There is no single best WordPress ChatGPT or AI plugin for every site. Choose by the job you need done: drafting and editing content, answering visitor questions, generating media, or letting an AI agent work with WordPress. For a hosted WordPress.com site, first check whether its built-in AI Assistant is available; for other workflows, compare plugins such as Jetpack AI, the official AI plugin, and AI Engine by provider setup, access, compatibility, and cost—not by feature count alone.

Start with the task, not the “AI plugin” label

The WordPress.org AI directory groups together products that do different things: provider connectors, site-building tools, SEO features, chatbots, and developer infrastructure. Its AI tag is a discovery aid, not a quality ranking. A plugin that helps draft a post is not automatically a good choice for a customer-support chatbot or an agent that can change site content. Browse the WordPress.org AI plugin directory, then narrow the list to the workflow you actually need.

  • Writing and editing: Generate a first draft, revise existing text, adjust tone, or create summaries and titles.
  • Visitor chat: Answer questions using approved site information. Check what content the chatbot can access and how its responses are controlled.
  • Media: Generate or edit images and other media, if the tool supports the formats and workflow you use.
  • SEO: Assist with search-related content tasks. An AI feature does not establish that a page will rank better.
  • Agent access: Connect an AI agent to WordPress so it can work with site content or other supported capabilities. This is different from asking an editor assistant to rewrite a paragraph.

Before trialling a tool, define one task and a success measure—for example, how much editing a product-description draft needs, or whether a visitor can find a correct answer from approved pages.

Compare the main WordPress AI approaches

These options are not interchangeable. The table describes the use cases and setup documented by the vendors and WordPress.org; it is not a comparative test of output quality, speed, or reliability.

Option Best fit Setup and availability What to verify
WordPress.com AI Assistant Editing and media workflows inside an eligible WordPress.com site WordPress.com described the Assistant as integrated with the site editor and Media Library. Its announcement said Business or Commerce plan sites could opt in at no extra cost at that time. Confirm current plan eligibility, opt-in status, and feature availability. It is a WordPress.com platform feature, not a universal feature of self-hosted WordPress.
Jetpack AI Editor-focused content and media assistance; the product page describes text, images, tables, lists, proofreading, tone changes, titles, and summaries Available through Jetpack. Its plugin changelog also records development of AI controls and agent-related capabilities. Check current plan terms and limits, which features are available to your site, and what any agent connection can access. Changelog entries indicate development, not universal availability.
Official WordPress AI plugin AI features and experiments, including content assistance, with a configurable provider connection The WordPress.org listing says setup requires an AI Connector configured with a provider API key, such as one from OpenAI, Google AI, or Anthropic. Learn WordPress explains installation and provider connection. Confirm the provider connector, model, API billing, and compatibility with your site. Do not assume provider usage is included with the plugin.
AI Engine A broader toolkit whose listing describes chatbots, content and media tools, provider connections, and MCP The WordPress.org listing instructs users to obtain a key from OpenAI or another preferred provider and configure it in plugin settings. Separate the free core plugin from paid features; verify current feature availability, provider charges, permissions, and compatibility.

Product features and plan terms change. Check the current WordPress.com AI Assistant announcement, Jetpack listing and changelog, official AI plugin listing, and AI Engine listing before making a decision.

Which option should you choose?

If you publish on WordPress.com

Check the built-in Assistant before adding another plugin. WordPress.com announced it on February 17, 2026, and updated the announcement on April 8, 2026; at that time, sites on Business or Commerce plans could opt in at no extra cost. Those dates describe the announcement, not a guarantee that the same plans or terms remain in effect. Check the current eligibility and feature details in the announcement.

If your main need is help writing in WordPress

Compare the editor workflow in Jetpack AI and the official AI plugin. Jetpack AI’s product description covers drafting and editing tasks, while the official plugin’s listing describes provider-connected AI features and experiments. If you already have a preferred provider, the official plugin’s connector setup may suit your workflow; include the provider’s API usage in your cost calculation. If you want a packaged editor tool, check Jetpack’s current plan, limits, and availability for the specific features you need.

If you need a chatbot

AI Engine’s listing explicitly describes chatbot features. Before enabling one, decide which pages or other materials it may use, who can administer it, and how you will handle inaccurate or unanswered questions. A feature listing alone does not show how well a chatbot performs on your content; test representative visitor questions before relying on it.

If you want an AI agent to work with WordPress

Look for documented agent or MCP support, then inspect the available tools and permissions. WordPress.com’s MCP support documentation says agents such as Claude or ChatGPT can connect to WordPress.com accounts; it also describes MCP access for self-hosted sites connected through Jetpack with a Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete plan. That is an agent-integration workflow, not ordinary text generation in the editor. Read the current WordPress.com MCP capabilities documentation and confirm exactly which actions are exposed before connecting an account.

Check setup, compatibility, access, and cost

Provider and billing

Find out whether the tool uses a built-in allowance or requires your own provider account and API key. The official AI plugin and AI Engine listings describe provider-key setup. Ask whether usage is included, billed separately by the provider, or subject to plugin limits. For Jetpack AI, review the live plan terms before subscribing: product allowances, prices, and renewal terms can change.

Compatibility and workflow

Confirm the current plugin listing supports your WordPress version, editor, theme, and relevant integrations. Check the specific workflow you use—such as the block editor, a page builder, WooCommerce, or a multisite setup—rather than assuming that a general compatibility claim covers every configuration. Test changes on a staging site when they could affect production content or commerce.

Data handling and permissions

Before sending prompts or site content to a provider, read its current documentation for data handling and retention. For chatbots and agents, identify the content and actions they can reach, which user roles can operate them, and whether a human must approve changes. Do not infer privacy or safety controls from an “AI” label or a broad feature list.

Total cost and ongoing maintenance

Include any plugin plan, provider API usage, hosting-plan eligibility, and required upgrade in the total. Also consider who will review generated content and maintain chatbot sources, prompts, or agent permissions. A low initial setup cost does not establish low ongoing cost.

Run a small trial before using AI on a live site

  1. Choose one representative task. Use a real but low-risk example, such as drafting a product description or answering a common support question from approved site material.
  2. Check setup and access. Configure the provider if required, confirm the account and user roles involved, and review what information or actions are exposed.
  3. Test on staging where appropriate. Avoid experimenting on live content or commerce workflows if a mistake could be published or affect customers.
  4. Review the output. Check factual accuracy, editing effort, accessibility, tone, and whether the result follows your site’s requirements.
  5. Record usage and cost. Compare actual provider charges or plan limits with the amount of useful work the tool completed.
  6. Keep, change, or remove the tool. Continue only if the result meets your success measure and its permissions, maintenance, and total cost are acceptable.

There is no independent, apples-to-apples evidence in the cited product materials establishing which option produces the most accurate content, improves rankings, or saves the most time. Treat those as outcomes to test on your own workflow, not promises implied by a feature list.
