There is no evidence-based universal winner among WordPress SEO plugins: the official WordPress.org directory lists candidates, but it does not compare their effect on rankings. Choose by the controls your site needs, compatibility, workflow, and cost—not by popularity alone. The options below are a shortlist, not a ranked top ten: current evidence supports naming several candidates, but not verifying ten products’ features and maintenance status side by side.

What a WordPress SEO plugin can—and cannot—do

An SEO plugin can provide controls for tasks such as editing titles and meta descriptions, managing XML sitemaps and noindex settings, adding schema, and handling redirects or migrations. Those capabilities help implement site-level SEO settings; they do not establish that a plugin will improve rankings or traffic on its own.

The official WordPress.org SEO-tag directory is useful for finding candidates and checking listing details. Its active-installation figures and compatibility labels are snapshots, not an independent feature audit or ranking-performance comparison.

Which plugins belong on your shortlist?

The directory’s visible candidates include Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO (AIOSEO), SEOPress, The SEO Framework, SureRank, and SiteSEO. These are options to investigate, not a verified ranking of the best plugins. The available official-source information does not support a complete, current comparison of ten products’ features, updates, compatibility, and prices.

Yoast SEO

Yoast’s WordPress.org listing reports version 28.6, released September 29, 2026, and compatibility with WordPress 6.9 or higher, tested through WordPress 7.1.3. It describes XML sitemaps that update as content changes and says content marked noindex is excluded from the sitemap; it also documents URL- and group-level noindex controls. The listing reports more than 10 million active installations, an adoption figure rather than evidence of better SEO results. Check the current plugin listing before installing, since version and compatibility details can change.

SEOPress

SEOPress’s official listing describes metadata controls, schema, XML sitemaps, redirections, migration from other plugins, and integrations. Its pricing page lists SEOPress PRO at $49 per year for one site and $149 per year for unlimited sites; taxes are excluded, and the final price depends on location. The same page lists SEOPress Insights at $99 per year per site. These are published examples, not a complete comparison of free and paid features across plugins; verify current checkout terms and feature limits before buying.

Other directory candidates

Rank Math, All in One SEO, The SEO Framework, SureRank, and SiteSEO are also listed in the official directory. The sources available here do not establish their current feature sets, plan prices, compatibility, or update status in enough detail for a fair product-by-product verdict. Open each candidate’s current listing and review its changelog and documentation rather than treating its presence in the directory as an endorsement.

How to choose for your site

  1. List the controls you need. Check whether you require metadata editing, XML sitemaps, index/noindex rules, schema, redirects, or migration tools. Avoid paying for features your workflow will not use.
  2. Check compatibility and maintenance. Compare the plugin’s current WordPress and PHP requirements with your site, then review its recent release history. Directory labels can change, so confirm them at the time you install.
  3. Test the editing workflow. Consider how the plugin fits your editor or page builder and whether the people maintaining the site can find and use its settings. A feature list does not show how well a workflow fits your team.
  4. Calculate total cost for your setup. Separate free features from paid ones, count the number of sites, and include only the modules you need. Check regional taxes and renewal or checkout terms on the vendor’s current pricing page.
  5. Keep expectations realistic. No plugin listing or vendor feature description establishes a ranking guarantee. Yoast’s own FAQ says, “Nobody can guarantee that an AI assistant will mention your site, however you can make sure it understands your content correctly.” That is vendor-authored guidance, not independent evidence of AI citations or search performance.

What the available evidence does not show

No independent comparative study establishing which of these plugins produces the greatest ranking gains was identified in the sources used for this overview. Installation counts, feature claims, and compatibility labels answer different questions; none is a substitute for comparative outcome data. Treat any claim that installing one plugin alone guarantees traffic, rankings, or AI citations with caution.
