower or more enjoyable. TechRadar’s report on Forever’s design pillars describes that intent.
- Wait for launch impressions if your decision depends on how Forever’s announced systems work in practice. Its advertised features are not all evidence of a shipped, tested experience before launch.
Think of this as a choice between two different priorities, not a simple “new versus old” setting. The developers describe Forever as an ongoing, Classic-anchored version with its own direction and continuity—not merely Modern WoW with selected conveniences removed.

The table is a starting point, not a scorecard. If you care about several rows, rank them: the one or two activities you expect to do most often should weigh more than a feature you might try once.

What WoW: Forever is designed to be
Blizzard describes Forever as a new, ongoing version anchored in WoW’s first age, with an expanding world and new content. Its design pillars are “Nurture and Protect Social Experiences,” “Approachable and Familiar,” “World as the Main Character,” and “Journey before destination.” That framing indicates that the world and the process of progressing through it are intended to be central, rather than just a route to an endgame checklist.
The official page advertises new and expanded zones, more than 1,000 new quests, new dungeons, class and specialization revamps, a Legacy system, profession and Honor changes, and updated lighting and environments. These are announced features, not proof that every item is available in the same form at launch. Check the official Forever page for the latest launch information, and distinguish announcements from your own experience after the game is live.
The visual target is described as sitting between the look of 2004-era WoW and modern WoW, with improved lighting and rendering. That is a design aim, not a measured graphical comparison or a promise that the two versions will look equally modern. If visual fidelity is a deciding factor, screenshots or footage from the build available to you will be more useful than treating the stated target as a finished result.

The team has also described level 60 as the cap and horizontal progression as part of its intended approach. In the interview, future content is described as serving characters across levels as well as level-60 endgame. Take this as the announced design direction, not an immutable guarantee about how progression or every future update will work. The team interview with Windows Central discusses that direction.
What the social trade-off means in practice
Forever’s Classic-rooted approach is associated with less automatic matchmaking and more friction in forming groups. Hazzikostas described the trade-off plainly: friction and a lack of automatic matchmaking can create opportunities for social connection, but they can also be alienating and inconvenient. That is a reported design trade-off, not proof that every group in Forever will require the same amount of coordination or that Modern WoW is effortless in every situation.
Before choosing Forever, ask yourself how you feel about the process of getting into group content. If chatting, meeting players, and arranging a group are part of the appeal, the extra effort may suit you. If you often have only a short window to play and want to get into an activity quickly, that same friction may be a drawback; Modern WoW is the safer provisional recommendation on the available interview evidence.

This distinction matters most when your schedule is tight or your preferred content depends on finding other players. It matters less if you are primarily interested in progressing through the world at your own pace. Do not infer from the design description that Forever has no group content, or that all of its activities require manual organization: the evidence establishes a matchmaking trade-off, not a complete list of how each activity will work.
Choose based on your endgame expectations
Pick Modern WoW for the current endgame loop
If your main reason to play is pushing Mythic+ keys or pursuing Heroic/Mythic raids, Modern WoW is the clearer fit. The executive producer’s stated distinction is direct: those cutting-edge activities are not what Forever is being built around. That does not establish that Forever will have no challenging content; it does mean you should not choose it expecting the same focus on those particular endgame pursuits.
Pick Forever if reaching the cap is not the whole point
If you want leveling, exploration, and a world-centered journey to remain meaningful, Forever’s announced pillars align more closely with that preference. Its team has described an expanding Classic-rooted world and an intent for future content to serve characters across levels as well as level-60 endgame. Because the game has not reached its announced launch date, the practical balance between journey and endgame remains to be seen.

Do not use “more content” as a shortcut
Forever’s announced zones, quests, dungeons, and system changes make it clear that new material is planned. They do not establish how much will be available on day one, how quickly later additions will arrive, or whether the cadence will match what you want. The available evidence also does not provide a named numeric comparison proving that either version has more content overall or is better supported. Decide by the kind of play you want, not an unsupported content tally.

Forever has been described as having continuity separate from Modern WoW’s. Its story direction starts from foundational Warcraft lore instead of simply retelling Modern WoW’s developed narrative. If following the current version’s ongoing story is important to you, Modern WoW is the relevant choice; if you prefer a Classic-rooted starting point and a distinct continuity, Forever may be more appealing. The team’s reported comments on Forever’s lore support that distinction, but do not establish a complete future story plan.

Do not assume that choosing Forever means replaying Modern WoW’s current story in an older setting. The separate-continuity description points to a different narrative frame. Conversely, the available information is not enough to predict how every future story or character will be handled, so treat the broad direction as more reliable than guesses about specific plot developments.

Launch timing and access
As of October 13, 2026, Forever is scheduled to launch on November 4, 2026. The official page lists a beta window from September 17 through October 21, 2026. These are announced dates and may be worth rechecking before planning around them. The beta window is not the same as the full launch: at the date of this article, the announced beta period has not yet ended and the launch is still in the future. Blizzard’s official page is the source for the schedule.
Blizzard says Forever is included with an active WoW subscription. WoW, including Forever, requires a subscription or game time. The official page says the Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection include 30 days of game time; play beyond that included period requires a subscription or additional game time. Those packs are optional additions, not stated prerequisites for ordinary subscription access. Exact regional prices are not established here, so check the store for your region rather than relying on a price quoted elsewhere. See Blizzard’s access and pack details.
You do not need to treat the versions as mutually exclusive based on the available access information: Forever is included with an active WoW subscription. If you are undecided, you can make the version choice around the kind of session you want rather than buying an unrelated physical product or assuming an optional pack is required. The decision to subscribe or add game time is separate from deciding which version better fits your play style.
A practical decision checklist
- Name your main activity. If the answer is current-expansion Mythic+ or Heroic/Mythic raiding, start with Modern WoW. If it is exploration, leveling, or social world play, start with Forever.
- Consider how you find groups. If you value quick access to group activities, account for Forever’s described matchmaking friction. If meeting and coordinating with other players is part of the appeal, that trade-off may be acceptable.
- Decide which story you want. Modern WoW follows its current continuity; Forever is described as a separate continuity rooted in foundational Warcraft lore.
- Separate plans from live features. Before Forever’s scheduled November 4 launch, treat its zones, quest count, systems, and progression model as announced plans. Check the official page for updates, then assess how those features work once available.
- Check access for your region. Both versions use WoW subscription or game time, and optional packs should not be mistaken for the ordinary access requirement. Confirm current regional terms and prices in the official store.
If you still cannot choose, use the session test: “Do I want to reach and repeat the current endgame, or do I want the journey through the world itself to be the main event?” Your honest answer is a more dependable guide than a universal ranking of the two versions.
